I can't say for certain, but what I can say for certain is that being on a character select screen doesn't show you as online on the global friends list. I'd have to assume it's the same for character account. It's possible they just count the number of accounts logged in, but we already have one system to detect whether a player is online or not via the global friends list, and it's easier just to use that same system for online players than it is to make new code.

Well, the CoC uses the term "logged in". So, just having the account logged in, even though you haven't selected a character to play yet, whether it's a new one you're making or an established one, this counts as you being logged in. At least, without being an attorney, that's what the words mean to me.

For purposes of the Code of Conduct that Ukase mentions, we mean a character actually logged into the game.

 

But I wasn't sure if Server Status counted you if you were just looking at your characters on a given server.  For counting on this list:

 

 

So I "logged in" to my account, selected different servers, then checked to see if there was any change.  And I also fully logged in characters to different servers.  The problem was that I couldn't tell if it was me or someone else logging in and out.  And I also discovered there's a bit of a delay between actually entering a server and being counted on the list.  So while I thought I was being clever, I wasn't able to be sure . . . UNTIL . . . I logged in and out of Breakout a few times.  One other player actually joined in while I was testing so that threw me off for a bit.   But I now feel confident in saying that being on the character select screen DOES count as being logged in for purposes of the Server Status Counter.

 

But it's still a full log in on a character on a server with three red dots (1,100+) to violate the CoC.
