These are my controllers (ranked best from top to bottom) - Plant/Traps. Can Solo AVs and GMs - Ill/Storm. Can Solo AVs and GMs - Earth/Nature. Can Solo AVs ans some GMs - Mind/TA. Perfect for TFs Sfs and anykind of end content - Ice/Poison Excellent for teaming and end content - Grav/Dark Great for any team content - Elec/Elec Aff team booster and tanks best friend - Dark/Time mass debuffer and team buffer All of them are fun to play. Some of them like Plant or Ill are set for high challenging content.

@MonteCarlaexcellent guide and summary for Dominators. As you i follow up the same path mostly: after Lvl 22 ensure my stamina and health with hasten and then chase all + rech set bonusses i can. When i plan my dominators i tend to aim for +170% recharge w/hasten and also 44% ranged defense bonuss. Lately i`d been respecting some of my doms into Primal Forces Epic. My Elec/Elec and my Ice/Energy are both running Primal dure ET and Conserve Stamina plus the +Res shield. However my Plant/MA, Dark/Rad, Mind/Dark, Stone/Fire and Symphony/Sonic dominators are all into Soul Mastery due some great power choices as Dark Consumption (+end) Dark Embrace (res shield), Soul Drain (+to hit +dmg) and Summon a Seer (pet) By now i can tell all my doms have a great survivality at +54 end content and also enough +rech to get perma ongoinig easy. Some of them require permanent endurance monitoring and also good timing handling conserve power, using Dark Consumption or Ageless. I completely support your path guide in this post and in general terms id the way to go if you can afford it.

Plant/Storm is a nice combo. As someone mentioned above Storm summoning has many powers you can skip (Gale, Snowstrom, Hurricane, Thunderclap) in favor of piciking pool or epic powers. With this said there is a few things you may want to consider: 1) Softcap Ranged Defense (+40%) at least and also get a decent resistance shield stacking with Tough from fighting pool 2) On my experience unless there is a thematic reason, i always go with a Patron Power Pool. My reason is to pick a 2nd Pet that helps me with more damage, the resistance shield and also endurance drain or a build up power. The most interesting Patron Power for me is Soul Mastery. Dark Consumption (+end), Dark Embrace (resist negative shield), Sould Drain (+dam +to hit) and Summon a Seer (Pet) are excellent options for increase your dps and performance 3) Get all the +recharge bonusses you can get without sacrificing your defense/resist minimums 4) Endurance will be an issue with Storm Summoning so Patron Power as Soul Mastery or Mu mastery or Primal Forces from Epic Pool is almost a must so you can pick something useful in your Incarnates other than Ageless You shouldnt have any issues soloing any kind of content with this combo. Plant is one of the best primaries and Storm is one of the best debuff secondary. Im having fun with all my controllers building them as i described above. Some of them as my Ill/Storm or Plant/Traps can solo GMs.

You got the mechanic idea correct. Your first attack/hold/stun will be always from range. So once you locked most of every NPC, can move safely to melee range and finish the job. Also you can consider a different mechanic which is softcapp S/L deffense. Ice Mastery and Black Scorpion provide a S/L shield for this. Indeed thats the best way. However i checked your build and got some feedback for you. At first sight you defense numbers looks great but those total numbers lie. Why? because Stealth. Stealth is tricky because you are in "hidden" mode yes... you will have 8.5% + def but once you step out from stealth al that % defense is gone. So, if you have your pet out you lose stealth inmediatly and with that your global defense went from 40% ish to 30% You are almost with Perma Link Minds but lets say you cant keep it up or missed to push button and your defense went from 30% to 25% Your attacks slotted with slow sets instead of damage sets... not DPS effective. You pick some useless powers as Indomitable Will just for muling a LoTg same as Inflitration Hasten just need 2 rech reduction that you can upgrade +5 when 50 Strangler your main ST hold tool is underslotted. You want that tool slotted properly. It will let you lock AV´s EB´s Bosses with just one click and domination ongoing Carrion Creepers is advisable to frank-slot if you can. It pays off big time. No travel power... well thats a constraint. Also as an alternative i put together a build that you can test if you want. This build is focused on softcapp ranged defense with Perma Link running. If you pick Agility core you could have +2 defense extra for high end content. This build has 130% enhanced damage while yours just got 15%. Psi Mastery is for me the first choice always. Link Minds provides de defense necessary for going Incarnate content. Considering that end game has a ton of psi damage the shield from Psi Mastery is great to have as well. I dont like sets as Ice or BS because are more tricky to compensate due lack of resist shield. However Ice got some interesting tools as the guys described above.

Yes thats it. Ok now a few observations about your build: - Acrobatics is not required. Perma Domination will provide knockback/mezz protection - You obviously focused your build towards + recharge bonusses which is fine, but you dont have anykind of defense/resist bonusses that will let you survive through the game. You can reach a great recharge bonuss and also softcap your ranged or S/L defense - Why picking flares instead incinerate? And why just 1 slot in this attack? Is useless on the way it is - Combat Jumping way overslotted same as Tough. All those uniques will not save you to taking hits and remember Doms are one of the lowest HP ATs in game. So you dont want to take hits, you want to avoid them meaning softcap defense -Health is ok with 2 Slots only: Panacea + Miracle uniques. If you can fit a Numina unique great. -Hasten is overslotted. Just 2 slots and upgrade +5 recharge reduction when hit 50 -You chose Smoke over Cinders that is not advisable. You want a AoE hold always. Thats a core tool for your control and survavility Ok with all this said and going back to the reason of your post as @tidgesaid above your main source of stamina is perma dom and also using Consume wisely. /Fire is endurance heavy and if you also pick Hot Feet aura you will be begging for end all the time. So use Consume when required and if it is difficult to handle remember you have Ageless incarnate power when you hit 50+. For last im sharing my take on your build and how i would run it. This build has +180 rech and also +51% ranged defense with perma-Link minds running. If you chose Agility Core incarnate your defense goes up to 53.5 which is a good number to run +54 high end content or GM/AVs hunting. Im sure some other players take Ice Mastery for sleet and ice storm for more DPS and debuffs. You can try that path too. I would suggest Earth or Illusion /Nature Controller and Fire/Rad Blaster. /Nature is one of the most complete buffs/heals/debuffs secondaries in the game and will complement a lot supporting a Blaster with heals and Res buffs. Also having a tankie pet as Poop man or PA will let the Blaster go blapping without any potential risk. You have fun!

Hello!! Good to know you find a good combo for enjoying doms. As you said i noted checking your build that you achieved interesting defense numbers but not permadom which is highly advisable. So i pick your combo and put together something similar in terms of defense but using Ice Mastery. This build has Ranged and S/L defense softcapped with Agility Incarnate and/or using Power Up when available. Also this build is in permadom. I didnt take any of the PbAoE auras because they are too end heavy in my opinion and dont see great benefits in return dps wise. I must agree with @Mythical Creature. There is not "one way" to play a defender or a "correct" way to make a build. People can find their own style through different builds which is the beauty of this game. I´ve seen so many people on these forums thinking they own the truth about how a character must be played or built... and that video that Mythical posted show you how wrong you are about to try to set a "meta" or a "must" on this game. I personally dont like Mythical build but no because is missing or picking powers that i would pick, i dont like it because my Poison Defender it must go besides the tank right on his side. Thats my playstyle, going melee range and set up my trap and do the rest of my work debuffing. Going back to the original question on this post: What makes a good defender build? To understand the reach and limits of you can do with the power choices you have in hand. Also understanding the role you have in a team and lay down a build that can help you to fit that role. Finally understand this concept: Buffs and Debuffs are king in this game.

Hi! I do have a Dark/Rad (my main) and to be honest Dark/ it goes good with any secondary. Got better sinergy with /Dark due -to hit inherent but Dark/ is the best primary with Plant for a dominator in my opinion. About /Psy just to having the -regen inherent it makes it desirable for any GMs AVs fights. Some animations are kind of slow in this powerset but i think you will have a blast on end game. Regarding your epic my advice is: go Psionic mastery. Why? Perma Link Minds will give you the +defense push you need for softcaping against incarnate content. Some of my dominators reach %56 ranged defense with LM and Agility, more than enough to go toe by toe against GMs or AVs. Ice Mastery is a excellent choice as well if you want to play more agressive but will not help with your resistance and the shield is S/L defense.

I got a Symphony/Sonic Dominator sitting at 50 atm. To be honest i didnt like Symphony mostly because the Pet, found it weak and irrelevant at the very ending game. So after thinking over and over i decided to re-make a build were i can reinforce the pet issue. This build has a Mu Pet with power sink from patron. Both power sets are end heavy and PS helps a lot to close that gap too. Also this build is softacpped with ranged defense and 182% global recharge bonuss. Is not cheap at all but i believe this is the way to play efficient 2 power sets that got some major holes for a dominator. Hello everyone! I have a question for whom played this combo. Does /Fire requires softcap defenses for better survavility at end content? I remember /Fire has a OP healing with HF coming back fast all the time. So my question comes down to this: is better to have a build aiming for softcap resist + ranged defense or a build aiming for softcap resist and all +recharge you can get? In my experience with Scrappers they shine soloing end content when you reach softcap resist + defense. So i was wondering if this DP/Fire combo would work the same. I´ll post two alternative builds later to get some advices. Thanks!

I pick Soul patron just for the resist shield.. you can pick any other if you want just make sure to keep it slotted as i got it. This build is team oriented but can solo without issues. I currently have a Staff/Rad scrapper lvl 50+3. As @Uun said above Staff lacks of ST but it has great AoE. One thing that hurts the set is the lack of Build Up. If you got debuffed with -to hit that will affect deeply your dps. Piece of advice: get Tactics with Gaussian Proc. Is a life saver. Also ATO + crit will give you some AoE burst which is nice. My Scrapper went through EBs fairly well while leveling. It took more time to beat them but got it done. Staff is a late bloomer so i would say give it some time until you can get ATOs at 50.

A max build will require to change sets. Just to clarify, a max build for me is a build that let you solo +4 x 8, stand toe by toe in any incarnate trial/tf or against any GMs. So balance between +def and dps is a must. Also some resistance will be required for any attacks that bypass your softcap. I pick Psionic Mastery over Ice Mastery because it grants me better survavility with Link Minds for incarnate content. Hello! Just checked your build and there is room for improvements. As you said you want to keep it cheap and thats what i worked for as well. I didnt take any powers you didnt pick just to conserve your preferences. Personally i would take Psy Mastery or Ice Mastery, but thats up to you. My take on your build has 1- +16 rech than yours 2- 44.5% ranged def so is softcapped 3 - Dropped Overwhelming force which is expensive in favor to place a Controller ATO so you may be close to your same budget 4- Moved slots from hasten (just need 2 no need for 3 there) and 3rd slots from Weave, Maneuvers, hover that only provided 0.3-0.5 + def in favor to add more slots in powers that can give you 3.25 def As an advice Doms required a lot of inf investment but really worth it at end game. So maybe you change your mind later and go for a max ideal build. Here you go. Besides Rad you got /Dark got a good heal /Savage as well. Probably i would pick /Dark for the -to hit inherent that helps a lot. Think about it

Crticism with reason is: Illusion set lacks of control because there is not enough tools in the powerset. Criticism without a reason is: Dominators sucks because they cant do what Blasters do and also cant perform as Controllers. If we are having a serious discussion about this dont start with the "Dominators sucks" deal, because there is a large threads with videos proofing the opposite. So if you are standing in a Dominator without IOs and lacking of build plan for short/long term to the road to 50 of course you will have a negative crticism about the AT more if you solo through content. All you need is a plan and goals for your build if you want to maximize your character. If you dont have the inf always can team up and have a smooth journey to max level. When i leveled my Ill/Ice i got a plan to buy IOs every 7-10 levels. By Lvl 40 was in perma-dom sricking to my planned build. I had hardtimes trying to solo EBs and also trying to run +3 missons. I got some visits to hospital as well but nothing that makes me think that Illusion is broken or at the bottom of other powersets. Is a trade: you got more DPS than Control. The set requires you to approach different than Dark, Plant etc. Illusion calls for agressive playing., this set is just different than the rest. Bottom line is you can like or dislike the set but i find it useful when more DPS and soft control is required for some content.

Well it looks you dont have good experience building and playing Dominators. Im sure you can use your mouse and keyboard and search through the Dominators forum for all the great things players achieved with this AT. So your statement of "Dominators sucks" is just a personal appreciation from someone that doesnt understand whats the reach, limits and the role of a Dominator. Any AT in game will underperform if is not fully geared or doesnt use IO set bonusses, it has been like that since Issue 7. Welcome to CoX! Tankers suck too because they pull aggro more than the team can handle. And defenders sucks too beacuse they dont heal me often as i need it. Oh Controllers suck too because Fluffy goes crazy on the lose pulling more mobs over and over... and so on and on. Is all about the player behind the keyboard, not the archetype. Some people play better rolling a Blaster than a Tanker is just like that. Sorry you cant handle people doing "wrong" stuff in a game, but thats the way an MMOs are. If i was you ill invest those 5 lost minutes due a Noob Dominator explaining to your team players how to play their characters and when and how to drop their powers as you like, otherwise kick them out. No one wants to lose 5 minutes... in 5 minutes dinosaurs got extinct, Marty Mc Fly went back to 1955 and Will Smith lost his career slaping Chris Rock in the Oscars. I will put my poor forum career and reputation in jeopardy here: Can Controllers hold, stun, lock, fear etc.. better than a Dominator? Dominators cant tank, cant be top DPS, cant heal your team and cant buff/debuff as defenders. We got that down. So are we going to start to compare Dominators against different classes to get to your conclusion? In my next Dominator i need to aim to Resist cap instead recharge bonusses then try to Tank a 4 star ITF and get to your same point of view? An here is the proof: Dominators are not blasters and are not Controllers. As i said above: you never understood this archetype. Sorry you hate Dominators so bad (i feel you... MM in caves make me feel the same) but people like me enjoy the AT since CoV release. I could spent lines and lines writing all the great things i did with my Doms through the years, but to be honest i dont want you to lose other 5 minutes in hand of other silly Dominator again.

Yes and no. As you manifested in your post Illusion for doms in not the set that controllers have at all. The set lacks of AoE control disregarding if you have perma PA or not. Any AV/EB will turn into you and target you with all your pets out. The recharge time of the tools for AoE control are too long. Not having a AoE inmob or fear as other sets really put Illusion behind other sets. I would rather fix the set deleting Spectral Terror and replacing it for a AoE inmob or fear power or just giving this pet those cones. At lvl 50 incarnate gets better. You get access to Ageless so your end problems are gone. My Ill/Ice got +193 rech global bonus Ageless/Agility and still have problems controlling 4x8 mobs. The positive side for Illusion is the DPS output. The damage coming from PA and Phantom + any high dps secondary is nice. Agree 100% with this. Dark/Plant are overall more complete sets than Illusion.

"Buffs/Debuffs" are king in this game. With that said i find corruptors to be more "complete" archetypes and provide that extra edge in teams to defeat any hard content. In classic CoH if you didnt have any buffs/debuffs in your team you were doomed to fail disregarding how much dps you bring. I enjoy more playing my corruptors than my blasters. Some corruptor power sets are just too OP with IO`s bonusses + Incarnate.
