  1. Generally speaking the opinion on the Sentinel during the Sekrit was: UNDERDAMAGED As far as I know the only reason that nothing ever happened was twofold. First the Powers Developer ran out of real-time to work on the game. Second, when the Powers Developer GOT time to work on the game, a bitter/vitriolic clique was quite successful at de-motivations. Flash forward to today when there's a tad bit more Dev Power, and the Dev Team is a little better at telling overly bitter players to stick it where the sun don't shine, and I'd still say that at the core.. the Sentinels are undamaged. The operating theory on Sekrit was "Scrapper Damage" and they never got close. I'd compare the output to Defenders, but I think that'd be insulting to Defenders. That being said, simply flat boosting the damage doesn't really do anything to develop the Archetype as it's own unique entry. It fixes the immediate problem, but just makes the AT a Ranged Scrapper (which, well, is what the AT was advertised as) If you'll pardon a tangent for a moment into Tank's, I think there may be a historical link here that might help. During development under Sekrit the Powers Developer added new Tertiary Powers for Tankers. A number of these new sets brought along Interface type powers, adding debuffs to Tanker attacks. During the testing of these new sets I strongly argued (multiple times) that the entire Tanker Tertiary order should be re-adjusted. I argued that the existing Debuffs (e.g. [Darkest Night]) and new debuffs should be moved to the Tertiary T1 slot, all Single target damages to Tertiary T2, all TAOE's to Tertiary T3, All holds/immobilizes/self-buffs to Tertiary T4, leaving Tertiary T5 for Pets / secondary holds / secondary immobilizes. The intent to these changes was to make the Debuffs available at level 30 under scaling conditions, vastly increasing the value of a Tank as a back-up debuffing option in the game's mid-range. This would also fix outliers like Earth Mastery, Arctic Mastery, and Energy Mastery. So, bringing this back around to Sentinels: Perhaps the focus should be on the mid-game engagement. What, exactly, kind of crossover do the Tertiary Sets offer that Blasters/Scrappers don't offer? Well, the obvious answer would be Team Buffs / Heals / Controls. Most of the Sentinel Sets have a either a single target or mass immobilize in the Tertiary T1, and a Heal/Debuff/Pet in the Tertiary T5. So, re-order. For the most part put the Heal/Buff/Pet in the Tertiary T3 slot to make them available earlier, standardize the Single Target Melee in the Tertiary T4, and the Tertiary PbAOE in the T5 slot. So, what about that T2 slot? Keep the miscellaneous holds/ranged-attacks? Going back to the Tanks, where Tankers would get their Interface-like debuffs by level 35 in Tertiary T1, Sentinels would get those same kind of Interface-like powers in their T2 slots. Thus giving Sentinels a little bit more flexibility to offer per-attack debuffs as early as 30 as well. I think this approach would help separate the Sentinels as combinations that play differently before even looking at an AT Specific mechanic. Now, the AT mechanic itself was pretty much broken from the start. Most Sentinel builds don't even bother taking the Primary T2 since the Defense Opportunity is at best useless and at worst pointless. The Offensive Opportunity doesn't actually do anything to increase delivered damage. In-Set advantages such as Beam Rifle's integrated Regeneration Debuff have a larger payoff than the mechanic. Now, while I've been quite certain about how to address Sentinels as far as Power Sets go, I've never been too sure on the Mechanic. I'll just run you through the first idea that percolated in my noggin, and then why it wouldn't actually work. Going back to the Tanker Tertiary Powers that never happened, most of those were implemented as Toggles. For Sentinels, maybe it should be approached as a Click Activation. When a Sentinels Opportunity Bar is full when they click their Interface-like power; it both doubles in strength and pulses to nearby teammates. A twist on the Dominator formula if you will, instead of only empowering the player, empowering the player and any nearby allies. Again; this would give the Sentinel additional value in mid-range play, and lower barriers for players who don't possess optimized/be-all-end-all/end-game builds. Now, granted, the major flaw with this approach is that it, obviously, requires the player to take a Tertiary Power. It's not something inherent to the character from Level 1. So the quick response there was to just borrow from Dominators and Dual Pistols Swap Ammo; and let the character get an Interface-Like per-power proc toggle at level 1, and let Sentinels swap between each on demand. Thus the Tertiary Pools would only have to be readjusted for standardized order with no powers changed. That being said, that sounds almost overpowered to give any AT that kind of flexibility in choosing power enhancements from level 1. So I really don't know what to do with the AT for a unique/specific mechanic. I'm just quite confident that what it does now... isn't it.

  3. The last one was a quick look at a Psionic Mastery take for [Link Minds], but that I think is the most lackluster take. While I was able to keep the Survivability intact, mostly, I only got there by dropping [Maneuvers] for [Hasten]... and even with Ageless Destiny in play I'm 99% certain it will be ~10sec or so off perma.   6. Another number of frontport/backports. While I had a Dark Tank on live... it was a Dark/EM. Which, well, the less I say about either set the happier I'll be. I was, however, quite happy with where I got the combination as of a build optimized for an Energy Melee Revamp (that never actually happened). Embarrassing Edit Portion: I really wanted the X-Ray eyes for theme... and only after getting stuck into ranting about the broken Sentinel Inherent Mechanic... did I realize that X-Ray eyes is the Defensive Opportunity Selection. Were I to actually make this in-game under that current mechanic I'd swap to [Neutrino Bolt]. So this started as seeing how well the Tanker build which reached S/L/F/C/M/A defensive soft-caps could fit into a Sentinel, and to make the backport easier I went for Rad Blast since it has a number of PbAOE's, unusual for a Sentinel set. The first run wasn't that successful: even with Agility S/L weren't soft-capped, F/C was way over-capped, and while I had Melee nailed... felt like I was close enough to actually hit S/L.   9. Next up was a Psi Melee/Invuln. Okay, fine, I get it. A lot of players hate Psi Melee. It too often is an All Or Nothing! set. I didn't quite get that on my first avatar with it since I went Bio Armor... and well... Bio Armor can even make Staff Melee look good. Still, I stuffed in [Boggle], mitigated [Mass Levitate], and pumped [Concentration] with a 6-slot Guassian without drastically lowering the survivability.   10. With a little bit of time to do nothing, I started playing around with backporting the recent Claws/Invuln-R2 build into other Scrapper Attack sets. So, disclaimer: I'm not saying any of these builds are optimized for Critical Damage Delivery, or optimized for attack chains. First up is a Dark/Invuln/Fire scrapper. I dropped [Resist Elements] because it was not adding to the Defense Debuff Protection, and I'd still be pushing ~59% F/C resists with the Scaling Proc. In it's place went [Hasten] to drive a higher recharge on [Soul Drain]. It's not quite perma at ~33sec/30sec, but you still keep the rest of everything else. While I tend to prefer placing Critical Strikes on Cone/TAOE's since those seem to be more reliable in mob-combat, Dark Melee's cone is [Shadow Maul]. From previous scrapper builds I really hate when the Crit Chance goes off while in the middle of a long-animation / low-damage-per-hit-DOT.   13. Back on live server I only made a claws character once, hated the animations, deleted the character, and never looked back. For various reasons I also never made an Invuln on the live server. My first invuln was a SS/Invuln to see how bad the full Rage Crash was. (data driven conclusion: "Unplayable under any circumstances") My second invuln was a DP/Invuln sent, mostly for a comparative of how much additional survivability the Sentinel Specific changes wrought. So when I got asked to do a Claws/Invuln, I shuddered, pushed it aside, tip-toed around the subject, but with a few days off, finally shrugged and decided to get it out of the way. To make the backport from the Sentinel version, having been my last look at invuln, as clean as possible, I picked the Fire tertiary to make sure I had a non-knockback containing Single target and TAOE to work with. Edit: Doh. Forgot to finish the story because I went looking for the original Archive link. Anyways, I ran into an issue with Mids Hero Reborn Beta where I wasn't able to swap Tertiary's around. So I went to save the build to restart. You might be able to imagine my shock then when upon saving the build, I received a message asking for "Scrapper - Claws - Invulnerability - R1" to be overwritten. Apparently, at some point, I had done a Claws/Invuln/Body for somebody. I have no idea when. Edit: Anyways, due to restarting the build in MHR-B, I swapped to the Weapon Mastery to try and avoid encountering the earlier bug problem. The build I posted is already cranking ~158.8% recharge *BASE* It's already into Perma[Hasten] by ~3.7s (116.3/120s) Adding more recharge nets you absolutely nothing. There are no other long-recharge powers that benefit from closing a recharge gap. So basically, you'd be giving up additional situational survivability (In this case extra KnockBack protection which is useful for WHEN you get Grounded or if you took a different Travel power such as [Super Speed]) to get absolutely nothing.

  16. Then the last build was a shift to Grav/Therm/Stone. Not really for a thematic reason. This was done mostly because I had done an ill/storm/stone that I really liked how it played. This, I think, has the highest potential survivability of the builds, topping out at an Ageless Incarnate Enabled perma 1605 hit points, just one below the cap. So it can take a few more hits than the Ice Version. That being said, since it only really offers strong Ranged Protections, getting in close to drop [Seismic Smash] may just be a debt invitation.   24. Um. No. I just have to step in here and shut this nonsense down. THIS IS FALSE Anyone who tells you this story is Flat Out Lying. Guardians and Sentinels were created and implemented on the hidden server by two very different developers. Yes, Sentinels are boring. Yes, Sentinels are under-damaged, victim of the same kid-gloving that wrecked balance on elemental power-sets on the live server. But Sentinels were built in the process of learning HOW the game worked, what it took to mix and match existing power-sets, as well as what it took to create new primaries, new secondaries, new tertiaries, and new inherent powers. They were the "Safe" mode that gave a basis for known quantities within the game to be handled first. Those known quantities are critical to understanding some of the background events in play. Patches that made it onto hidden server had to be well-documented, with no temporary hacks, no black-boxes, and no obfuscation. This wasn't just because the Hidden Server developers lacked the tools and utilities the live server developers had, but also because any developer who came online further down had to be able to jump in and be capable of understanding the work that the Hidden Server devs had accomplished. The numerous oddities and anomalies in coding caused by Contractual Devs stuffing features into the game to make deadlines on live cause enough problems as is. If a developer contributed something to the Hidden Server but did not write it cleanly or document that addition, future developers would have complications keeping that contributed code working. That aspect of code quality was critical to keeping the development going. So we get to Guardians. Guardians were a pet project of a person who had never developed anything before. In and of itself, not a bad thing. The original developer deserves massive amount of credit for taking a flying leap into an ambitious project... and failing. Thing is, Guardians weren't complete. Guardians didn't work. Patches submitted upstream to the Hidden Server devs routinely broke the entire build... and that's a *BAD* thing. That's why Guardians never happened. The original Guardian Dev wasn't interested in cleaning up his code, making sure it didn't break the upstream builds, and making sure the code was in a state where it could be supported in the future. In some ways I really feel sorry for that developer because he at least tried to do something special. And... in some ways I don't. I have enough background information to be able to look current players in the eyes and say... "He did it to himself" And for any server attempting to integrate Guardians? I think they are going to run straight into the same code-quality issues that happened on the first go-around... and I really wouoldn't get my hopes up on seeing Guardians come to any other servers just because I don't see the Homecoming, Resurgence, or Victory devs wanting to waste time with a developer who responds to criticism by throwing their hands up and storming away.
