Very few people were using them and Joystick probably needs a serious look to revamp it for modern game controllers (that's a whole other can of worms).

I have been using game controllers to play City of Heroes since I started playing just before the drop of episode 2.

I have always used Logitech controllers and used their profiler to set the controller to act like a keyboard.

Here is my thread about my use of the Logitech F310 and how I set up that controller.

The setup works very well for me and it might be helpful to look at my setup when setting up defaults for controllers.

Also, if you are setting up for controllers/joysticks I would make sure to make one setup for the XBox controller and one for PlayStation controllers. I don't use either, but those seem to be one one most likely to be "ported" over for use. I don't believe either of these have a default profiler system that allows them to be set to operate like a keyboard.

I included in my post is my setup file for the Logitech F310.

Most of the time. I'm digging through to find the costume parts that work best of the character conception.

Am I trying to make character concepts based on using parts that I haven't used before? Rarely.

    23 hours ago, DougGraves said:

Bonus question - do you use the random costume generator and how do you use it?

    Rarely.

Sometime I make a character because I want to use a powerset, and I didn't really pre-plan a character concept.

And I mean rarely. I think I have only done this once.

I randomized until I found something cool - not so many times as I remember - and then used that as the base and changed costume parts.

I can't remember, but I think that time I even make the character name after I made the costume and/or changed the character name to more meet the character's costume.

Right now you got to log in again and again then check each character

well, I have 2 problems with this.

    1) If it is going to show something I need on the character screen that isn't there, it would be more important to me to know if the character needs to level-up or not.

    2) I think it would cause massive delay and a strain on the system to have to draw additional information out of the character database and display it on the character selection screen.

If I really need to know how much a character has, I can track it on a spreadsheet.

I have general cap of x influence on a character, any more than that goes into email in 500M infl emails to myself. If a character doesn't have enough extra to load a 500M infl onto an email, then I just email what they have extras - next character, pull that less than 500M infl out and then rollback what extra that character has into an email and repeat until 500M infl.

Then I draw from one of those emails when ever I need loot which is mostly on a new character or if I'm going to buy a bunch of card packs.

    Origin contacts!

When they started funneling during the last years before the Sunset, they stopped directing new players to the Origin contacts in City Hall in Atlas. A lot of the Origin stuff is left out of the contact selection if you don't follow it and get the next Origin contact. An origin contact will give you two Origin contact choices part way through their arc that are not the same origin. At the last level or the level after their last contact level (for missions) they will/can offer you another origin contact of the same origin. If you use the wiki to check out contacts, it will list what origin they are if they have one.

You can solo a lot of the Hollows, but it more fun with a team.

Perez Park is great for street fighting with a team.

And I second running the Striga arcs.

Before we can do that, I think it's important to recognize what sleep is, so that we can identify its strengths and weaknesses more clearly. Sleep is a Fragile Hold, that both completely shuts down an enemy but also breaks immediately on any form of damage. Because it is fragile, sleep tends to have a longer inherent duration than other control types. Sleep also sometimes has a higher base magnitude than other control types, and sleep magnitudes stack. The only thing I’m not personally clear on is whether or not sleep stacks linger for the full duration even if the target wakes up early, or if they’re lost entirely if the target gets woken up. Experience tells me that the latter is probably true, but I could be wrong so I don’t want to make any assertions.

I'm pretty sure it works like fear.

Hitting someone under the effect of the power allows them to make one retaliatory attack before coming under its influence.

It is important to note that Sleep is an auto hit on most non-PVP targets at this point.

The real power of sleeps - of course - is to get on a team where they know you are sleeping and understand not to attack the targets that are sleeping - aka use single target attacks on non-sleeping opponents first.

Sleep the minions while the team focuses on the Bosses and LT's but, of course, today there are so many people that only know how to play "Hulk smash!" and don't want to play any other way.

I appreciate the explanation, but I feel like it misses my point that this would be information that would be great to have in more permanent form directly from the GMs/Devs either directly within the Code of Conduct or in an explainer/FAQ thread on the subject of character homage pinned in a visible spot on the forums, rather than nested in several 2+ year old threads and then repeated second- or third-hand by users with no association to the GMs.

Then check out this post that is from the Lead Game Master in the same thread.

"Well, the GMs monitor this stuff, so the Devs are free to make content for everyone to play 😃
As for the rest of your comment? I'd hate to say it, but, it essentially comes down to "I know it when I see it". We don't have strict, precise guidelines, only because people would toe the line on purpose just to be annoying. And the GM staff needs to be free make judgement calls on these things. We've seen enough uninspired copycats and delightful homages to tell the difference by this point." - GM Impervium

There's been a few informal clarifications from GMs in various forum posts and messages in the discord server over the years on where they draw the line on "copies" of in-game characters and their reasoning for it, but it's still something that feels like it's gonna put you at the risk of falling afoul of a GM who draws that line differently to another.

They have stated in the past that they can't draw the line because some people will try to abuse it.

"No my toe isn't over the line. It's only on the line!"

Just don't blatantly copy or use the name of a character.

If you "need" to copy to make a character you like, then start from there, twist it once, and then tweak it twice so it isn't the same thing.

    I was a new player.

So, yes, I understand what it is like to play City of Heroes for the first time.

Sure. I was in early enough so that a lot of things were added to the game.

In the starting part of the game, there isn't needs for knowing about the market, building supergroup bases, or incarnate stuff if you play the game.

If you decide to bypass everything and jump in the deep end from the get go, then that's on you.

I remember playing WoW (or some other fantasy MMO, I think it was WoW) for the first time. There were all these mobs fairly tightly packed, all out in the open, far enough away from each other that they didn't agro each other, and I was like, okay... I'm going to go explore. I took off in one direction and ended up going not that far to find my way down the cliff and directly in the awaiting level 30 enemy mob below.

That doesn't happen in City of Heroes. You're going to have to go to another zone to get in over  your head that deep and you're going to have a chance to look around and see what level the enemies are before you attack or get attacked. Unless you are just steamrolling around not not paying attention to anything.

On my level 27, which I have just been throwing into MSRs to level, I have 13 total enhancements slotted outside of the 5 free ones you get from S.T.A.R.T.

It costs me 404,927 to upgrade a mix of 13 DOs and SOs to level 30. I have 22 slots sitting open without anything because it's a money sink to upgrade those and I'm just going to start dumping IOs in soon, but that's because I *know better* from having maxed out a character.

I can see you are having a difficult time playing the game.

I'm pretty sure that the upgrade system costs more than buying new ones.

btw. I don't slot IOs (not IO sets, just IOs) until the character can lot 45s.

One easy trick is to run DFBs. The DFB drops SO's that match your level regardless of what level you run it at.

New players will not. New players will hit this brick wall head first and nine times out of ten, they'll just quit to go play something more rewarding.

    And that's fine.

No one is forcing them to play a game that they don't enjoy playing.

They probably never put any money into supporting the game.

If they don't think a game that is really free and not P2P or P2W is worth taking time to figure out then that's on them.

What I do know is there is a good sized community that loves City of Heroes that are willing to support it the way that it is.

It doesn't need to change to "keep up" with newer games.

    Really?

Don't you know that many of us that played City of Heroes when it first came out were adults back then?

It wasn't on a home video game system.

You had to own a decent computer, pay for a monthly subscription in order to play, and - maybe most importantly - be able to pay for a decent enough internet connection order to be able to play. Home computers still weren't all over the place back then and neither were internet connections.

There is no reason to withhold QoL changes just because it's always been difficult. Things that worked 20 years ago don't work now (and arguably didn't work then, else NCSoft wouldn't have transitioned the game to a freemium model and then shut it down), and we need to stop living in a vat of 'back in my day' and realize the game's industry has changed and so has its audience.

All games were changing to freemium models back then in order to milk players for money through microtransactions - which all new games have and CoH through Homecoming no longer does.

We don't need to change. The game doesn't need to change.

The complexity is there to make the game worth exploring if the player wants to take the time to explore it.

They can explore it through all the different game mechanics, and they can explore it through a wide variety of archetypes and power sets (and the variations upon those).

No. The game isn't for anyone. No game is.

But the people that love the game are going to keep playing it .. and, yeah, most likely until they can't play it any more for one reason or another including death.

That's reality, but, if you change the game so that it is no long City of Heroes, then what is the point?

Most of the newer ones these days go by the unique Global name model (often with a discriminator number to avoid overlap, i.e. Lockely#1234) and character names are no longer unique.

Seems to be a way to get around the issue.

I have a feeling that it can't be implemented in CoH due to how the coding is setup.

That being said, the global name is unique. At this point, players aren't picky about their global name. I think would likely remain the case since the global names isn't "forward facing" in-game.

Personally, I would still find it hampering my enjoyment to be on a team filled with characters that all have the same name.

    5 hours ago, Lockely said:

We're halfway there with Globals already, but I don't know how robust the system would be to fallback on Globals for chat channels instead of unique character names.

You can create global channels which use your global.

For years before the sunset, the Repeat Offenders used global chat channels to organize the multi-server supergroups - that is to say the Repeat Offenders had multiple supergroups on different servers and when it was time to gather up to run that Supergroup there would be an announcement on the channel. Players also used it to recruit during times when there was no active sanctioned supergroup content running. So it was basically a network of players in the game that could move from server-to-server to pull characters to help with/join practically any content that a player wanted to recruit for.

    5 hours ago, Lockely said:

But I think I'd make that compromise over having hundreds of names sitting on accounts un-used for literal years.

Honestly, I have no issue with crafting a name, but I understand that there are those that find it very difficult to do so.

  19. 3 minutes ago, Lockely said:

This locks out anyone who doesn't learn how to game the market out of buying them. As the game doesn't explain the converter based economy to anyone, this means this knowledge is located outside of the game, and thus new players are being left out.

This game doesn't explain a lot of things.

This gives the player much more to explore and figure out versus it being handed to them.

The idea of allowing lower level characters access to enough influence/enhancements to make sure that they are fully slotted isn't a bad thing.

But it is better to try to allow players to figure out how to play the game in general before piling too much information on them.

You don't have to know about the invention system at all in order to play the game. You don't even need to use the market for that matter. You can get away with not having a supergroup base. You can get away with not using empowerment buffs. All these things simply make the game easier.

The invention system - and other systems and tasks - are just things to make the game more complicated in order to retain player interest.

I have no idea how many converters I have. I don't use them. I don't use the tailor tokens I get out of card packs either.

So, I don't think that new players are "left out". They simply have more to explore and goals to achieve as they play the game - which to me, is the reason to be playing the game in the first place.
