  1. The SWG system was actually fairly similar. There were something like 39 professions (classes), some combat, some non-combat. Each had four different skill lines, consisting of four skills each of increasing level. You had 250 points that could be used to acquire as many skills as you wanted from as many professions as you wanted (IIRC; there might have been a limit to the # of professions, but I know most of my characters had 3-4). Once you paid the initial point cost to learn the base profession, you could train as many of the four skill lines up as far as you wanted, each skill requiring a certain type and amount of XP, and a point cost (all corresponding to that skill's level). If you maxed all four lines, you could train a "master" skill, but mastering a profession was by no means required. As I recall, the 250 points given was enough to max out two full professions and train about half of a third.
  2. I agree it would be nice for origins to be meaningful. Unfortunately, that meaning has already been stripped out as contacts, and therefore enemy groups, have become universal. The little that remains (enhancement origins) is outdated and now reduced to little more than a nuisance and obstacle.
  3. I'd argue that the original iteration of Star Wars Galaxies (pre-NGE) did this well. Not just in terms of character appearance, but also in the customization options of choosing and combining different skill trees. But it's definitely not something you see much of in more modern MMOs.
  4. While generally good advice, not just in game but in real life, I cannot count the number of times I've encountered someone playing a catgirl or some other animal-themed character who OOCly wants to tell me about their "fursona," or the characters whose "superhero" costume looks like a dominatrix OOCly discussing their RL BDSM preferences... It happens often enough to set expectations/precedent that certain types of characters will reflect RL personalities. So, would that make him Science origin then? I don't know; it seems his powers are still a product of his species' natural characteristics, even if triggered by being in a different environment. I naturally have the ability to leap high into the air and cover great distances - if I'm on the moon. What makes it natural is that every other human (who has grown up on Earth and developed muscles under Earth's gravity) has the same ability.
  5. Even on double XP, I can spend weeks, even a month or two, leveling a character 1-50 through regular content at my usual pace. Running DFB with XP off still means running DFB. Again. And again. And again... I'll do it every once in a while, but maybe on one out of every five or six characters I play, just to break things up now and then. I often do run missions in those locations and more. Sometimes teamed, most often solo, largely because of the time of day I'm available tends to be fairly quiet.
  6. Sorry to double-reply, but it took me a while to dig this up from the feedback threads: To save following the link, Faultline's comment (since I can't quote directly from a closed thread): So no, TOs are not still supposed to drop.
  7. I'm not trying to buy TOs; as I said, I try to get by on just using loot drops for the first ~20 or so levels. I have not seen a TO drop in months; not since i27 dropped. And again, as I said, I'm not looking to purchase. This used to be a viable option. The change to TOs seems to be pushing players to spend Inf where they didn't have to before. I prefer running content other than DFB. It gets boring and repetitive, and flies through the levels too quickly. Leveling is the game experience for me; most of it anyway. I may run on 2x XP a lot, but I do it mostly through regular contact missions.
  8. I'm an altaholic, so in the time since Training enhancements were removed, I've played through several characters, from beginning to at least upper 30s-40s, if not 50. My usual path for character progression is to spend the first ~20 levels getting a feel for the character, then plot out a final IO-slotted build as a goal and respect towards that build at 27 where I can begin slotting most of what I need. Until that point, I often run on 2x XP, and save whatever Inf I do pick up along the way (and merits, etc.) to invest towards that final build. This means that until that respect, I mostly just slot whatever I happen to get as drops, in order to save Inf and not spend anything on stuff that's going to be obsolete after (usually) a few weeks of playing. Previously, this method worked rather well for me. TOs in the early levels were good enough to get me through, if nothing spectacular. Which is fine; I wasn't looking for spectacular, just to make the leveling process a little smoother. Now, with TOs gone and DOs/SOs in their place, I mostly find that I end up with a lot of enhancements I can't use because of origin conflicts, which results in me leaving a lot of slots empty until the lvl 27 respect. I've even tried being more careful about what contacts I take, trying to get missions against enemies that should get me the right origin enhancements, and I still end up with a lot of useless stuff. Training Origin enhancements were just that - for training. Their advantage was in being origin-dependent. Especially now that characters aren't herded towards origin-specific contacts, having enhancements available that aren't locked to origin was useful. Now I find that climb to 27 to be more difficult and tedious, and I've dropped more character builds before getting to that target respect level than I normally do, just because I get tired of the grind without the benefit of slotting. Yes, I realize I could spend my Inf to get DOs/SOs, and the automatic upgrade system, but frankly that drains more Inf than I want to sink into levels that I won't spend much time at. It's a personal choice, but there it is; just one player's experience. Please bring back TOs, or make it easier somehow to get enhancements that fit one's origin.
  9. If only we'd had a Tron sequel that actually featured, I don't know, TRON? For more than two seconds and one line, anyway.
  10. Dropped after half an hour? Base building. Major respect to those with the patience to learn and deal with this system.
  11. Confirming this same problem on a /Shield Scrapper.
  12. I'm seeing this same problem on a Scrapper, so does not appear to be AT-dependent.
  13. The interesting thing is that the leg slider does not seem to be a linear scale. The difference from the default (mid) point to the maximum is much less than the difference from mid to minimum. So going to max only makes the legs a little bit longer than the default, but dropping them to minimum makes them a lot shorter.
  14. So, here's the thing about "average" height in CoH (this is all going off of memory, so the details may be off). When the game launched, the height slider maxed out at 7 feet. Players wanted to make their characters taller, but the devs didn't want to do the work of altering the world to accommodate 8-foot tall characters, or making the characters larger would do odd things with the sliders, or there was some other technical reason that made it difficult to do (I don't recall exactly, and I've heard multiple reasons given). So instead what they did was change the scale on the slider in the character creator. "7 feet" got relabeled as "8 feet," and the rest of the scale adjusted accordingly. So a character who was previously 7 feet tall was now 8 feet tall. Not that they were physically any taller though; only the labels changed. What this means is that the starting heights and average heights were now all physically shorter than they had previously been. But this change only applied to players' characters. All the NPCs in the world were not rescaled. So if for example an NPC was previously 6 feet tall, when measured against the new scale they were suddenly 6' 10", relative to player character heights. Or, to compare in the other direction, a player character set to 6 feet on the new scale would only be 5' 3" compared to the NPCs. So this is why when you make a character "average" height, it seems like a lot of NPCs tower over them. The CoH devs effectively "shrunk" the player character scale. Players wanted to be able to make their characters taller, but relatively speaking, the dev's solution had the opposite effect. Yep! Typical human proportions are a torso to leg ratio between 1:1.1 to 1:1.5. The default leg length in CoH gives a ratio of about 1:2 (rough estimate), so yes, they are significantly longer than normal and appear a bit unnatural.
  15. Heh, Stalker is the one AT I didn't actually check the power sets for as it's not one I play often. Makes sense though; a large axe isn't the stealthiest of weapons! ;) Thanks for the tips! I'd been thinking Brute, but that's good to know about shield being better on Tanker/Scrapper. I do a lot of solo play, and I find Tankers a bit slow for that, so Scrapper makes sense.
  16. I know Battle Axe has it's issues, but if you were going to build a themed character on Battle Axe and Shield Defense, would it be Tanker, Brute, Stalker, or Scrapper, and why?
  17. Came to make a joke at the expense of a typo in the title. Realized there was no typo.
  18. Good catch on the HoB Def; I missed that it was toggled on. I may shuffle things a bit. Thanks for all the other pointers; I'll play around with it some more.
  19. This build is pure theory-crafting, which admittedly I'm not the best at. After Nemu's comments about Ranged Def, I tried modifying my original build to see what Def I could squeak out of it. So this is what I came up with; S/L/E/R Def are effectively softcapped (at full Stealth bonus, so practically they sit around 43%), with solid numbers for other defenses and even some respectable Res (S/L 23.2%, F/C 32%). Again, leaving out Aging Touch for both T1 and T2 DP powers is just a personal choice. You could swap out Stealth, Invisibility, and Burnout for Maneuvers, Tactics, and Vengeance, which would make the practical Def numbers a little better. I tend to avoid leadership because I solo a lot, and I don't always find the END cost of powers meant to affect a group worth the tradeoff. The slotting is pretty tight to get set bonuses; there are a lot of things I'd like to do with just one or two more slots here or there, but I'm not sure I can free any up elsewhere without sacrificing the goal of the build. I have no idea how effective this would be in practice, and I imagine it takes quite a DPS hit over other builds, but if I get the chance I'll try it out and report back. 20. I actually noticed the similarities between your build and Crysis'. Yeah, I'm not likely to build around a P2W power. This is what I came up with playing around in Mid's. This is more of a leveling build to use before getting to 50; once at 50 of course I'd upgrade the ATOs and probably swap in a few purples. I tend to take my time leveling though, so I like to plan IOs to use before I can get those. I might swap around what levels some powers are taken depending on how things go, but the slotting is what I'll aim for along the way. I went with Dual Wield over Aging Touch mainly because thematically I liked having the attacks be pistol based, so just a personal preference. I took Suppressive Fire for stacking holds with Time Stop. I did lean heavily into Def bonuses, even for ranged, and think I got some respectable numbers. S/L Def is a little over the soft cap, but that doesn't account for Stealth not giving its full bonus in combat. If my numbers are right, in combat they should be just over 45%. Invisibility was taken as a LotG mule; but I could probably swap it out for something else if there's a better choice. Maybe Time Shift? I wouldn't have extra slots available for it though. Of course the build is a work in progress, and I'm open to suggestions. 21. I'm curious about the use of Scorpion Shield, indicating a Def build, but then skipping out on six-slotting both Blaster ATOs, missing out on some solid Def bonuses. Is it because they focus on ranged Def? I've heard DP spends a lot of time in melee.
  22. I'm looking for a decent and up to date Dual Pistols/Temporal Manipulation build. I found a few searching the archives here, but most were over a year old and none I could find have been posted since the i27 Blaster Secondary changes. So if anyone has a current build they are using, please share!
  23. The man is a legend; practically a force of nature.
  24. Tip 1: Never respond to a LFG request in the LFG channel; always send a tell. Tip 2: Never accept blind invites. Tip 3: If you still find yourself on a team you didn't intend to join, quit immediately. No need to be rude or disruptive, you can just say "Sorry, somehow I ended up on the wrong team," then drop. So far as the idea that the power-leveling team leader was trying to be helpful or generous, so what? Even if that was the intent, it does not excuse blind invites to lower level characters. Not all players want to be power leveled; to invite someone who didn't ask for it and with no prior communication about what sort of group the invite is for is just plain rude.
