Avengers: Doomsday - Full Cast Announcement
ShardWarrior replied to ZacKing's topic in Comic, Hero & Villain Culture
There was a report on the local news here this morning about this. The reason given was there will be 4 different trailers focusing on 4 different characters, each released on a different week. It seems to be a gimmick to get people to pay to see Avatar: Fire and Ash again and boost ticket sales. I guess they seem to think this will work as back in the day there were people who paid full price for a movie just to see the trailer for Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and then left. -
I rather like the idea of being able to donate inf to a panhandler and rewarding badges based on total donations. Would make for a fun little inf sink. That is not a bad idea either!

page 3 [FOCUSED FEEDBACK] Super Strength Adjustments
ShardWarrior replied to The Curator's topic in [Open Beta] Focused Feedback
I see that now, thank you. Having toyed around with this a bit more on Brainstorm, I think I will just keep my SS/Inv tankers as they are with Rage. UM is nice, but the lackluster damage boost from it makes my characters less super. The -RES on the Rage crash seems overly punitive. If the goal is to make the Rage crash more equitable, why not get rid of the -DEF and -RES and just increase the length of time the damage debuff is applied and slightly increase the end drain from it. Probably not something that would ever be considered, but it is a thought. UM makes more sense for Scrappers because they would make up for the lackluster damage buff from their critical hits. -

I copied over my SS/Inv tanker and switched out Rage for Unleashed Might. No crash is nice, but you are markedly weaker in terms of damage output. I understand the reasoning for less damage with UM versus Rage, but it could use a slight uptick for +DMG. Not much, just a bit. I had a question about the design philosophy for this - was it that you would take both Rage and UM and use Rage during tougher EB/AV fights or was UM meant to be a replacement for Rage altogether? Overall, the changes worked as expected. -
Netflix to Acquire Warner Brothers

Also could be Paramount trying to get Netflix to overspend. Either way, WB is not worth the money being offered for it. -
Something other than GoTG?

Which is incredibly stupid. Paramount/Skydance will never recoup that should this deal go through. WB simply is not worth that kind of money. -

Both. I do not dislike James Gunn and I very much enjoyed GoTG. All his films are the same though, just with a different setting. I do not think he was the best choice by WB to take over the DCU. He is not horrible, but I think they could have done better. I think the days of cinema and going to the movies is over. $14 - $16 a ticket is crazy, but you will spend ten times that on popcorn, snacks and a drink. That is what is killing theaters. -
Looks like a typical James Gunn movie. If you have seen one, you have seen them all. Watching this, it could easily be Gamora: Woman of Tomorrow or Nebula: Woman of Tomorrow or Mantis: Woman of Tomorrow. It looks like yet another GoTG clone to me, with a setting that could easily be in Knowhere. I love Milly Alcock. She has real talent and adored her on House of the Dragon. This will be a wait for streaming for me.

Paramount Moving On from Kelvin Timeline Trek

I know the "skant" is canon, but a Klingon of all people in one is just too much. I am definitely out. -

I agree with you. You give some great examples of successful filmmakers being faithful to the IP. I think Prey is an excellent example. It is also an example of how to do more with less. So many things done right with that movie - character driven, light use of VFX, well written and developed main character, extremely talented actress cast in the main role. Huge difference between Naru in Prey and Rey in the latest Star Wars garbage. The problem I see with filmmakers from streaming services is two-fold - first, they are too wrapped up in the visual spectacle and believe that makes up for a weak story and poorly written characters. It does not, especially given the lessons learned from Star Trek, particularly the feature films. When you have a good story with good characters, VFX is icing on the cake. See the aforementioned Prey. Second, they hire the wrong people whom they mistakenly believe will "bring a fresh perspective" or "update for a modern audience" existing IPs that already have built-in fan bases. See The Rings of Power on Amazon and anything and everything produced under the Kurtzman era for Star Trek. Michael Chabon specifically mentioned looking for writers who "knew nothing about Star Trek". How do you write for a series and property you know nothing about? -

Gene Roddenberry had already passed away before DS9 and Voyager, so he could not have had any opinion on them. 1987 - 1969 = 18 years. TOS was popular enough that fans had letter writing campaigns to try and keep the show going during its initial run, as I am sure you already know. Yes, it became even more popular once it went into syndication, however the gap between the cancellation of TOS to the premier of TNG was 18 years. The world had changed a lot in that time. Roddenberry disliked a lot of things done with Star Trek, however the IP still grew in popularity. The underlying idea of a hopeful, positive vision of humanity and the future was there and remained after Roddenberry had passed away. Of course no one did exactly what Roddenberry wanted all of the time. It is also important to remember that TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT were successful in their own right despite Gene Roddenerry in many instances. As I am sure you already know, writers such as Ron Moore were hoping for a darker setting for Voyager given the premise of the show, however those ideas got axed as it strayed too far from Roddenberry's vision. Also important to note is not everything Roddenberry wrote or was involved with writing was gold. What better time for Star Trek than one where people do not see a hopeful future? TOS was produced not so far off from the height of the Cold War, during the Vietnam war and the Civil Rights movement in the US. A great many did not see a hopeful future of humanity during that time. The world was not a stable, harmonious place in the era between 1987 and 1994 either. You had the first Gulf War, Tiananman Square, riots in Los Angeles and the bombing of the World Trade Center to name a few. Sure, there may be many who see no future for themselves or humanity right now. I would argue there are just as many, if not more who see a bright future for themselves. The point is that there has always been people who feel the future is dark and dismal. This is not unique to this day and age. Star Trek was successful with a great many who felt that way, and seeing a bright future - even a fictional one - gave them hope and inspired them. The primary reason modern Star Trek stinks is because it was put into the hands of idiots who quite clearly did not understand or respect the source material. -

There was an 18 year gap between the cancellation of TOS in 1969 and the premiere of TNG in 1987. Not only did TNG appeal to original fans (eventually!), it more than succeeded in bringing in a whole new generation of fans. It did so by sticking to the core values and ideas of the property, and having many of the people who worked on the original series involved with the production helped. It also helped to have people who cared about the IP who carried it forward after Roddenberry passed away. I think the ideals and hopeful vision of the future is relevant to any age. -

Do you think this is even possible in the world of today? Personally, I believe the era when current social commentary could be made respectfully in a fictitious setting while showing a positive vision for the future is long gone. The "writers" of today seem to have no respect or regard for the Star Trek IP and can do nothing with it other than rehash what has been done before. True creatives like Frank Herbert, Phillip K. Dick, J.R.R. Tolkien, George Lucas and Gene Roddenberry are rare, and with AI becoming more and more integrated into Hollywood, there will no longer be any need for them. I completely agree I with wanting to see the story continue and with the end of events like the Dominion War and Voyager's return home, there are plenty of stories still left out there and plenty of threads to pick up on. -
I would not object to a horde of vicious Rikti monkeys.

Netflix to Acquire Warner Brothers
ShardWarrior replied to ShardWarrior's topic in Comic, Hero & Villain Culture
I saw this yesterday. I very much doubt a Skydance/Paramount takeover would be allowed. There were grumblings about monopolies and anti-trust suits if Netflix bought WB. Skydance/Paramount would for sure get the same scrutiny, if not more so. I disagree. I liked GoTG a lot. At least to me, the rest of James Gunn's films seemed like GoTG remakes. Its the same humor, same kind of characters, just in a different setting. Many times watching Superman, I felt like I was watching Super-Quill. Superman was not horrible - it was a lot better than a lot of the recent MCU garbage. With that said, I think there are people who can do a better job with these characters. -

Take this with an enormous grain of salt, but if the rumor articles floating about in the last day or two are true, Starfleet Academy is already cancelled before even airing. -

Netflix to Acquire Warner Brothers

I would assume for the same reason Skydance is scrapping pretty much everything Trek related so they can start from scratch. The new DCU has not been as successful as WB had hoped and I have read various articles over the last few days about the future of the DCU with this merger. There seems to be several reasons, several of which are related to TPTB at Netflix not liking the new Gunn-verse to Netflix phasing out theatrical releases to a Netflix exec being a huge Snyder fan. It is all rumor at this point, but I would not be surprised if James Gunn is let go eventually, especially if Netflix has other people in mind to take over. I imagine over the next year we are going to see quite a lot of people at WB getting let go, especially those in redundant positions. -

This sounds a lot like last Sunday's sermon at our local Church chapter. 👼😉 All joking aside, this is something most people never understood. They just enjoyed poking fun at Shatner for being over the top and his usual playfully hammy self. Far from it. Shatner knew exactly what to do with this scene, and his brilliance is even more evident knowing that Shatner and Ricardo Montalbán never shared the same set or even filmed at the same time. That is talent. Shatner is very much under-rated as an actor. -

I say this with one hundred percent confidence - I am out. I have to agree, who is this being made for? -
"HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Dec. 5, 2025 -- Today, Netflix, Inc. (the Company) and Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc. (WBD) announced they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Netflix will acquire Warner Bros., including its film and television studios, HBO Max and HBO." Full article - https://about.netflix.com/en/news/netflix-to-acquire-warner-bros Very curious to see how this plays out with regard to the James Gunn DCU projects as there are quite a lot of rumors floating around that both Gunn and Saffron will be out.

Agreed! The rewards simply are not worth the extra tedium in my opinion. These settings did not make any of the content harder, just more tedious.

To be honest, I am really not that excited for this movie. I just do not see it as saving the MCU at this point.
