So, I've rolled an ill/Dark, and been having some fun with it. Currently 27ish and running common IO's in him, but looking towards some shenanigans with recharge, and seeing if I can attain the fabled Perma-PA... as well as pulling good Defense/Recovery.

So, here it is - expensive as hell, barely makes the Perma-mark for PA (can't believe that takes more recharge than Perma-Hasten), but doable. Thoughts/critiques/improvements welcome... Only criteria is that I'd really like to take a villain pool, as I'm redside with this guy (concept reasons), but the pool isn't fixed.

Death is the best debuff.

Posted (edited)

I absolutely hate to see build posts twisting in the wind, because god knows it's been done to me more than a few times. I'm too drunk to analyze your build right now (for which I'm sorry, but I am very rarely sober in the evenings); nevertheless, here's what I've put together on Justin/Pineapple. I was intrigued by /Dark myself, particularly the way it works (or doesn't) with Ill/; I also asked myself "what does /Cold have that /Dark doesn't, because it would be a lot more thematic to be an Ill/Dark than an Ill/Cold?". Fully incarnated (natch), as Ill/Dark/Ice I could not attain the same performance as Ill/Cold/Ice (and thank god for that, because I don't think I could stand another reroll). It's not a dog of a build for certain, it just doesn't have Ill/Cold's sheer ability to stack -Res and maintain it without breaking a sweat. It can solo a pylon, but compared to what I'm used to it's painfully slow. It can also send a L54 spawn packing easily, and is obscenely tanky between Fade and the fact that you can include a PBAoE self-heal in a regular attack chain if you so wish. On the other hand, Fluffy made the Phantasm, which I previously considered utterly daft, seem like Rhodes Scholar, because it got itself into harm's way all the time and quickly bought it. I slotted it with Basilisk's Gaze for a cheap +Recharge, but perhaps there's a better way.

It is also damn near unworkable without Ageless Destiny, at least for someone who is used to Heat Loss - Soul Absorption is a pale shadow of Heat Loss, especially in a "single hard target" situation.

You'll notice that I am not taking Superior Invis because Shadow Fall + Stealth IO in Sprint = full invis for PvE purposes. Also, Afterburner might not be your cup of tea, but I am a flier and I love flying fast, so I always take it; you can certainly trade it in for Superior Invis or Group Invis that will happily mule the LOTG for you.

One thing I can see right off the bat in your build is YUGE regeneration which is of no use to you (you have a very quick-recharging self heal). You probably could go without it and not lose much survivability. Regardless, I'm sure that comparing your build and mine you can distill something worthwhile as far as optimization goes... and if you want to keep this conversation going, I'll try to respond when I am less inebriated next time.

Here is my build. Best of luck.

Dark Watchers is the way I went to max out the PBAOE -ToHit he does. I use Fluffy as essentially a walking -ToHit debuff summoned into the middle of a pack. Usually after Spectral or PAs cos he can't handle Alphas. Once he's in there he's useful for the -ToHit, -Dam and sporadic melee heals (which have some -regen but meh amounts).

Here's my current build, which isn't perma PAs and designed for teams. PA has about a 7 second downtime but I'm not soloing AVs so I don't mind too much. Pluses are that I'm currently only using two purples (Soulbounds from two converted drops) and none of the ATOs, so it's reasonably cheap. I'm (ab)using PBed Fade + Group Invis which gets me to the softcap to all myself and gives my teammates ~30% defense across the board too. Downside is that Conserve Power and Power Bolt are both poop and Torrent isn't great either (it'll take a Forced Feedback and is quick to animate).

I chose Sorcery for my movement because it suits the char. Plus Mystic Flight has the TP built in for when my pets decide to wall my into a small room (or someone elses do). You could chop and change between Arcane Bolt and Spirit Ward (I've saved a few people with timely Wards), having mez protection available is nice via Runes.

There's room there to move some procs (from Spectral, DS and Phantasm) for set bonuses once I start going for more Purps. I don't farm so not really in a huge rush to do that (altisis gets in the way).

Thank you for both the feedback and the spark, as you see, a few others chimed in.

Idiot move on my part, forgot about Shadow/Stealth, really dumb, as it is what I'm running on live (skipped SI/GI).

Clearly, I need to look at both the toss-ups and my own build... time for tweaks. And, yeah, I'm sure it's not the powerhouse it could be, however, it feels strong and very thematic - AND it is a unique toon, as no other AT can get the combo (similar to TW/Nin - Scrapper only).

Thank you, and thanks to everyone else who chimed in once the dam broke.

Death is the best debuff.

And here we go again. No perma-PA, but pretty close. Kinda makes it look towards Agility/Spiritual Core for +Rech as well.

Hard to fit everything if I take Leadership > Fighting... I'm tempted to go selfish on it.

Dang it. How'd I miss that. 1.5% extra recharge and, more importantly Acc built in so I can free up a slot.

Precious slot!

Yeah that's my preferred slotting too. Another advantage is all Dark Servant's powers have -Tohit, so you get a good amount of mileage from the Cloud Sense Dmg proc.   He sometimes kills whatever he fixates on while I'm taking care of the main targets...  You can also get some decent mileage out of the Gravitation Anchor proc, since his Tenebrous Tentacles is aoe.  The holds frequently stack with his Petrifying Gaze hold.   At least one Heal IO makes a big difference too.  Finally, I also usually slot the +Res pet IOs into the other pet powers.   All combined Fluffly becomes reasonably self-sustaining and tanky....

This is the one I've been using, got perma PA and it's probably the char I had most fun with ever. Hope you might get an idea or two from here:

Ill/Dark just sounded awesome, so I recently rolled one.  First real /Dark/ anything.  I know....  Player since '06 and still barely scratched the surface 😄

Here is the build I came up with, but haven't really tested it yet.  Mids makes it seem pretty solid...  Perma Hasten/PA/Fade.  Good defenses in combination with good To Hit debuffs, and moderate resists for those hits that get thru when I pull agro with my fire attacks.  Rune available more than 50% of the time, so I think this guy should be pretty hard to kill.

I took /Fire as my epic.  Probably will for my Judgement as well.  Haven't thought about other incarnates much yet.

Tough is just a proc mule, but I suppose I could toggle it on for S/L resist cap if needed and not too End hungry.  Soul Absorption should keep me good on +end since it is almost perma too...

Let me know if you see any glaring holes or problems.  One thing I see that it looks like either I don't understand or Mids isn't picking up is that I have 7.5% recharge bonus x 6.  I thought it was only 5...?  LOTG Proc x 4, + Gladiator Net and Basilisk's Gaze.

Thanks for looking!

Wow @5099y_74c05...  You obviously put a lot of time and energy into reviewing my build and responding to my post, so thank you very much!  Your feedback is dead on as well.  There were several choices I made that I wasn't crazy about but did it for the +rech.  Slotting the heal for debuff...  ya...  I knew...  [shrug]

Your suggestions were awesome!  Thanks again!

think this build will have a very hard time with Endurance and Recovery. Even if you don't exemplar that low you are basically at the mercy of maintaining a certain kill rate to maintain stacks of Soul Absorption.

Ya it does...  it is truly a debuff beast but quickly burns through endurance without Soul Absorption.  Popping that off before a big fight though really seems to do the trick.  It's still a blast to play though.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Shadow Fall and Superior Invisibility mutually exclusive (cannot activate both at once)?

Want more from Praetoria? Check out my level 40+ Praetoria missions in AE! I've got 3 complete arcs so far.
Praetorians can get to AE in Pocket D by going through Studio 55.

Correct.  But Shadow Fall and Group Invisibility are not mutually exclusive.

What this team needs is more Defenders

Yes, I knew this much.

Given this information, I'd recommend that OP switch out Superior Invisibility for Group Invisibility to get the stacking defense benefits.  Since OP has enough recharge to have near-perma PA, Group Invis will be up all the time anyway (if stealth is a concern).
