Street Level - Fisticuffs Melee Mastermind. Thugs/Time

First of all,  this is my gimmick have fun Mastermind.   So take that as it is.  What got me thinking about this was last month when I re-watched parts of the the Daredevil TV show on Netflix.  Daredevil is a street level hero.  He was never involved in the Marvel movies. But according to the timeline he was doing other street level stuff.   Thugs was used because this is a street level hero build that has sidekicks that help him fight crime.   I went with /Time because of the +Defense and the PBAOE heal.   This is about getting in close and punching things, just getting into the scrum and beating face!  Boxing, Cross Punch, Kick, Brawl.  You don't need to use them all since they are all such low recharge, just two are required for a solid attack chain.  But hey, its about fun! So variety rules.   The trick is to keep your Sidekicks in melee range with you. So when I play it I use the Goto command quite often. That way I can heal them if i need to.   This build can do PI portal missions at +4x8.   I'm generally, a /Nature player so I feel that endurance can be an issue if you go to crazy on the heals.  But I'm not sure if that is just me being used to the -70% endurance cost that nature provides.  However it is a fun build if you like to smack villain face.  

 

I basically, play it like an old school Dark Age of Camelot /assist train, where I'm the main Assist.    I don't know if any of you used to play Dark Age of Camelot, or know what an Assist Train is.   An Assist Train is where a group has 1 person who is there to designate targets for everyone to beat on all at once.  The other players would all use the /assist command to make sure they all targeted the same target as the lead.   The Lead would go after priority targets first, Mezzers/CC'rs, Healers, Debuffers, DPS, then last would be enemy tanks.  I mimic the /assist command by of course using the "Petcom_all Attack".  Then we steam roll target by target.     As always,  as I play it more and get more experience, I may end up trying to fit in Provoke to mimic the villains getting angry with me as we beat into submission.

I had a very similar idea of a punchy MM when building Thugs/Time. I ended up using dual wield + cross punch instead of boxing/kicking because it just outperforms them significantly. With FF in both attacks and cross punch's recharge you have an absolutely ridiculous recharge...unfortunately not much you can use it on. Derp. The punchiness feel is real though, you are right there in the thick of things laying down the pain. I really like it.

I had a similar idea recently as I was inspired by the Leviathan proccing thread. Which of course highlights the biggest omission in your build: Knockout Blow (From Leviathan Mastery. You aren't a worthy puncher until you have your finishing blow!

First off DOAC Wow.. I loved that game.. Played with Shadowclan.. RP guild.. Was great, great fun.. the PVP was awesome.. Great ideas for its time..

 

As you know, big petless mm player here.. 

Had a concept of a Time Thugs or Dark Thugs, last pet only and gang war. 

Build out my character to look like last toon.  Call him Nega Scott. Like from Scott Pilgrim. 

and go the route of melee attacks. 

 

My question I posted in General discussion and will ask here.

 

Anyone ever play a Smash Lethal defense cap only build ? 

 

I never did. I am always defense cap. I would forgo resistance over defense cap. It has served me extremely well. 

But I also realize I might be missing out on creating much better builds if Smash Lethal is viable with Smash Lethal resistance cap. 

 

For me as I mentioned in the past,  Petless  and Semi Petless is weak already for many reasons. Lacking defenses is just adding insult to injury. 

 

Currently working Smash Lethal and Range cap based on the other thread.

Incarnate Alpa would defense cap range. 

You put farsight on perma toggle.

 

Wish they had some sort of Earth mastery to simulate tossing a boulder like last thug does.

This would fall more into the Nega Scott theme.

 

You would have to rely on Darkest Night for defense cap for Range and AOE. 

You are melee capped and almost smash lethal.

Ha!    I have several of these builds too and it's what led me to look at the Leviathan MM Gimmicks I posted about:  

 

Here's a very extreme version, where I give up capped Smash/Lethal Resistance down to a still respectable 59% and Defense down to 32%.  So roughly one small purple insp away from soft cap, which let's the build fit in lots of procs and the following melee character powers:

 

  • Boxing                
  • Kick                
  • Cross Punch        
  • Knockout Blow
  • Spring Attack
  • Provoke

 

So very much like Shield Defense melee character but on a MM, with some team support.   


Then if that's still not enough melee attacks you still have

  • Sands of Mu - Free Patron Power
  • And basic Brawl   (which oddly w/Kinetic Combat chance for knockdown seems glitched and at least on MM appears to have near 100% chance to proc )

 

 

This was a concept build, so I was surprised when it performed really well and was extremely fun to play.  I like to test my builds on Solo ITFs and this one finished +2/+8 without needing temp powers.     But I will say not having a proced out ranged hold to shut down and take out Surgeons/Sappers was annoying, so I would probably give up something up to fit 'Time Stop' into the build.
