I learned defense cap from Adeon Hawkwood back in the day. It was like my new religion when I understood it. I seen this guy surviving and killing things on my team that made me die a million times over and I had IOs.. But I was frankenslotting with no clue on game mechanics..  Yes I was doing more DPS but I was also dying left and right. 

Overall he was actually doing more dps because of runs from the hospital I had to do.

Nonetheless we met on the forums and read his threads and other he pointed me to..

You said something as fact.. I say its impossible based on experience and game play and game mechanics. I am NOT speaking from theorycraft. 

You stuck to your guns. 

In my head I was like am I wrong, I could be wrong. You picked the 3 strongest groups in the game and said your soloing 4/8 against them.  I've been on full teams that have had issues with these mobs. You might as well tell me you have magic powers in real life.

 

And its not derailing this thread.. Because your telling new players that Storm set and specifically a storm mastermind can do these amazing things.. I believe that is is misinformation.

Actually I’ve enjoyed the back and forth here a ton.  Just wanted to say I didn’t find any of this discourse derailing the topic.  Bots are Bots and Storm is Storm.  Slotting is never really a big secret out there....anyone can do anything they want and test for themselves.  I always a learn a lot from creative discourse.  That’s why the forums exist in the first place.

Has this game changed in 8 years it was dormant ? NO..  My 8 year old build is just as relevant today as it was 8 years ago.. Game mechanics has not changed..

You can search my name and clearly see I asked the player(s) behind the proc monster stuff and even they conceded that surviability on some of their builds were difficult.

Procs are great but not at the detriment to player survivability. No player.. No pets.  

Further again the procs don't exactly work that well as expected on many powers. 

Yet again you can see my work and logs with Oil Slick on the forums. The procs were minimal.

Again I did the work.. I have the post to prove it.  

I am running petless masterminds on 4/8 against certain mobs - circle of thorns.

There are players that can't run 1/8 setting on IO builds. Only because they don't understand game mechanics.

 

 

 

Plainguy, I have read and learned much from a lot of your posts.  But you’ve said here repeatedly that the issue you have is once mezzed “the pets do nothing.”  I’ve never really had that experience.  I run Bots/Time, Thugs/Time and Thugs/Storm high recharge/softcapped DEF builds all the time.  I get mezzed on occasion.  It’s rare given my +DEF but it does happen.  But my pets keep right on following the last command given in those situations.  It could be because they are set on Defensive Follow most of the time, but I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a time when they just....stopped doing anything....when I the MM am mezzed/stunned/whatever.  I lose the ability to do anything until I break out of it but they don’t.

 

Maybe it’s a matter of game mechanic timings but you’ll see in the video that was just posted the MM gets mezzed/stunned frequently.  The Bots keep doing their thing regardless.  

 

Also, FX may be set on minimal, but I don’t think player is even using Hurricane.

Even set to Defensive/Follow, the pets will still act when attacked. When the MM is mezzed, pets will only do nothing if set to Passive. Though even while mezzed, I believe they will continue attacking a single target if set to Passive/Attack My Target.

Yeah, my experience as well.

 

Honestly, very few of my MM's (and I've got over a dozen) have any kind of mezz protection outside of breakfrees.  I think that's sort of the point of a MM....your henchman are doing most of the work so even if you get mezzed, you just wait for it to wear off and keep on trucking.  But that's also why I'm such a big advocate of softcapped +DEF vs Resists, I don't have to get mezzed at all if I dodge everything.

The only time I'll die to carnies on the /storm masterminds is if I get a really badly timed mez after issuing an attack order on a master illusionist. This is sometimes necessary, as your pets will typically get stuck fighting the decoy phantasms and such instead of killing the boss. You don't get bodyguard and you might get chunked before you can reach for a break free, but it's rarely an issue. Both thug and bot variations eat carnies alive.

@ScarySai    I'm curious about two powers in your posted older build and your game play style:

 

Provoke / Tankerminding:

 

I always thought you wanted Provoke on sets with AOE heals to melt away the spread out damage from Body Guard mode.      What function is Provoke serving in your game play?   And how are you using Provoke without having even a self heal, soft cap, res cap etc.?     Is it mainly to keep critters from running?   Or are you actively trying to tank with your MM...

 

 

Electrifying Fences:  

 

Has great activation time, combined with small radius giving it decent PPM chances so it's arguably the best of the MM Patron Immobilizes.    BUT with /Storm a lot of your mitigation comes from KD and Electrifying Fences is the one Epic MM Immob that does -KB, effectively giving your enemies KB protection to your /Storm powers.    Are you finding this to be an issue?     When do you use Electrifying Fences?

It's used far less often than on my other MMs, due to my /storm's relatively lower survivability compared to my others. Still, I'll use it to line of sight dangerous mobs so they don't smash my pets, or to lure distant mobs into my death traps. If support hybrid is up, I just spam it since I'm pretty hard to kill when it's up. Same thing for my thug/storm, which is much squishier.

 

I have no qualms with popping insps when solo clearing, too, so if I feel like clearing fast instead of testing my limits, I'll just spam provoke in the middle of a storm cluster and watch things die.

I strongly prefer Soul Mastery for /storm, and use that on my thug/storm, I mainly took /mu for teaming on the bots/storm because

 

1: Thunderstorm still knocked back when fighting mobs below +4 with the slotting on that build.

 

2: The build was made for when mastermind AI was still borked and staying at range was kind of a gamble.

 

3: I'd just spam it when things get tightly together to keep things in the burn patches, as my pets and I would have high enough defenses to just eat whatever.

 

4: It was an experimental build, I was in the process of testing Bots/storm and the Thug/storm relentlessly, before ultimately settling on thugs to due preference. Hence why I reference a better build I'm keeping private a few times during that argument. 😛
