Avilister Posted July 20, 2020 Posted July 20, 2020 So after reading the Poison guide and some other threads that talk about the power set, I decided I wanted to try it out for myself. I opted to pair it with Dual Pistols, another set I've never played (despite its popularity). I used a bit of the information I found in the related threads to put this build together, but I've only just started leveling my Defender (really, more of an Offender), and its only up to the mid-20s. As a result, I don't know how sound these picks are. Please, let me know if I'm doing something wrong, or could have made some better choices. kiramon Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 The interesting thing about poison is.. you don’t really ever get to see it do anything. It just does it. that being said, proc out your poison trap, don’t take paralytic poison unless you’re proccing it out as well. Personally I use FF to get poison trap up more often to proc more. Yum yum
Zinnar Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 (edited) I've been running and workshopping a mid-level "procmonster" build for Poison/DP with one of my friends. It manages to get a lot of damage, but more importantly it can toss out a lot of -res debuffs and some decent utility. Also, it has capped S/L defenses, ~40% Energy defense, and about ~45% S/L resistance. You could swap Stealth for Combat Jumping if you wanted, some of your defense numbers would be a bit lower but your S/L will still be capped if you still put the LoTG into CJ. For single-targets I use Suppressive Fire->Empty Clips -> Dual Wield. If they're a really hard single target, I use Suppressive Fire-> Corrosive Vial ->Empty Clips -> Dual Wield. The ideal place for this build is in melee running Venomous Gas, dropping a Poison Trap, and hitting Hail of Bullets and Bullet Rain. I'm pretty proud of it, and even where I'm at (level 32, lacking a lot of the later defenses in the build) it can solo pretty well because of the AOE and debuffs. I pack a bunch of purples and greens when soloing. On a team I bring mostly blues, because I'm a lot safer and can just spam Empty Clips, Bullet Rain, and my debuffs along with Antidote. It's also "cheap", relatively speaking- the most expensive parts are the Defender ATO sets and the Gladiator's Javelin proc in Suppressive Fire, at least on Everlasting. Avilister Posted July 21, 2020 Author Posted July 21, 2020 (edited) With feedback, I've tweaked the build a bit. I did really want the Experimentation pool on this character (and my leveling build has it just to play around with some of the powers), but wasn't quite sure how to fit it in. This switches back to that, moves some slots around, and drops a few things to make room. Having read some other threads about the pool, I'm not quite ready to buy into Corrosive Vial. Also, I don't want to drop the Leadership powers because they're very strong on Defenders. I'm also willing to gamble on not needing quite as much built-in defense, as the Poison debuffs help to make up quite a lot of difference. Venomous Gas autohits their to-hit down by around 19% all on its own, which has the function of substantially increasing melee defense. Weaken can further debuff their to-hit, functionally capping most defenses against the primary target. I guess we'll see. I want to play it a bit at the high end to get a feel for whether it needs more built-in or not. Hjarki Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 1 hour ago, Avilister said: With feedback, I've tweaked the build a bit. I'm not too interested in soloing in general, so my hope is that there'll usually be someone else on the team soaking up agro for me, and the Leadership buffs will help them to do that. Against +3 enemies, it will be more like -12% from Venomous Gas. Also, Weaken isn't a very reliable source of -hit because it has a tiny radius. While it can certainly perform its task against single targets, most of the single targets you really want to cripple in this fashion will also have AV/GM resistances - which cuts the combination of Venomous Gas + Weaken down to 8% or so against even level targets and 5% or so against +3 targets. I've spent a lot of time playing around with various Poison builds and my suspicion is that you'll find you die horribly and repeatedly. You need to venture into the most dangerous part of the battle to apply Venomous Gas and you're going to get killed when you do. Also, you need to remember that any sort of control effect shuts down Venomous Gas itself, eliminating any defense you might glean from it. Even though the combination of -damage from Poison and Toxic Ammo can sharply reduce the amount of incoming damage, they're both slaved to the ability to remain free of status effects - which won't happen with the kind of defenses you're running. I eventually gave up on my Poison/DP not just because of these defense issues but also due to another issue: Soul Drain. When I build a Defender, one of my goals is to be able to match a Blaster's performance while solo. Not precisely - but close enough that I can do roughly equivalent damage once you factor in all the buffs/debuffs. A Poison/* Defender can do this against a single target. Against large crowds, they really need Soul Drain to bridge the difference. Now, Dual Pistols is a great set. But it's a 'proc monster' set. Without a Sniper attack, it really needs to slot single target attacks for procs to match the performance of sets with sniper attacks. Likewise, you need to slot those AEs for proc-based damage rather than being able to depend on the raw damage of the attacks. However, Poison is not a particularly good pairing for such an approach because it doesn't have either of the two features that really make proc monster builds shine: defense and recharge. There's simply too much you need from set bonuses to make Poison work to have enough left over to make Dual Pistols work. What I'm seeing from your builds are all the same problems that led me to abandon the Poison/DP approach and go with Poison/Fire. While Fire is often problematic because it can't easily accept procs - not have a KB AE means that what is (on paper) exceptional AE is actually quite a bit weaker in practice than other sets that may not seem like awesome AE initially - I can't afford those procs if I want to hit the defense/recharge goals I have in mind.
Ankhammon Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 Try this one for size. you don't have big amounts of Defense but you are giving into the debuff side of the world. Using power boost allows you to do all sorts of crazy debuffing. You get a personal heal and soul drain to boot. and your end worries are much more manageable. Frosticus Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 I think the most important thing for poison is mez protection. How you get that is up to you. Easiest is P2W def amplifier, but if you don't want a temp power then I really like cycling rune of protection and melee hybrid. It gives you a solid 85%+ uptime for mez and boast solid resistances/regen. A huge boon for poison. The difference (for me) between solo no insp/temp/lore MoITF being very easy, or being borderline impossible. On that note I think poison gives up too much to chase down defense. Yes it is easy to softcap s/l with scorp, but then you give up either soul drain (omg) or dominate/char (very heavy hitter). If you can get the defender ATO's into good proc powers then they are quite impressive at covering chip damage, but less so in repairing big spikes. So they work pretty well on a resistance basis, especially paired with the solid -damage debuffs that poison puts out. So ime I found more success with ensuring i have good mez protection and a solid resistance base. That isn't to say you forgo defense, you should still hit around 20% incidentally.
