Hi all, 

 

Just wanted to get some feedback on an ice/energy dom i'm thinking of making. Doesn't seem to be a common combo. Not married to the ice mastery but it seems to work thematically and practically on paper.

Any help is appreciated.

1. I don't think you need Ice Storm, but YMMV. I'd rather see it be Hoarfrost if anything.

2. Don't typically proc-out ST Holds on Dom. If you put Ascendancy there tho you get pretty frequent +dmg from the proc tho (vs glacier)

Cheers for your thoughts and tweaks mate! I was starting to think that the ratio of views to replies was an indication that this combo was not worth it 😛. I'm aware that Ice/ needs some love but I'll definitely give it the old college try. 

 

Ice Storm I like simply to add an AOE in there as /Energy severely lacks that sort of attack *shrugs*. It's up every 30 seconds so hopefully will get some mileage at least while soloing. However I do see the reasoning behind Hoarfrost.

 

The proc'd out hold I was unsure of as I've never tried it before. You make a good point though as /Energy has quite a nice ST rotation as is on top of the better chance to proc the Ascendency piece.

I think it'll work out fine; I don't think however that you should go agility. You'll still be S/L capped without it-- your endurance will be a pain and totally reliant on Ageless. You'll be reliant on anyways, but Cardiac (or Vigor radial, I guess) would make it much more playable.

 

The problem for me with Ice/ is Arctic Fog takes up so much endurance that it limits what else you can do. I personally solved that with my Ice by going /Psi.

 

I don't use Agility much anymore. Even a hasten that's slightly below perma will still give perma dom.

You make a solid point...don’t know why I didn’t think of /Psi. I don’t like to be reliable on my destiny but it’s always a welcomed boost to a build. Hmm might have to tinker with a /Psi build now to compare cheers Kira 😛

Welcome to the latest episode of "Ice Control is hard to build for," starring you. 🙂

 

I had to move the pieces around a few times until I came up with something I felt would optimize this combo. There are some hard decisions to make here.

 

Ultimately I felt that Unleash Potential was costing the build too much. It can't be perma'ed and effectively its no different from Purple inspirations. It made more sense, to me, to jettison it and try to get Defense to a couple of positions into the 32.5% range or higher. That way one small purple (+12.5%) will soft cap you. 

 

You'll notice I made the difficult decision to move the Chance for +Damage proc from Glacier to Whirling Hands. You lose some Defense from this (+5 Ranged defense, ouch) but the damage proc is much more likely to go off. 

 

Note I also swapped the Ice APP for the Leviathan power pool. Here you'll still get Hibernate, but get a S/L resist armor instead of a Defense armor. Water Spout is a power I slept on for a long time without realizing how effective it is. It's especially great for adding safety. You could swap this back if you wanted.

 

Power Push has 100% chance to knockback. Converted to knockdown, this power can create an attack cycle bosses can't escape. You can drop the KD to KB IO if you want, if you consistently plan to use Frostbite first.

 

For the Alpha slot, I swapped to Intuition Paragon Radial, which provides: Hold duration (block of ice and glacier), Defense debuff (Water Spout), Range (all powers), Slow Movement (Arctic Air mainly), ToHit Debuff (not really relevant here) and Damage (most assault powers).

Ice/Ice/(Ice or Psi) & Grav/Energy/Soul are two of my mains so I just put the two together and seeing what happens. I usually avoid Frostbite & Jack Frost however these are all the Energy attacks I take. Leadership and 6-slotting the Psi powers may not be optimal. Try the ATO set with +Dmg proc in Arctic Air, you don't have to think about it and it reduces the endurance cost more than CC. Make sure to always pop off Power Boost before Indomitable Will and Vengeance (may get patched out) and Mids shouldn't boost Mind Link % with it active but it does. This is built to keep you more sturdy and not necessarily the best at damage. For example Frostbite is slotted with a damage set but we are going for the immob proc, FC res, FCAoE Def and end reduction..

 

Curious to see what your defense gets to with Power Boost in game, I don't believe it's accurate here.

 

I also really adore Ice and Soul Mastery

Since you mentioned Ice/Psi as an alt, I happen to a have a build for that for comparison. This one uses the Ice APP instead of Leviathan, but they are somewhat interchangeable. 

 

What's different about /Psi is we can assume Drain Psyche is supplying the Endurance. So, this would be paired with Destiny: Barrier, which at T4 keeps you capped to Ranged at all times. Meanwhile, S/L defense is always capped.

Cheers for that! I'll have a thorough look when I'm home (I'm a shift worker). Also thank you @oedipus_tex and @Toxis for your inputs and builds! Peoples takes on the sets are quite unique and that's what I love about this game 🙂

 

One thought has come to mind during all this...and that is how set defining is Artic Air? Is it truly necessary? has anyone built an Ice/ troller or dom without it? I mean without it you could make a purely ranged build no? either use /Energy or /Fire...but then I guess the argument would be if that's the case then why not simply use Mind/. Without AA Ice/ looks similar to Earth/ just minus the versatility ie Quicksand and the AOE hold is ranged compared to PBAOE. 

I don't know I'm just spitballing and or/tired after work lol.

I feel like AA is the defining power of Ice Control and forcing ranged is going to impact the effectiveness of your Glacier in some cases (It's not hard to run into a mob though). Same with /Energy due to the nature of the Energy Focus mechanic you will want to be within melee range for Total Focus. If you want to play /Energy at ranged I would recommend Fire, Earth or Gravity control as they have ranged AoE stun powers which would help you get extra use out of Energys mechanic. Not sure how much better an inconsistent 66% base damage boost to Power Burst would be but its not hard to have in a build.

One thought has come to mind during all this...and that is how set defining is Artic Air? Is it truly necessary? has anyone built an Ice/ troller or dom without it? I mean without it you could make a purely ranged build no? either use /Energy or /Fire...but then I guess the argument would be if that's the case then why not simply use Mind/. Without AA Ice/ looks similar to Earth/ just minus the versatility ie Quicksand and the AOE hold is ranged compared to PBAOE. 

I don't know I'm just spitballing and or/tired after work lol.

In Artic Air you can put confuse prcs in it. Or partial sets to frankenslot. I would not skip AA for anything. I would skip ice slick for AA,

I'd definitely say if you don't want AA or want to play more at range, earth control would be your better alternative.  You basically get stalagmites (a ranged aoe stun) as a major control method rather than AA (along with both having knockdown patches).  A stun that also potentially helps set up /energy's special feature better (as it triggers by hitting stunned enemies).

In Arctic Air I'd slot a 6 set of the purple confuse set since that's the only confuse you get and those bonuses are yummy.  Then I'd six slot that Superior Ascendancy into your next most used power like the ST hold.  That right there will net you 20% recharge and 10% ranged defenses not to mention the other bonuses.  

 

As for Unleash Potential.  Keep it, don't let those who have no real experience using it much tell you how it is.  All told I have 70% defense enhancement slotted into that one and it nets me 21.5% defense to all, using power boost nets me another half of that value.  So this one power nets you 32% defense to everything for a full minute.  With how much recharge doms aim for mine is up for a minute and down for like 1:20 to which I'll just cycle Barrier.  I'd much rather have a power like UP that nets me 32% defense max than a power like CJ that only nets me 3%.  

 

With all the internal defense bonuses available I'm pretty much walking around defense capped at all times.  If you'd like to see first hand how it plays I'll be more than happy to show you.

This is very much true but luckily the confuse once enhanced with Dom it's on point. When the proc goes off it's even better. Especially when fighting an AV.

Sorry I'm not completely following. Did you mean Power Up, which enhances its duration? Domination doesn't enhance Arctic Air (tho it does protect it from being detoggled).

I am keen to see how it plays. Am on indomitable but whatever works.

 

But it seems the general consensus is that AA is a must have, that’s fair enough I just thought I’d throw it out to the group 🙂

Well I'm not Ice control but I have Energy Assault and most of what else your first build looked like as far as powers.  I'm on excelsior if you want to check out how my dom plays.

I'm liking it a lot...it tickles my scrapper style gameplay as I already have a pure ranged permadom. Apart from /Earth Assault, IMO /Energy is the primo melee set...or at least it aesthetically feels so (i don't like blocks of dirt on my hands...I prefer pom poms!). I don't worry too much about the KB of the ranged attacks...they're only ST and thus nowhere near as annoying on teams...especially if you're the one who chases said KB'd enemy down just to smash their face more. Like many above have discussed, Artic Air is a must have which only bolsters the melee style gameplay, slowing enemies ability to run away from you is also quite hilarious and though the CP proc isn't what it once was...it's still very serviceable.

 

In all I would recommend this combo if you like being in the face of your enemy 🙂 and if you colour /Energy like Ice it kinda feels you're smashing people with icy fists and shooting water but YMMV!
