Make everything stop cancelling placate in PvP

Recommended Posts

Didnt find any posts addressing this, so I'll make a thread on it now. This is a bug for all intents and purposes, seeing as it nullifies an entire mechanic from use, but I'll post it here just in case.

Currently in PvP, any and all debuffs prevent placate from placating. Lingering debuffs, debuffs from pets, Lingering debuffs from pets, debuffs from an attack launched minutes before, debuff patches, even interface debuffs, meaning if you roll interface you don't get to placate, period.

In fact, here's a list of things that break placate.

  1. Summoning a pet with debuff aura
  2. Your pets attacking
  3. Your pets debuffing (aura, past attacks, etc)
  4. Attacking
  5. Having a debuff on your opponent
  6. Any additional mez (dealing damage or otherwise)
  7. Respawning

It's no wonder no one takes placate on stalkers here. Of these, condition 5 is the one that just can't keep happening. It's horrible! And only break conditions 7, 4, 2, and 3 should be off the table for removal entirely. That leaves 1 and 6 as wildcards, in my opinions.

As it stands, no pvper can make use of placate in a practical or effective manner - with one exception that requires frighteningly withholding build "optimization" and is situational to exactly one type of play for one type of function (this being support). And even that is just relying on an over potent IO. Would love to see this fixed so placate can actually be used.

Hmm, while not PvP related, I wonder if this is why Blaster's version of Smoke Flash isn't placating anything.  Smoke Flash Placates (but doesn't actually) and drops a -Res on everything affected, maybe that -Res is breaking the veil.

It's possible, although another placate that drops -res (misdirection) works fine in PvP on its own.

To add to this, placate used to put you back in to hide, so it didn't matter about the debuffs in those day. Later, they changed it from putting you in hide to putting you in to a pseudo hide...which only partially hides you but you are still visible to the players. Because of this, ANYTHING could break placate. Try placating with a Spines Stalker...tics of damage...well, there goes your placate.

If placate were to be reverted to putting you in to full hide like it used to, it would be much more useful and the bug wouldn't even matter anymore. Back then, nobody was running around with +perception or -placate, so they all came to the boards and complained about placate being over powered. Placate was nerfed (even though the Dev response to the complainers was that Stalkers were working as intended and would not be nerfed, they changed their minds when the complainers started going from complaining to outright raging) so that it no longer put you in hide and it made all of the people complaining happy. Well, now we have +perception and -placate AND the debuff bug along with damage tics interrupting placate which any one of those makes placate useless...the original nerf is no longer needed.

Make placate the way it was originally designed and the problem is solved.

Unfortunately, issues with Placate has never gained much steam with the community. I think people remember when Stalkers first came out and the hatred they got in those days still lingers in people's minds, so any time a Stalker related issue comes up, it's kind of swept under the rug, heh.

Well, most of the issues people have brought up in this thread already concern more than just stalkers, and rather the placate effect itself, so maybe this will finally get recognition.

To be clear, there's still no placate protection. Placate and taunt are the only status effects which don't have protection, only resistance.
