Nyghtmaire
Good morning/afternoon/evening - I've been going over the different threads concerning this combination, esp @Snarky's thread further down (much appreciated!). I understand the limitations, and have been playing her steadily through all 50 levels into Incarnates. Absolutely, and inexplicably, my favorite blaster combo and the first I've really invested a full build. Is there a way to squeeze more damage or effectiveness out of this build? I've gone through 7-8 different builds (and played) to refine this character, and am enjoying playing in both blapper mode and range. For example, just swapped out Nightfall to put Midnight Grasp back in - found I missed having a big melee hitter when I had the opportunity to smack someone who gets too close. Range cap and hover have been critical (as I'm sure you are all aware - forgive me, I'm slow and come from a mastermind perspective), as well as full stealth for when the situation calls for it. Also, still figuring out solid tactics so the ability to maneuver around a spawn before engaging has been very peaceful. Finding this works better for me than a previous fire APP/bonfire build. Much faster and more recharge, etc... Anyhow, would appreciate a look from better builders/players than I to see if there is another way to go about this. Thanks in advance. Question: Considering swapping OG for Death Shroud (and swapping the overwhelming force proc into DS for the KD chance -- seems more reliable against more than just minions). While a minor source of damage, either of these powers serve as limited mitigation when going in to fire off Blackstar and Soul Drain. Note - can swap between Ageless Radial, Barrier Core, and Clarion depending on need. Snarky
i appreciate new eyes on this. i am new to blasting really (Brute Playah) and am a second rate builder at best. Depending on your desires I might direct you to start picking speed runners thoughts on builds. They are experts at running to an objective and DESTROYING the area, getting the objective and moving on.
Nightmarer 2
In my humble opinion, main problems I see are: Lack of Melee resources Going for ranged def on a heavy melee secondary Overslotting some powers / underslotting others See, unfortunately, to get the most from the combo, you need to be in melee for Soul Drain and diving in / out, for me, is a waste of time, I'd personally go for S/L/Nrg cap (Scorpion Shield) to be able to stay in melee (Nrg seems to be the most common dmg at high levels). That menas your AoE will be impaired since pretty much all your AoE are cones so, it would be prolly better being in melee and moving out a bit to drop the cones then back in or just re-position yourself in melee to get the most possible targets (which you'd have to do anyway if you had taken Shadow Maul). Just my 2 cents. 1 2 Being chased by a wasp is the most complete sport practice!

Also meant I was spending more attention combining inspirations for breakfrees (or running up power picks to RoP) rather than damage. Shadow Maul seems like a trap power (though I specced out early and haven’t tried it at 50). Long root time in melee + 5 target cap on balance seems to have a challenging return on slot investment. Seriously, thank you again. Building this AT presents many opportunities for meaningful choices. The more I consider your suggestions, the more I’m drawn to throwing together a second melee-centric build on test to compare. 1 The Splintered Soul Project: (Nyght****) 21 and counting (18 max). Uun
Rather than slotting Tenebrous Tentacles for damage, recommend slotting procs (it takes a lot). Touch of the Beyond is a debuff, mezz and sustain power. The +recovery and +regen have a 2 minute duration and don't stack. Slotting an endmod set with a lot of recharge isn't doing much for you, since the base recovery buff is plenty. I'd be inclined to slot an accurate tohit debuff set like Cloud Senses and add 1-2 endmod or heal IOs if needed. Tactics already provides +perception, so I think the Rectified Reticle proc is redundant. Plus you need endred in Tactics if you plan on running it (the proc needs the power to be running). I would enhance resist and endred in Dark Embrace so you can run it. It's a good armor. Tenebrous Tentacles and Soul Tentacles are the same power. Not sure why you have both. 1 Uuniverse

Usually, dark power have many mitigation layers, in this case, Oppressive Gloom, the -To Hit from Dark Attacks and Umbral Torrent are your main active mitigators together with your defenses. If I had to roll one myself, I'd prolly do something like this, leving Shadow Maul out and not the Nrg Def I wanted but plenty of mitigation to add to the S/L Def: This Hero build was built using Mids Reborn 3.0.6.0https://github.com/LoadedCamel/MidsReborn Click this DataLink to open the build! Frozen Burn
I have a Dark/Dark/Soul blaster as well and just love it. I like moving in and out of melee as necessary as it keeps things from getting monotonous and boring. My build is below. While not capped DEF or RES, it is highly survivable and she only dies if I'm not paying attention to what I'm doing. Using Opp Gloom and Dark Pit are huge damage mitigators. I also have Mystic Flight so I can port into the middle of mobs for shock and awe with Soul Drain, PBAOES, melee powers, and using some of the KD procs (also damage mitigators). Then next mob, I can also use tentacles to hold a mob from range, dark pit them, then port into middle and Opp Gloom will stun the bosses too - by then Soul Drain is recharged and lay waste again. I also have Rune of Protection for extra RES, if I need it, but rarely use it - it's more of an Oh SH*T power. There are many ways to do this and it seems like you found several. Nyghtmaire
This is all phenomenal. Thank you all very much. Lots to think about and test. PluckySidekick
Most of the advice I would give has already been shared. I will say this, depending on how you do your attack chain, you may not need the KB/KD proc in Umbral Torrent. Hitting a group with Tenebrous Tentacles first will lock them down vs. the KB in Torrent. Other than that: Have fun out there!
Tattooist
I also have a darkness themed character and I desperately needed to find a thread like this. OP is correct, this power set is fun as hell. 1 2 Server: Everlasting Character: Tattooist Super-power: Ink Manipulation
Rahabina
Darkness is probably one my favs across the board. I have a DD Tanker, Brute, Corrupter and Controller. The blaster has recently come to my attention I think I can make one pretty beefy enough. The corrupter is my newest and she is phenomenal. But I do have the worse case of altitis LOL Edited December 25, 2021 by Rahabina

I am back on a Brute now as my main. I am soloing the entire game (every contact blue/gold/red) on a Dark/Invul Brute. To me this is the most survivable character that has almost no penalties and does good damage (specifically single target, AoE is meh) I run this as a high recharge version of a Hyperstrike Invulnerability build. High recharge supercharges the synergy of Dark/Invul and brings up the big buff power to near perma. Happy Bruting!
Nyghtmaire
My blaster for which this thread initiated is one of 14 dark themed characters in an overly tangled and complicated role playing story. As a consequence towards building to theme, figuring out how to make a non-optimized pairing efficiently and enjoyably work is part of the joy (err, at least for me). A Dark/dark/soul blaster is a real conundrum. Range primary with a PBAOE tier 9; secondary that suggests melee; middle of the road damage but with some proc options. While the melee ATs have amazing tools for survival, survival tools here are proactive (basically mezs) or a smattering of -ToHit debuffs. Blackstar is the outlier here: lots of -ToHit. I’ve tried 40+ different builds, a healthy chunk of which stemmed from this and related threads. Lots of ways to play, but I’ve had the most success across a majority of enemy groups with a blended playstyle that focuses on range defense, shorter cast times, and layered mezs. For example, pairing OG with Dark Pit for hefty stuns, Soul + Tenbrous. Tentacles for immobilizing multiple bosses, etc. @Nemu has a couple great posts on target selection, movement/LOS, and other global strategies applicable to all blasters (hell, all ATs) that’s worth taking to heart. 1 The Splintered Soul Project: (Nyght****) 21 and counting (18 max). Snarky
2 minutes ago, Rahabina said: Thank you! You are welcome For my current “main” Dark/Invul Brute I am running two builds as I level. A “stealth” build with invisibility and no taunt for soloing. Then a “team” build with no stealth and the Taunt power. At 50 I will add a third build that will have Rune of Protection and possibly Unstoppable for serious Tanking. Also, over the last year, my thoughts on Touch of Fear have changed. This is a very valuable power not just for the AoE but for the crowd control. I will be looking at squeezing that onto builds where I can But this is the build I ran last year. I like a high recharge high accuracy build. A great source for all things Invulnerability is Hyperstrike. His thesis and templates on the armor set are the cornerstone of many a strong build
Bionic_Flea
I just finished theory crafting a Dark/Dark/Soul and went a slightly different direction. I decided to skip almost all of the cones and use teleport to fold critters to me for Aim+Soul Drain+Blackstar. I tossed in Burnout at the end to double that up, but I should be able to do that combo every 45 seconds or so without Burnout or the FF +Recharge Proc. The defense/resist numbers are a little lower than I like, but I think with the -tohit in everything, heal in Life Drain, and Regen from Touch of the Beyond I may have enough. This looks pretty good. Dark is a surprisingly versatile powerset. You Def may be low but you've got so much damage pouring out all over, I'm unsure it's going to make that much of a difference. I also love the Fold Space strategy. Mine used Combat TP to get to other groups. You just bring them to you. Clever Flea.
Nyghtmaire
I like it! Very creative take. Observation - not a criticism - it looks like you have more recovery slotted than needed. But really, very elegant. The Splintered Soul Project: (Nyght****) 21 and counting (18 max). DSorrow: “Give a man a build export and you feed him for a day, teach him to build and he's fed for a lifetime.

It is a lot of Recovery, but that's with Touch of the Beyond up. Then again, no reason for it not to be up, other than a miss or forgetfulness. I started leveling a Psi/Shield scrapper. But this Darkx3 should be my next project.
