Edit: Minor Tweaks to slotting.

Hello Scrappers! I haven't touched a scrapper build in a while, and would love to plug into the wisdom of the community regarding this combo.

A few questions I have asked myself in making this build:

  • What is ideal slotting for the crit ATO proc? Siphon seems the best compromise here, as Smite would be too low a proc rate, and midnight grasp is ideally the power I want to benefit from the proc.
  • How to best enhance siphon life? I have given it some heal in the mix, but am not sure if this element will matter all that much in practice. Perhaps I should pump it with more procs and/or a bit more ED.
  • Will this be a proper balance for end consumption? I'm okay with leaning a bit on Energy Drain at higher levels, but obviously that could pose an issue when exemplaring. My logic is that at lower levels Energize should keep me running lean enough for the most part. I sacrificed numina's and extra endmod in stamina in pursuit of other goals.
  • Overload is sort of a whatever pick/mule at 49. I could swap it for Shadow Meld, but don't see this as a "use often" power. My logic here is that on the rare occasion when I need the extra defensive beef, the HP pad and extra DDR from overload will hold me in there better.

Beyond that, my goals with this build were to softcap vs everything but Psi, pump S/L resist, and shore up other resists where possible. I also really like slow resist myself, and have built in near total protection.

Recharge is more of a secondary goal. Smite seems to give a little flexibility here, being an excellent attack that fills out gaps between other heavy hitters pretty reliably without doubling down on tons of recharge bonuses. I pick up the low hanging fruit here in lotgs and a couple purple/ATO sets. A little more recharge certainly wouldn't hurt, though.

What I am seeing in Mids shows higher values for Defenses/Resistances than what is shown above.

You have to delete the data folder and extract the manual update from discord for it to show properly. Without the manual update, Alphas that debuff defense will also buff defense.

Meanwhile, you can toggle off the alpha to see numbers as above.

I'm not sure what would cause difference in resist display. I can only imagine it is just more mids weirdness pre-release.

I was incorrect on the Resists showing higher. I've uninstalled Mid's (twice this week) and loaded new versions. Also manually deleted the Data folder and inserted the updated one from the ZIP archive.

But turning off Incarnates does get me to the values shown. Seems like a pretty solid build.

I am occasionally working on my DM/EA (got one character project ahead of him so he has not been getting the attention he needs). I generally do not include superiors/purples in my build plans because I am not sure I will stay focused long enough to get those taken care of, but for what it's worth, this is his tentative plan. If nothing else there mighe be something mineable from it:

I was having the same issue after extracting and reinstalling a few times myself. It finally worked when I deleted data, extracted to a different folder, then just copied the data folder over to the install directory. I don't know why this worked, but it fixed the alpha display issue. They did pop out a new manual release between last night and this morning.

I think your build is pretty solid for one that avoids purples. I'll chew on it for inspiration!

superiors/purples

One thing I noticed - you do include atos but not the superior version, as you said.

Note that all you need to upgrade them to sup  at 50 is a catalyst. No need to buy them overpriced off the ah as superior. Saves about 5 million per with current prices.

Maybe you just mean that you aren't sure if/when you'll hit 50 and have access, in which case my statement is irrelevant and you probably already know! Apologies if I am stating the obvious to you.

Thanks for the info. I do not intend to not ever have purples or upgrade ATOs but rather plan to the point indicated with the idea that once there I will figure out the next steps.

There's really no reason not to upgrade the ATOs to Superior. You'll need at most 12 catalysts to convert each of them, and they are easy enough to drop once you hit 50.

I've been playing this guy up to level 30 now, and he's finally starting to click together! What an absolute joy EA is - I'm sure any combo would coast along nicely on the strength of this alone.

From a DM perspective, I find myself liking touch of fear much more than anticipated. It's a pretty healthy aoe with fast cycle time, and the debuff is handy with a defense based set. Procced out it does good damage, and of course takes some very useful sets.

I'm still not sure what to do with Siphon Life. I need to put it through the paces at higher level to see how much difference the heal enhancement makes. I may still end up dropping the extra heal slots for more procs. It is kinda poopy that it does comparable damage to Smite with twice the cast time. Right now its primary purpose is to activate the crit strikes proc for a better attack.

So far end consumption is just fine! Energize seems to solve any issues, and of course I'll have absorption to lean on later. Would love further perspective from anyone who cares to look!

On my previous best DM character (DM/Elec brute back on live) I tended to look at Siphon Life as a damage dealing ability with a healing perk. Both the damage and healing become more useful with high global recharge.

I got my best results putting it in Midnight Grasp. I've tried all of them, but MG worked best for me.

I also slotted Siphon Life for damage. It just hit's to hard. Feels wasteful doing it as anything else. DM/EA sounds like a really good combo, so even the very small heal from Siphon will add up. DM is a pretty end friendly set too.

Interesting! What does your rotation look like with this setup? I would think having the crit proc affect Midnight Grasp, the hardest hitting power, would be ideal. What do you usually "spend" the proc on when it fires?

ST Rotation: MG-Sm-Snipe-Sm-SL (this is off the top of my head...I'd have to do some dummy/pylon runs to be sure).

If the build doesn't have access to a snipe at the time (exemping sometimes) then I just use SL.

The crit proc duration is 3.25s (I think?) so I can just use Snipe-SL when it procs some times. Snipe is a 1.33 fast-cast activation time. You can do Snipe-Sm but the total cast time with the two is 3.21, but latency effs that up.

You can actually get decent AOE out of DM with Ball Lightening and a procced ToF. Combined with Dark Consumption being slotted for damage, it isn't TO bad.

duration

Got it! I hadn't really considered that it had a duration, rather than being consumed upon next attack. That makes way more sense. In that case, it is all about damage dealt in the buff window rather than the one big spender.

I'll play around with placement once I have the snipe and see what flows best, but your insight has been very helpful.

Regarding Mids, the latest version I downloaded a few days ago was incorrectly boosting defense when musculature is turned on. Turn it off to see true def numbers.

You should be fine on endurance as long as you have energize. That should be on auto, and you have energy drain as backup which you will use once in a while.

I'd try to fit in shadow meld for some extra buffer and against Psi heavy factions. It's a better pick than Overload. I also try to fit in proc monster soul storm so I have 2 range attacks.

I tend to go Maneuvers/Tactics on my EA builds because I hate blind and I hate missing. EA is better at end management so it can handle the toggles.

Having played a lot of melee blasters, I don't put that much emphasis on resists.

This is based off my DB/EA build, it focuses on the typical attributes that proc builds need: Recharge and Acc. Fortunately EA has endurance sustain covered.

Weave is a later pick because the -to hit from DM should compensate for the last 2% defense for most typed defenses, and with energize and siphon life this build should not have ANY problems with exemped content even when not at softcap.

The lower overall resists should not be an issue on teams either. If you are building to solo max diff ITFs or dedicate this build to do Relentless Aeons and such then I can see the desire to pump those up.

Level 50 Fire/Elec/Mace Blaster

@Nemu, thank you for taking the time to assemble an alternative perspective!

The mids issue you describe was fixed in a recent update, fortunately. Even after applying the update, I was still having the error initially. I had to delete my data folder, then just copy over the data folder from the newest zip instead. Not sure why that made a difference vs extract/replace, but now my def debuff Alphas (musculature radial included) are no longer erroneously buffing defense.

This is definitely a very different take on the build - much more geared towards offense, which I like. However, for my Scrappers I do prefer a more dumbfire playstyle, and am enjoying the higher resist layer. Otherwise I'd just roll another blaster. Granted, why wouldn't I just make another blaster anyhow? They're amazing. 😄 Still, I think there are lessons to take away from your build for sure.

Very fair point RE Shadow Meld and psi damage. It will still give extra def pad for cascades, and provide more general utility against psi attackers. I'll switch out overload. I share your hatred of blinds. To pick up man/tactics, I'd have to kill CJ and evasive. Not a bad trade, as evasive is just a mule really, and the defense with maneuvers is a wash. I would have to retool slotting to make up for the lost mule. I'll play with it and see.

Update: I did actually work tactics and maneuvers in, dropping CJ and evasive as mentioned. I scrounged the slot from Miracle, which I might regret when exemping. We'll see how this runs when I'm up there - I don't want to be too reliant on energy drain and get caught spending half my time in its animation cycle, or be catching wind single target. The upsides are that Maneuvers provides a hair more defense total, and tactics is much more useful than evasive overall.

One new question this brings up - where to slot gaussian proc? I have it in soul drain, which is great when a crowd is about, but perhaps tactics would be better overall? It has great uptime on teams when in tactics.

I went looking if I could improve anything but nothing I could see. Build's chef's kiss even if I wouldn't dedicate so many slots to psi resist. But it's not a wrong approach, simply a different one than mine.

For your late question keep it in Soul Drain IMO. Better have that boost when you are ready to unleash hell in a few seconds like the initial two AoEs after having Soul Drained.

Thank you kindly, Sovera!

There are certainly many ways to approach priorities here. May I ask broadly where you might focus differently if you started ground-up on this combo? I don't feel like I really sacrificed anything by adding the Psi resists. I'm not really sure what else those slots would go towards, as my attacks are maxed out, and sets are mostly focused on offensive potential/procs.

I feel like the only big fundamental change that might be worth pursuit in other universes would be more of an overall global recharge focus for ideal rotations. This build does just sort of pick them up where convenient.

I tried, but the gains were insignificant. You got it perfectly balanced. In the end I would only trade 25%-ish psi resist for 5-7% E/N resistance.
