Build help: Elric of Melniboné - can Broadsword / DM be made work at 50+

Recommended Posts

Posted

I am trying to build an scraper to fit the Elric of Melniboné concept.  For those who have not read the books, he is a half crazy wizarding who  uses  broadsword and has a connection with demons.  So, BS/DM seems like an obvious combination, but I am not able to find any builds for that and see a lot of negative comments about BS as a primary for scrapers on the forums.

Assuming cost of the build is not a major constraint (I have a very strong farmer who can fund this), can someone please help me with a final build for this combo or just tell me "don't waste your time"?

You're building for concept and not utility.  Thus anything you want to do is going to be fine in the long run.  If you're building for utility and other game play goals, then you may want to make other considerations.

I’m thinking katana might suit theme better, all things being equal. Elric read faster to me somehow in his diffidence. Also a classic scrapper pairing with similar mechanics to BS albeit faster activation times.

I can definitely vouch for BS being very viable to 50.

This is my current BS/SD scrapper's build.

I get very good results ST or AOE with this (same as my WM/SD actually...and for those that don't know me, yes I know wtf I'm doing), and honestly, I only went Shields because of the aesthetic. Shields doesn't add a ton of reliable AOE. Fun AOE when it's off cooldown for darn sure, but not reliable.

Since you are looking more at concept, @Sanguinesun does make some good points, but dismissing BS entirely for utility definitely doesn't need to be considered. No, BS isn't the best performer, but it looks cool, feels chonky, and does good damage and debuffs.  But you can get a lot of utility with BS and still match your concept. Katana IS a better set performance wise, but it for sure feels different enough from BS.

What is DM in this question? I only know of DM as Dark Melee and that set is definitely lagging...

If someone tells you that you're wasting your time with BS they are wrong.

*the dude that created that character is named MoorCOCK? That's amazing.

You are right, and there us a broadsword graphic available for Katana.  Thanks.  Katana / DM it is!

In regards to what I meant, the viability of BS diminishes depending on the play goals.  As an example, while it may be possible, you do not necessarily see many ITF 4 star hardmode BS scrappers as an extreme example. 😛

As for the book series author, you can read up on him: Michael Moorcock - Wikipedia

I would suggest a Dark Armor/Titan Weapon Tank.

Why a tank instead of a scrapper? More "magical" protection.

Elric often summons elementals for protection.

If someone posts a reply quoting me and I don't reply, they may be on ignore.

(It seems I'm involved with so much at this point that I may not be able to easily retrieve access to all the notifications)

Some players know that I have them on ignore and are likely to make posts knowing that is the case.

But the fact that I have them on ignore won't stop some of them from bullying and harassing people, because some of them love to do it. There is a group that have banded together to target forum posters they don't like. They think that this behavior is acceptable.

Ignore (in the forums) and /ignore (in-game) are tools to improve your gaming experience. Don't feel bad about using them.

Well Dark Armor is a great resistance based set, I do have to agree with the sentiment that dark armor would work better as a tanker or brute due to the resistance hardcaps being 90% as opposed to the scrapper's resistance hardcaps being 75%. That said Dark Armor using Oppressive Gloom and CoF paired with Dark Regen will likely keep you on your feet.

As Dark Armor's heal is important, I'd suggest building in some degree of slow resistance, and some passive end recovery/end discount while chasing up your resistances. I'd probably also use melee core, barrier, and rune on rotation to ensure your resistances are capped.

Broadsword is decent enough and has some decent hitting powers, katana flows pretty well, and titan weapons is pretty great once you get the momentum mechanic down. I have experience with all three (including a DA/Katana tanker).

I also play DA as a scrapper with a RM/DA, and well fun, it's not as survivable by any means as a tanker or brute. However I'm not familiar with the base character.

Posted

I would say Elrik is a BS/Willpower Brute. But you could go Scrapper also.

He needed drugs to survive until he gets Stormbringer. Stormbringer provides him with the health he needs to live, hence Willpower. It makes him stronger as it steals souls, hence the Brute.

You can take the Sorcery pool for the theme and take Rune of Protection which will work well with WP.

From the epic pool you could take one like Soul Mastery and pick summon Widow and have that as your Demon.

This would keep the theme and be quite effective.

Love theme builds!

Broad Sword remains one of my favorite sets, maybe from nostalgia.  Paired with Dark Armor, you are going to have to focus your build around endurance management, which actually fits in nicely with the Elric concept since he frequently tired.  One thing to keep in mind is whether you want your character to be wielding with one hand (BS) or two hands (Katana).

Who run Bartertown?

Elric would not be Elric without Stormbringer so either Broad Sword or Titan Weapons.

There's a two handed broadsword model available for Katana as well. It actually looks really good with the animations.

Yes, you changed my mind. Katana is the best choice.  And they're two handed. I don't know why in my mind Broad Sword meant bigger = two handed but no. Also Titan Weapons are too big in my opinion in this case 😛
