change /macro default from gray to other color

/macro will give you a generic GRAY button with two or three letters.  IS there a way to get a different color generic macro? for example, a blue button with the letter FA in them? Thanks/

The texture name is Macro_Button_01. If you can find someone willing to do a custom texture for it (or are willing to learn how yourself), you could theoretically replace that standard grey button with a button that is a color of your choosing.

 

Other than that, I don't know of a way to change the color of the generic macro button.

several creators have made mods to colour other buttons or retexture them so I presume it's not a thing of impossibility

This. There are thousands of power icons, many in matching sets — same design, five or six or ten colors. And when you get to the rare powersets, there are some very unusual designs as well. MUCH nicer than any plain icon with a couple of letters on it. 🙂
