Scarlet Shocker
I noticed they spawned after a hami raid the other day and people seemed to delight in killing them but what do they do and why should we care? There's a fine line between a numerator and a denominator but only a fraction of people understand that.
Hedgefund
The main reason you should care is that Hami will not respawn if buds exist in the zone. Also there's a badge - https://homecoming.wiki/wiki/Buddy_Badge

Also there's a badge - https://homecoming.wiki/wiki/Buddy_Badge There is code that will clean them up eventually, but since at least on Everlasting, Hamis get done two in a row, the cleanup code wouldn't run before wanting to spawn the second Hami. And they're EBs, so a little extra XP and other drops. Heck, for my chars that hang out in the Hive, that's the source of Catalysts often enough. SeraphimKensai
Historically, killing buds is how you got HO's. You killed Hamidon and he would spawn a bud in zone for every player in zone. The issue was is that some people would kill more than one and would get multiple HO's while someone would lose out. That was changed to make you get a HO from doing damage to Hamidon directly. That ensured everyone was able to get one, but it didn't stop people from leeching (getting a hit in and then not otherwise help the league). Today they simply provide a badge, and act as a gatekeeper to limit how often Hami is killed as you have to clear all the buds, and then a random number of DE monsters before Hami pops again. Scarlet Shocker
Ah thanks! Good answers folks, thanks for your input. There's a fine line between a numerator and a denominator but only a fraction of people understand that.

After five DE monsters, 5% chance of a pop until 50 are defeated, then Hami will just pop. (which works out to 1 out of 10 runs, you'll do 50 . 9.94%)
