Stuttering, freezing and rubberbanding, OH MY!

Recommended Posts

So, lately I've been having NOTHING but trouble trying to play the game.  I've made a video to show you some of what's going on.

I'm not as computer savvy as some, so I have no idea what's causing it.  My PC is capable of, and DOES run much newer games (Star Citizen, Red Dead Redemption 2, etc.) at MAXIMUM settings, with no trouble... so I can't fathom why it can't seem to handle City of Heroes.

Any thoughts?

I call them "micro stutters" and I get them constantly.  I assume it because the client is reading something related to FX for powers for other people or me from the drive and it does not like something.  I have found recently that when I play one of my tankers the client freezes, will not CTD and I have tab into Task Manager a few times to kill it.  I looked in the Client logs and found this to be a problem:

That's been a problem for years and most of have that error message pop up regularly. The devs keep trying to fix it but it's resistant to everything they try.

A couple of things we recommend.

Reboot your router. Sometimes it gets stuck.

Open the laumcher and click the three dots under Homecoming. Click verify. Then click the dots again and settings, then in settings click the reset graphics on next run

When you open the game the screen will open in a small box. Click settings and put the graphics to borderless and not windowed.

Hopefully that helps.

Ok, I'm actually glad to hear it's a problem others have.  It tells me it's not my system (necessarily).

I'll keep trying to work it out, if I discover a magic fix, I'll be sure to post it here!

Well I had thought it might be related to some mods for the powers sounds.  I removed most of the mods those seem likely related to such powers and will see if it continues.  If this is a built original FX issue then yah..I hope they can squash it one day.  The micro stuttering is super annoying. As for the client crashing...it never happened before I made the Fire Tanker.  So if it is that toon and FX for it, I guess I will be playing that one sparingly and only for AEs and solo play.  Hate to crash like that during a raid/mission.

Got this one today as well during Zone Event Hamidon's Seed.  Even after removing the mods for the Blazing Aura per above the error still occurs and on characters that don't use it.  So it does seem to be erroring whether it's reading for my toon or someone else's and it's core file:

OK, I"M NOT CRAZY...thank you.  I have been having this same problem since the new version that came out after the annoncement a couple of months ago.  I have done everything under the sun, all the things you do when you think it is your system not jiving with an update.  I have driven myself nuts.  I ask if others are having the problem and they are not.  I get a glitch in the matrix thinking its too many particle effects, but of course I have some rig that should cruise thru a 20 year old game.  I understand that means nothing and may actually make things worse as the game wasn't written for the types of PCs we have now.

I am thankful to hear its not just me.  That doesn't mean I will keep tweaking but it does mean I'm not the only one with the "micro stutters"

I tried this, it seems to have relieved the problem, at least for now.

My internet is going via wifi to my landlords connection.    Usually, it's fine, but when I first moved here, everything except for CoX seemed to work well.  Turns out my router was having some issues and once I replaced it, it cleared up.   I think CoX is a little more sensitive to bad internet, probably just that it was designed with a slower connection speed in mind.

You can actually get a better connection to wi-fi if your 10’ from the router then if the router is sitting on top of your desk 2’ from your computer. If the router is close to your computer try moving it a bit farther away.

If the router is only 10' away, they might as well use an ethernet cable.

Well, the last few days, it's back to the nonsense.  The game has become just unplayable.

I've tried the fix mentioned above, I've tried verifying everything, I've updated all the drivers, shut down all the background stuff including antivirus... I'm getting close to uninstalling and reinstalling fresh, but I'm reluctant to do that lest I lose all my settings and stuff.  I'm quite at a loss.

That honestly looks like network connection issues.  Have you tried running with netgraph on?   Type "/netgraph 1" (no quotes)  to show the network connection in the bottom right of the screen. Look for red bars.  That will is times that the network is performing poorly from the game's point of view.  Type "/netgraph 0" to turn it off again.

I meant to mention that seeing a bunch of red bars or even a lot of yellow won't solve the issue, but it will at least indicate that there is a network problem somewhere. If that is the case, then that gives us something to try to chase down.

So I ran netgraph, but there's nothing in red, just a line of green with tiny spikes, like grass.  Now and again, corresponding with the numerous freezes, there will be a tall green line, wider when the freeze is longer.  Nothing in red or yellow, all green.

Alas, I've no idea what any of it means.

from the wiki:

Interpreting the netgraph:

Spike shape: The height of the bar representing server ping time in milliseconds. Short is good, long is bad.

Green bars represent received packets.

Short = normal/good

Long = low bandwidth.

Yellow bars represent retransmitted packets.

Short = ISP/Router issues

Red bars represent dropped packets

Short = ISP/Router issues

Blocks of Red = Interrupted communications

So based on your description of the /netgraph results it seems you are experiencing periodic loss of bandwidth. It isn't dropped packets, or a loss of connection. If you are on WiFi, I would try switching to a wired connection and see if that helps. Check and make sure that any wired connections are in good condition and securely connected. If you have your own Router, you could temporarily bypass it and plug directly into the ISPs modem/router. If none of these seem to help, I would request, especially if it is not fairly new, a replacement modem from your Provider, most providers will not charge anything for this, and many times an older modem may have issues interacting with newer equipment on their network.

Something I just found and search doesn't show up any results:

CoH seems to use MTU size = 548 as default. With that setting I got a lot of red bars and lost/duplicate packages on netgraph.

Correct seeting for my MTU size seems to be 1492. You can add '-mtu 1492' to command line paramaters. WIth that I have much less lost/duplicate packages.

To find your MTU size see here:

https://kb.netgear.com/19863/Ping-Test-to-determine-Optimal-MTU-Size-on-Router

Question is, why is MTU 548 hard coded?

I would say the issue is not related to the game install as the /netgraph results indicate you are experiencing periodic drops in bandwidth. It could be a router or modem issue or connectivity between your PC and the network. I included some suggestions in my previous post, were able to try any of those?

Routers provided by an ISP are typically the cheapest PoS they can get, it's usually best to get your own..

Also, when I have issues like this I'll hard reset my router be unplugging the power for 30 seconds or holding in the reset button for 15s.

I have found that using '/noparticles 1' during really heavy gfx loads like the SNS helps.

Dislike certain sounds? Silence/Modify specific sounds. Looking for modified whole powerset sfx?
