For most folks, the incentive to team up is simply more xp, and maybe a few jokes. And possibly a nice story to tell here when things go awry or fairly well.

But for some of us - we want merits. I just joined a pug, the team lead sent a tell politely asking, so I agreed. It was fairly normal, although why a level 2 is hanging out in Night Ward...well, that's not my business. But after a team wipe...well, that's another rant, I guess. Anyways, where's my merits for helping this person complete their story arc? I don't get any. So...why would I risk out-leveling my own arcs to help someone else get through their stuff? Not to mention, I'm likely going to end up repeating the same content with my own character. Shouldn't there be something for each player? The XP isn't sufficient motivation. Maybe I need an attitude adjustment. But it would be nice if, instead of a lump sum at the end of each arc, the merits were divided by the missions and awarded separately for each mission.

You might as well complain about the people who keep posting location coordinates in chat without bothering to include a zone -- Jurassik may spawn only in Crey's Folly, but "Babbage [340.5 -145.2 2341.6] could be either Skyway City or Boomtown (or the end of a Kronos swarm in Talos), and seeing just "Kronos [3434.2 144.7 1124.7]" tells you nothing about where to go. People will always look for shortcuts to get what they want for the least effort possible -- the continued LFG messages asking for farms they can join is proof. You just have to take a little care with what you accept, and learn from your mistakes. If you dislike assisting someone else complete their goals at a disadvantage to yourself, stop doing it.

If you're worried about outleveling content, turn off your XP.  If you're running content just for merits, then stick to Apex/Tin Mage runs - better XP & merits/hr than regular missions.  If you think that you should have gotten the merits, then maybe submit a support ticket or file a bug report?

Yea, Zero-summing outlook "what's in it for me?" is never going to motivate you in a game where it's easy to make any character self-sufficient by abusing carefully selecting set bonuses. At some point, you either decide to occasionally help someone out for warm fuzzy feelings, or you don't. And hey, either option is entirely up to you. Not everything can or should have a mercenary reward.

If you have access to the same contact as the team leader, you can enable Collaborative Missions (Options/General/Team). This allows you to complete the missions/arc for your contact at the same time (you still have to call the contact after each mission completion) and receive the merit bonus at the end. (It's a clumsy system and doesn't work if you don't have the contact.)

It is also clunky if the contact gives the story arc out in a random order (like Stephanie Peebles) because if your missions don’t line up, your arc won’t progress.

What this team needs is more Defenders

If you and the team leader are collaborating though, then it is a simple matter of waiting for the team member to abandon mission until the contact gives the correct mission to have the same mission as the team leader.

Funny this topic came up.

While I was downloading the Oblivion remaster, I decided to pop over to CoH on my cold/ice. I joined a redside tip team, which was alright. I only got a few notches on my vill side alignment meter, no merits.

Got a vet level though which was ok I guess. Point being, while I'm definitely not against merits for collaborative completion of arcs, sometimes I personally team if I'm well and truly bored while waiting for other games to download on my consoles.

Teaming has its' incentive; Pass time and not be horribly bored while doing so(probably. Some content in this game is just straight up boring)

Alignment tip missions don't give merits. Only the morality mission to change/confirm alignment does.

Yep, I’m aware. Even still, I didn’t care about merits as they weren’t at the amount of tips necessary for a morality mish.

Just extremely bored while oblivion downloaded.
