Hello all,

Like the title says, I'm curious about what AT would be good for duoing TF's with my daughter on. She's only 8 and still trying to learn the ropes of the game, so I haven't wanted to put her on teams yet. So far she's just been picking power combos that sound good to her and street sweeping. Every once in a while we do missions together.

I suspect she'll want to use one of her masterminds to do this with, so I am curious what would best complement that for duoing TFs. Looking to start with Posi 1 and see how we do and maybe go from there. No rush on anything since my play time is limited due to my job anyway.

I know I want to take something high level to exemp down so that way at least one of us is somewhat powered, including having things like envenomed daggers, a signature summons, etc. to help DPS down AVs. I have several 50s, but they're mostly MMs and Controllers and I'm not sure if one of those would be the best pairing option for exemping down. I feel like I need to go more of the scrapper or brute route, but wanted to see what other folks who have experience doing this sort of thing think. And what powersets might be good/best for doing this sort of thing. The MM I suspect my daughter will choose is probably her Thugs/FF if that makes a difference.

Thank you!

I primarily play on Everlasting, but you may occasionally find me on Indom. 🙂

Notable Characters: Apocolyptica - Demons/Storm MM; Lurking Monster - Human-Form WS; Environmentabot - Bots/Nature MM; Miss Fade - Ill/Traps Controller; Sister Apocalypse - Beast/Dark MM; Dr. Elaina Wrath - Plant/Rad Controller (Join the House of Wrath, and spread the word of science!); Ruff Ruff Boom - AR/Devices Blaster

If she's bringing a Thugs/FF and you want a melee toon to complement it, then a Brute with a decent Taunt Aura plus Resistance based mitigation would probably be a good idea. Possibly Radiation Armor given that Ground Zero will help keep her and her pets alive (and RT's -Regen Debuff will help a smidge vs AVs). Primary doesn't really matter but either Claws or Battleaxe would probably get my vote - both are decent at AoE and can keep multiple FF Procs ticking over.

Alternatively, just bring a Marine toon. Controller or MM doesn't really matter.

Another thugs mastermind would also work well actually.  Pretty sure thug leadership powers stack on other thugs, even from different owners, so when you get two on a team it should get pretty crazy.  Pair it with something that gives some resistance like marine as suggested.

OP, I know you're looking for a real answer but the truth is it doesn't matter, it just doesn't.  IMO there are only 3 sub 50 tfs that can't be duod with any two characters off the shelf with SO builds - Katie, Morty and Sutter.  For everything else, a nice insp loadout and a Shivan as backup (usually not needed) will get it done, full stop.  So whatever your daughter will most enjoy.

Thank you to those who have responded.

@Maelwys I wasn't sure if bringing another support toon would give us enough DPS for AVs, but I forgot how monstrous Marine can make damage output. I might think about that angle since I don't have many higher level melee toons as melee is not usually my favorite thing to play, but I wasn't sure if having a meat shield would make things smoother.

@Hedgefund2 It's possible it may not matter, but I wasn't sure if there might be something that can make the process smoother given that she's new and I'm not like a min/max uber leet player or anything. I don't really make builds and play pretty casually, but want to make sure the experience of trying to duo is not super frustrating since there will likely be times where I have to get up to assist her with something.

@Riverdusk I do believe the thug leaderships stack with other thugs, and that could be something to look into as well. Though I've not done as many thugs toons since they didn't get done in the MM revamp a while back, lol.

2 masterminds should make it easy, particularly when you get all your pets up and running by the early 20s. You can also leave your MM in bodyguard (and maybe follow daughter's char) and help your daughter with anything she might need. I'd second marine as a secondary as it both contributes to damage with Shifting Tides and proc'd out Whitecap and makes masterminds extremely tanky with a combination of Toroidal, Reef, and PotD.

For bringing down AVs faster, I think most MM primaries will work fine. Demons has additional -res from the pets and MM attacks, with robots you can get additonal -regen (although enemies will attempt to run out of the fire patches), and Mercs can offer -res with Achilles' proc and high dmg.

You don't have to convince me twice to roll another MM! 😂 If my favorite AT is down to duo TFs, then I think I will level up my little baby Demons/Marine MM I have since I like your suggestion of leveraging the debuffs from the attacks (and don't feel like dealing with runners from Bots patches).

I was thinking MM's weren't really great for exemping, but maybe that's wrong or outdated thinking. I appreciate your feedback. 🙂

The "new" levels for power picks has benefitted MMs greatly for exemping.  The max level 20 TF/SFs (Synapse, Virgil) will have all pets available, the max level 25 tfs/sfts (Penny, Silver Mantis) will have the last upgrade open.  They exemp a lot better today than before that change.

To beat the "well akshully..." crew, exemping to 20 will give you the boss pet but only 1 of T2s, so you'll have 5 pets total.

I would suggest a controller, dominator or defender/corruptor. MM's are fun and actually easy once your daughter gets the hang of it. Just let the pets do most of the work. That said, you'll want to ensure her pets are always topped up on health and various buffs. She'll have enough def with FF, hence a tank is not as needed. CC and buffs/debuffs will support her better. then with doms, fenders and trollers, you can sneak in a few pot shots to help kill more stubborn foes.

I'm going to try a demons/marine MM, and if that doesn't work out, I'm leaning towards a symphony/marine controller or pyro/marine controller. 🙂

Your Daughter's 8. She probably won't remember to bubble her thugs every 4 minutes. She might be the type to stand around passively while her henchment does the work. I'd bring a support AT that can and will keep her and her thugs safe.

Let her do the work. It's more fun for her if she's the one arresting bad guys. Out of your last 3 options I'd lean Pyro/Marine, and avoid the proc meta for damage oriented controllers when you build it.

i dont recommend another mastermind. you want to bring some cc so she can have fun playing the game however she wishes.

all masterminds are very vulnerable to many of the autohit, untyped damage aoe's at all level ranges especially as an 8 year old may not necessary remain in bodyguard mode all the time.

so anything that can control the crowd whether through tanking, extreme dps or actual controls is best. bonus if you can provide any healing.

@Nemu I am not skilled at building or doing proc builds, so avoiding a proc build shouldn't be an issue, lol.

@Dixa This is something I was wondering too and was surprised that something like a brute/tanker/scrapper was not suggested as much. I do think I'm going to swap to a controller since that seems to be so highly recommended by many people and see how pairing a Pyro/Marine with her goes.
