Upkeep was also a function of plot size: the larger the plot, the more the upkeep cost. I can't remember, but other things could have factored in too, like number of rooms, power sources, etc. Basically, the larger the base was, the more Prestige it cost per real life month in upkeep. The idea was that, with larger supergroups, this wouldn't be a big deal since more members meant more help in generating Prestige and helping with upkeep, along with building new things. The problem was that, with Prestige decreasing the amount of Influence a character made, fewer and fewer wanted to play in SG mode, especially when the economy was bolstered by the auction house. Suddenly things like HOs and IOs had a tangible Influence value, and characters who had spent their careers building Prestige were suddenly at a severe disadvantage in buying power when it came to clotting out decent enhancement sets in the end game. Eventually, the dev team decided to scrap Prestige altogether, since they could never fully squash all the issues with base raids, like ensuring that base assets that were meant to be targets during raids weren't completely blocked by builders who knew how to stack objects, for example, or that Items of Power actually granted benefits to all SG members and also disappeared after a month (if no one raided them). Without base raids, there wasn't a reason to charge SGs for upkeep on large secure rooms and plots (because secure rooms and plots were a thing and cost more Prestige to add defensive items, etc.), and without those items or upkeep, there was no real reason for Prestige anyhow. After that, PvP was strictly for PvP zones and Arenas, and bases were turned into player-made roleplaying environments. And this was even before he game originally shut down in 2012, and way before the current "I25" build.

Are skybox and sound settings persistent? Do they save to the base? It seems like I have to reset the skybox every time I enter the base.

Homecoming Server Update (May 7th): Donations
Obsidius replied to Cipher's topic in Finances & Donations
I'll help take care of next month :) -
Exactly. They're already in game, and having a combat practice room in our base would be a lot more handy than having to go to Vanguard or requiring a third party program. The hands-on feel for practicing combat and attack chains would be a nice feature to have in bases with a simple addition of combat dummies.

Exactly. SGs and SG alliances at some point or another just became a way to find easy teams and locate friends more easily, once an SG had enough Prestige to build the base they wanted and pay for its upkeep. Personally, I'm fine with bases being easily accessible, although it sort of breaks the RP (how does a brand new hero have enough prestige or infamy to build a grand manse? :P ). But still, it's a bit of work to build it out just to get power, some TP pads, and whatever beacons you want. The work is really about building the base to be functional IMPO. And people can easily RP reasons behind huge bases (rich super hero orphan, squatting in an abandoned base, etc.), so I'm fine with the system as-is. As a background, two of the main reasons bases ended up in their current state, before the game went offline the first time was 1) base raids hadn't been working for a while and the devs decided to abandon the whole idea, and 2) to give players the option of making personal bases/ player apartments using the existing system. When they did that, Prestige was more or less a deprecated currency - although I can appreciate it being used strictly as a metric so long as it doesn't deter from the fun that base builders currently enjoy.

Outstanding, and my apologies for the misunderstanding.

Should be fixed now according to today's patch notes. Might be worth checking out.

Homecoming Server Update (May 7th): Many news!

[move]I LOVE YOU 3000[/move] -
Yeah, the initial description in your other post made it sound like it just had a very long recharge time. This definitely sounds like a bug. I rescind my previous reply and apologize.
-
Sounds like the mission is bugged and the door pointer is invalid. What is the title of the mission, and who's the contact?
-
Well best of luck then :P

Working as intended. Take a look at the main power sets and these patch notes: https://docs.google.com/document/d/11cLJiSYlfueJheOumRywG8Evip2Mjmu_30Y6ePaetqY/edit#heading=h.4d34og8

My biggest issue with Prestige is that, for a long time, it halved the amount of Influence one could make when in SG mode, to help balance the game economy. However, it hampered a character's ability to earn enough Influence to afford things like IO recipes and competing in the WW market. I'd be fine with Prestige as long as it didn't do anything besides perhaps, as you say, be a measure of work towards the SG/VG, without affecting the ability to create bases or earn Influence. There are many base builders who love having free range to create whatever we like without the constraints of Prestige, especially since Base Raids aren't a thing anymore (well before the original game closed).

Agreed, but I'll recommend the mod move this request to the Base Construction subforum so more of us base builders can chime in :)

Placeable Sound FX would be nice, just as there are now placeable visual effects. Helicopter sound (helipad), street sound (near a window or door), background conversation sound (room full or people), random subway sound (a base in a sewer near the tubes), etc.

The power form Rapid Response is a temp power that can be recharged, whereas the P2W power is the old Vet Reward/ o Rewards version that has unlimited uses. Just FYI.

Anyone know if there are base window options that will let you look out into the skybox? Otherwise, what's the point of being able to select a skybox?

Homecoming Server Update (May 1st): Perfectly Balanced
Obsidius replied to Jimmy's topic in Announcements
Beggars and choosers. We're all playing this game for free thanks to the hard work of a dedicated few with the resources and guts to pull it off. If they have to increase stability for the entire server population by forcing a few people to level characters through different means, that's how we're going to have to roll unless/ until the paradigm changes. That being said, I've already outleveled some contacts due to rested Xp and server XP bonuses, but it's all low-level stuff. Still, I might be upset if I don't get to fight Dr. V along the way. But it is what it is, and it's a sight more than I had a month ago, which was no CoH whatsoever. -
And Excelsior is like the new Triumph, just go there if you want something lower key than Freed... I mean, Torchbearer :P
-
What is your most fondest or favorite memory of COH?

Drinking with Ex Libris. Ex could drink a person under the table. I remember when Ex did boiler makers with Marcian Tobay. That was fun to watch. I seriously miss Ex Libris, now going by Max Jones. He was a character, and had a good heart. Hope to see him again IRL sometime to give him a hug. -
Homecoming Server Update (May 1st): Perfectly Balanced
Obsidius replied to Jimmy's topic in Announcements
I'm willing to bet they had a lot more hardware and financial resources, and a lot of players beta testing the AE feature to determine the resources and upkeep before launching it. AE launched before the game became F2P, so everyone was paying $15/mo for play and access. Getting a few more mapservers online just for AE probably wasn't a huge issue, but it's all conjecture on my part obviously. -

Thanks Leandro for all the team's hard work. If reducing AE XP helps improve mapserver stability for all the shards, then IMPO the benefits definitely outweigh the drawbacks. Carry on and thanks for all of the team's hard work. Let me know how I can send money :P -
If you figure it out, let me know. And vice versa :)

Pretty sure that, on the old forums, there was a stickied post that acted as a global chat channel directory. That was as comprehensive as it got.
