I find that the 'character' is what makes me stick with one...meaning, the whole costume/bio/powerset/Name combo. If the whole package really fits, then I ride it much longer, I get more invested. Sometimes it takes a while to get the whole package working - I just got some of that working on the current servers for ideas I had on Live, so sometimes years. The really good 'character' ideas tend to bounce off of AT/Power Combos more than anything after I get a good Name/bio/costume going, so I get the draw to try out stuff. So for me, a fun pun name with a matching costume and silly bio are what make me settle down into an AT/Powerset and take it to 50 most of the time. Sometimes, I just like an AT/Power combo so much I then build the 'character' from it, but that seems to happen less. That's what works for me, just loving a character for the non-directly-mechanical reasons.

Will we ever see the new things that Cake is getting?

OK. So you choose to take me stating my opinion as an attack because I use blunt language. It's an opinion, of course it is subjective. You made a choice where to play, everyone does, based on what is important to you. Awesome. How is my stating my opinion, with whatever level of passion that others approve of or dislike, in anyway impactful? You stated nothing about accusing anyone of anything, you did not denigrate anyone, you are not advocating what group is 'better' in your choice. I have stated repeatedly, none of the server runners owe any of us anything. The lemmings, IMO, are the ones that are following thier 'team' blindly, continuing to promote the idea whichever server is the 'only right way', etc. I don't see you directly saying any of this, but I don't ususally bother read post histories. I get paid to solve the kind of technical problems people try to use as excuses for not collaborating COH innovations. Therefore, I know these are excuses - reasons people make to tell themsleves it's OK not to think about it anymore. I am not saying the decisions to not collaborate are immoral or evil, simply that IMO, saying the technology is the reason is just not accurate. It's a people problem. The people involved choose to do what they do. Some of the people choose to attack the other groups in an effort to tell themselves they made the right choice - thus the cognitive dissonance. I don't really care if people agree or disagree with my opinion. I love to share opinions and learn about the POV of others. I will also express myself that same way I would in person, with blunt, passionate language that attempts to get to the root issues, not just dance around them in some effort to never offend anyone, because these things happen to be important to me. The moment someone else decides to share their opinion, that's on them, I do not control other peoples (re)actions. Right now, people decide to make themselves feel better about which server they chose by denigrating other servers. I think that stinks.- 122 replies

So, because I respond with what I really think and feel, I am baiting people? Really? I think the only things preventing the sharing of changes on the these shards is Ego, Time, and Energy, not Technology. I think that the reason player groups (and sometimes server runners) choose to denigrate others is based on Ego, Tribalism, and FUD and that many are using seriously passive aggressive language to do it, many without realizing it because they are just following the herd, full-on cognitave dissonance, IMO. That's it, that's all. How am I baiting anyone by simply stating my POV. Where does all this conspiracy crap come from? I have no hidden agenda - my agenda is out in the open - if we choose to work together, we get more. And yet, by simply stating my honest POV on why we can or cannot get things proliferated between servers, it's somehow 'dark', simply because I want people to address the real problem, a people problem, not a something we can just blame on technology, I am the bad guy... As I have mentioned since these forums went live and others have agreed, none of this is anything new. Rogue servers for all games go through all of this llama drama. I would simply like it if this community lived up to it's self-imposed 'better' moniker and actually you know, worked together as a community, not tribal warfare.- 122 replies

Will we ever see the new things that Cake is getting?
jubakumbi replied to Soloshot360's topic in General Discussion
I earned the the time to play the game through work, there is nothing to earn in COH, it's just a game, I do not earn flags flipped in a DB, I play games. This is the sort of passive-aggressive attitude that, yet again, trying to imply that players who don't play the 'right way' should 'not even bother' makes ths community so much 'better'... Some people are filled with joy through the creation of things. These creative people are not worried about anything, they are expressing themselves. There is no reason to look at a hobby through the lens of time-based ROI and long term outcomes on a rogue server that could be gone tomorrow. There may not be a point to you, there is a huge point to those people that like to be creative, who have dreamed for years of adding something to this game and noe they can express that. So much "I don't want to do it, so it must not be worth doing"... Passive aggressive, tribal based, cognitive dissonance.- 122 replies

I am also talking about the sever runners. They are the ones here that invoked the no Homage rule, for example, bowing to FUD and telling people 'they are not creative enough'. The server runners that opened the i24 servers did so specifically because i25 was 'wrong', and they were way over-the-top with thier attitude. I watched the stats on about 300 players leaving HC to go there and those numbers never came back. Places like COXG are not for everyone, but certainly allow for more real freedom and creativity, even if the reality of real freedom is that you encounter things that you find distasteful, but still act like children toward other servers. So yeah, I am talking about the whole community, top to bottom, there is a ton of 'blame' to go around for the current level of disfunction and no on is immune, IMO. If these people would set aside thier Egos and hurt feelings about not being able to play on the super secret server run by the dictators they did not like or how it's so unsightly to have to see Hulk homages in Atlas, or how everyone is cheating by powerleveling, and just try and work together, we might all be enjoying the additions that have been individually added to each server, but instead, the in-fighting, back-stabbing and just plain mean trolling, sometimes of thier own players, continues. There is no one involved that I can see that does not have a portion of this blame to carry.- 122 replies

jubakumbi replied to Soloshot360's topic in General Discussion
As I stated in my last post, this is a two-way street and has been from the first time anyone mentioned creating a server separate from HC. Both sides have chips on thier shoulders, both sides think they are filled with the righteous fire of a thousands suns, whatever level of hyperbole can be named, we have seen it. I have seen people here tell each other they are playing the game wrong just because the like KB or Homages. I have seen people on Reddit attack the WHC server, just because they had the audacity to advertise. The attacks are all around, from all sides, all full of FUD and Ego. The part that makes me laugh the most is that through it all, the community still claims to be 'the best'...so hypocritical and so blind to it...- 122 replies

This is where I disagree. This community talks all the time about how much 'better' it is, then does terrible things to it's members, like telling people they are not creative enough. IMO, every thread talking about real things devolves into anger. Even a hint of an attitude in a post, here, Reddit, where ever, that dares to not fall over agreeing with everything HC based is attacked, just as rabid fans attack everything HC does based on 'history' and 'hurt feelings'. You, @Abraxus, try very hard to be very diplomatic and that's fine, great even. I always applaud your diplomatic, sunny disposition, but it is not as universal as you make it out to be IMO. I really do appreciate the way in which you try to be civil, but that attitude is far from universal in the community. I see a bunch of people that followed the 'first to market' blindly, that continue to promote the tribe they are in, only because they are in it, still trying to 'white knight' things for a company that no longer exists, to make themselves feel like they are 'playing the game right', while everyone is in the same boat, playing on rogue server that may well be gone tomorrow, interested more in who is 'right' than just allowing the game to survive for everyone. I still say there is nothing really stopping all of these group from working together than thier own Egos.- 122 replies

jubakumbi replied to Soloshot360's topic in General Discussion
Except there are players advocating for just such a situation in which there is only On Source Of Truth that have happily stated they will help burn down the other houses. To many players, as discussed here, the only way the game is even worth playing is with the largest player base possible. So, for a lot of people, I would even say most players, if there is only one legit server set, that is where they will play, period. In turn, as we all know, one group can never please everyone. I simply want a situation where 'anyone' can run a server, tweaked anyway they like, not just one group. If they have to jump through a hoop of some kind, OK, NCSoft owns the IP, that's fine, but if they let one set of server runners do this, then IMO, it should be open to anyone. But IMO, if NCSoft decides to crown only one set of servers, then it effectively kills off the rest, which stiffles the creativity and variety. Benjamin Franklin once said: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."- 122 replies

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Attributed to Edmund Burke. The only thing I want is for this supposed 'community' to pool resources and work together on both the technical and politcal aspects to keep the game running, attractive, and fun to play, rather than fighting over minutae most of them don't really understand. I realize the mini-tribes within the community are hell-bent against that happening, because people are people. Won't stop me from talking about it bluntly and openly in an effort to get more people to work together on solutions. The only reason we don't have more crossover productivity is Egos, not Technology.- 122 replies

Healthy Population is completely and totally subjective. That's the point. If it's a non-starter for some people to play on a server where they cannot get thier fix, that's fine, it's just another sub-group, why is one put above another? I realize to the masses Healthy Population means one thing and to quiet old introverts like me it means something else entirely. But we all like to play the game. As @DR_Mechano points out, it's human nature I am fighting here, but I tilt at windmills all the time, but there is simply no need to put down other servers the way players do, beyond just being mean people, IMO.- 122 replies

That's the whole friggin' point, why argue? Why not just try and work together and stop making boxes full of Us and Them? We are a community after all, right? Isn't the whole point for the game to be played, not making judgements on whose way is better?- 122 replies

There are people that play, everyday, on those servers. I think equate 'active' with 'enough people playing that I feel like I made the right choice of servers.' Not everyone thinks player population matters, planty of us love quiet servers. Most Popular does not equate to Best in my world. Watching sports is far more popular than playing COH, for example, and IMO is a terrible way to spend time. Thinking being Number 1 is all that matters is a dark rabbit hole to go down, IMO.- 122 replies

I think any attempt at any level of in-fighting and animosity between server runners is silly and shows everyone just how much the COH 'community' is willing to eat itself. I think comparing what occurs between server runners is a natural and reasonable thing for players to do. I think this idea that HC 'owns' COH at this point is perhaps the absolute worst of it. I think the continued message that HC is 'better' because of thier choices is just lemmings following the herd. I think that none of this is any different than any other rogue servers for any games, just useless llama drama. The only reason these things cannot be shared is that time and energy are a limited resource. All other reasons are just people being people, IMO. I overcome much larger technological hurdles in my day job all the time, this is not a technical problem, it's vanity and fear holding everyone back, IMO. Happy Friday!- 122 replies

A Call for a little transparency, just a touch.
jubakumbi replied to DR_Mechano's topic in General Discussion
Well, obviously, we simply see the situation through differening lenses. Hostory tells us even when NCSoft had something to gain, not simply nothing to lose, they still refued to make a deal. Only time and results will tell, which is also my point, talking in these circles has no impact on those results. As for my PoV on the players, nothing has changed since Day 4 of Live when I began playing. IMO, most of them base thier choices on emotion rather than logic and IME, emotion clouds logical thinking. We have seen posts here and elsewhere showing there are plenty that are still using emotions to make choices about how the game should/could go. Toodles. -

I think you mistake my wish to live in reality as cynicism. In reality, it's all really hilarious to me, that the people involved are even talking about being legit when this whole thing started form a massive code and consumer data breach. From my POV, NCSoft has to admit that even happened for any of this to move forward and that is serious egg-on-face for a corporate entity. From my POV, HC wants to become Paragon-reborn, and that's great and all, but just means there is another corporate entity telling us how to play. Really, that's how I see it. Thing is, it seems obvious that's what the majority of the players think they want, and I am all about everyone having fun the way they want. All I see is another Big Borther telling everyone they can't do homages, cannot get insta-50s, etc. and everyone forced to play on one set of servers, because I simply do not trust anyone involved based on available data to not come to an exclusive deal with NCSoft, if any deals are made. And really, a few of us quibbling on the forums has no impact on the growth of HC or the game, we have been quibbling over these things, be the discourse cynical or not, whoch is part of the hwole point of the thread - the players have no 'control' over what happens and many of them hate that feeling... -

jubakumbi replied to DR_Mechano's topic in General Discussion
My faith in the stability and longevity of a server group does not hinge on the activity being any more or less legit than what we have now. Perhaps I have simply had too much experience with IT, time, energy, user drama, and the place where all those things come together to think having a piece of paper making it 'OK' has any real impact on how long it will last, who will destroy everything in a fit of rage or fear, what hosting company will go out of business leaving the servers deleted, etc., etc. I have no faith in these talks everyone refers to anyway. I have been in business too long, I have seen this same line used for decades to placate groups of people, large and small. The results are what matter, IMO, and right now, we have as good a situation as we can hope for IMO - as long as no one tries to make a buck, NCSoft seems to be willing to live and let live. There are simply too many people in the COH community that cannot live with that level of uncertainty, so these types of discussins will continue to go in circles until the the people involved keel over or can no longer for whatever reason post thier thoughts, IMO. -

jubakumbi replied to DR_Mechano's topic in General Discussion
Because I don't have a hang up, I am just stating my thoughts and opinions on the situations? Why does there have to be a hang-up? Did I miss a memo? I am not against NCSoft making a statement or some other type of missive that makes things legitimate, never have been. I am an open source advocate, I would vastly prefer a situaiton in which anyone could run servers, not just HC with whatever 'deal' it makes. Like many, you seem to think the time spent playing characters is some sort of investment that needs protecting, where I just see it as free time already spent, investment has already returned it's value, the bytes on the server marking the flags that make a character can easily be changed in the database of a new server. As I have stated, for those that have the emotional outlook that the larger the group playing, the more fun to be had, any sort of legal action against the servers will be hard on them. For those that play with smaller groups of friends or solo like I do, the game will be availble to them as long as the code can be successfully deployed, there are full tutorials on making it happen. And finally, the main thing I was discussing here is simply that the servers becoming 'legit' does not, in anyway, actually make things any more or less stable than they are now. Servers can dry up and dissappear for a whole lot more RL reasons than a C&D, so people thinking HC becoming 'legit' is some nirvana of permenance would be hanging thier hats on yet another sinlge point of failure, IMO. -

I think the crackdown on homages is about as silly as it gets, I have posted plenty in that realm. HC decided to go with the fearmongers, it's thier choice to make, it's thier servers, they can do as they like. The war on the 'not creative enough' has waged for decades in MMOs, it has always raged here in like a bonfire. -
Finally joined the game - newbie needs advice
jubakumbi replied to PopZeCherry's topic in General Discussion
My advice is to just play. Try out each AT for at least a few levels. Shop around, take your time, enjoy the game itself. Find what you like, not what anyone else thinks you like or might like or might have fun with, play them all, even to just level 2 or 3. Don't worry about finding a home on a specific server, you can move anytime. And most important, have fun your way and don't let any of the various sub-groups tell you the right way to play. All ATs work, levels will come at you fast and easy, no need to think, at all, this is like other MMOs where you have to have angst over choices. Enjoy your ride. -
A Call for a little transparency, just a touch.
jubakumbi replied to DR_Mechano's topic in General Discussion
Exactly. Except not. The code is in the wild, people who want to play will be able to do so as long as the technology to run that code exists. The only difference is the glorified 'community' that comes along with it - constant C&D would make it more complex to find servers, but not really hard. For people who just want to play COH, the legal stuff will not impact them, they have the code. For people that think they need a big playerbase to be able to enjoy the game, these things are more dire in thier eyes, because for them the game is dead without more people. The video example exemplifies the entire situation IMO - try and make money, you get hit, otherwise, don't fret. So yeah, not that complex, except for the people who simply cannot stop worrying, the people who think they need a big playerbase, the people that want to control the game, the people that want the game to have rulers they can just follow without worrrying, it's all fine except for all those large groups, right? From a legal standpoint it's very simple - don't make money, keep your server. From an emotional standpoint it's incredibly complicated, we have a ton of people wired to worry, especially over the minutae and the possibility of law enforcement taking away thier freedom over playing the game, groups that think there should be Only One True Server and One True Codebase and others that want Full Hall Monitors in place to thwart the Uncreative, while many of us want the exact opposite. -
A Call for a little transparency, just a touch.
jubakumbi replied to DR_Mechano's topic in General Discussion
I don't think the cloud you refer to is any different from any of the others that have been in place for years, pirate servers still keep on rolling. IMO the reason people are riled up is simply because some poeple like to be riled up, TBH. The thought that law enforcement is going to show up at your door for playing this game is not IMO, in any way a valid, logic thought. Even if the game gets a green light, any server could go offline at any time for all kinds of reasons. Therefore, this idea of things being 'legit' for the game to 'survive' is, IMO, nothing more than people who are wired to worry, worrying, and people who like to talk, talking, in circles... -
A Call for a little transparency, just a touch.
jubakumbi replied to DR_Mechano's topic in General Discussion
It means that plenty of people still think if they play on a non-'legit' server, 'the man' will come knocking. Anything could be shutdown on a whim, COH was, afterall. Legal permission in this case is, IMO, a pretty silly thing to use as a foundation for the conclusion the game servers you choose to play upon cannot be 'shutdown on a whim'. To read some of the posts here and elsewhere about this, some people think if NCSoft says 'OK' (to whatever vague idea of 'talks' one subscribes to) that they will still be playing the game in 100 years without a worry of 'losing the work' they do on thier characters. The sheer amount of misinformaition and hype over this is staggering IMO. Sure, it would be great if there is some level of closure with NCSoft to where they stand, but coporations don't do that typically and this one does not have a good track record on that front. We have what we have and trying to blow smoke over some magical nirvana of 'legit' is, IMO, looking at the whole thing through a thick set of rose colored lenses... The magnitude of the emotional arguments, based on little more than unbridled hate toward NCSoft, also tells me that if players think any of thier $ would get to NCSoft, then going 'legit' will, in fact, 'ruin the game' for them. Many players IMO based on posting feel the need to be 'validated' that they are 'doing the right thing', be that getting NCSoft to make it 'legit', or eschewing NCSoft because to be 'legit' they have to be involved. A whole heap of people that play this game seem to me to need this external validation to make themselves happy from my POV. -
A Call for a little transparency, just a touch.
jubakumbi replied to DR_Mechano's topic in General Discussion
From my POV, the forum playerbase will actually jump ship if the HC servers become 'legit', because it will mean NCSoft is actively involved. I think there are also a large number of lurkers that will also either stop playing or move to private servers if NCSoft is involved. Will those numbers be larger or smaller than the numbers being 'legit' will pull into the game? Who can say? There are a lot of people wanting the 'feel' better about playing something 'legit' as if it's some form of life validation for the time they spend playing or something from my POV, that also hate NCSoft with every single breath. IMO, the current status quo is pretty much what anyone should expect. Nothing lasts for ever, games come and go, and the technology to run them often becomes obsolete in anything other than an emulator for a handful of people determined to hold on to 'the good old days'. It's just talking in circles about stuff for which we have no real data, everyone just keeps trying to find conspiracy thoeries and ulterior motives, when in reality it's just another pirated game that might live for decades or die tomorrow. I get that plenty of people like to talk in circles though... ECHO, Echo, echo.... -
A Call for a little transparency, just a touch.
jubakumbi replied to DR_Mechano's topic in General Discussion
I do not disagree at all. Input into the process when desired is often quite helpful to get things started and help people know what they are building will be liked, to get over creative dry spells, etc. In this case I am a total realist. Whatever they do some will love and some will hate and both groups will think they are in the majority, both in numbers and 'being right', just more unneeded drama, IMO. This has not changed IMO with these things since I started playing MMOs and reading the forums for them, I don't expect the results here to be vastly different. Therefore, all the servers runners should really just do what they want and people can like it or not, full stop, IMO, and not give much of hoot about what the tiny percent of the population that uses the forums cares about anything, but then again I have never cared about what anyone thinks of me or my actions, so I am very biased here...
