Anyone a Psychologist who can help explain this to me?
jubakumbi replied to Solarverse's topic in General Discussion
Hm. So OP asks 'why?' people do a thing. OP makes it plain this is not 'old school' gaming and that people who don't say 'I was wrong' are somehow 'wrong' and wants a 'psychological study'. Answers are given, mostly 'that is how people are'. Some ask the OP 'why?', thinking based on statements, validation is desired, in addition to a supposed 'need to know'. It is possible to infer deeper intent, correctly or not, and the 'feelings' behind forum posts, after all. OP, IME, has constantly berated and insulted on this forum in the same way, through insinuation that anyone not do things their way is 'wrong' or 'bad'. We are very 'bad' for not celebrating the 4th of July in Paragon, for example. Some people like me point out the OPs statements of 'the way things are and should be' are just opinion, not cultural norms to be worshipped, knowing it makes no real difference, any more than the OPs outlook does. Oh, there was snark, it's a game forum, let's not forget the snark. Not a court of law, not a real life gathering, just a random game forum with random humans on the Internet. No one here has any real authority over anyone else here, unless we have some elected officials or something in the thread. My outlook, the outlook of other posters, and that of the OP are all just manifestations of our own personal delusions. The only victims here are the wasted electrons. As far as the physics of cutting off a semi are concerned, anyone that puts the lives of everyone around them at risk due to their own internal time-table should not be allowed the privilege of a driver's license, IMO. Drive calm, drive happy. Happy Holidays! 🎄 -

Been playing MMOs since they were MUDs. Some people have always thought they needed to tell the other players what to do and how to do it, this is true. There have always been plenty of us that don't want or need such people on our teams or in our games. You continue to use the 'old school gamer' thing - I am an old school gamer and I do not view the world the same way, or play games the same way, so it really has no meaning here. You are trying to twist the idea of 'old school gaming' into some top-down (decidedly American and Ageist IMO) way of playing that has always been just one way to play games out of many. As we have discussed, you think there should be leaders and followers, that nothing can really be accomplished by teams, only by motivated individuals, and that 'traditional' things, meaning the ones you find important, should always be followed. Trying to twist the idea that your way is the old-school way, the traditional way, and the right way, has been your schtick from the get-go. I simply pose a different PoV. IMO, the underlying reasoning behind this thread remains the same - the need to validate your way of thinking and playing the game, by blaming some 'psychological study' for why people don't play the way you do and interact with others in your top-down, follow orders outlook. I mean, you even think the person with the star has some mysterious power and obligation... -

IMO, you are still just looking for validation from random people on the Internet that you knew a bit of data they did not. IMO, the more pressing question is why you think people are in any way obligated psychologically to 'show you respect for your words', honestly. The real reasons could be so many things...ESL, chat boxes off, kids not allowed to chat with strangers, trivial challenges, tired of being told what to do in a game, or simply that people learn from their own mistakes much more accurately than they do from the stories of others...'don't touch the hot thing, it will burn you', 'ouch!', 'see?' IMO, the psychological answer is that some people need to stop thinking that all other people should think like they do, see the world the way they do, and value the same things they do. -
So, basically, if it does not fit in your view of how things should be, it's not valid. Got it. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I prefer the nice and quiet, no hype zone. Until it's on the servers, IME, it does not exist, so I just wait for the patches to hit, regardless of game, hype just get everyone in a tizzy.

This is an awesome description. To some people, it's about numbers, not the experience itself, which I also find a little sad.

The true release of the code base and IP such that anyone who desires to do so can prop up servers and play out in the open, without having a single entity dictating how the game will go forward, or fear of legal threats, with licenses if need be. Realease the code an IP as a kit to build on, etc., a rules-system with a world that anyone can alter. A change in the playerbase to truly accept all players of all abilities and playstyles, including accepting server communities of differing outlooks, without resorting to the typical hateful gamer rhetoric. A change in the behaviour of mis-informed and fearful players that feel the need to troll others over not being creative enough or bringing down the Bad Mouse. IMO, if this happens, all the rest of the things people want will be more possible, from small changes to new content. ...what? You stated 'endless possibilities' after all! 😉

Yep, just like the other threads say, this is the best community evar! Such acceptance and empathy! So calm and reasonable! So friendly! So much Love!

I have never directly felt unwelcome, never been kicked in CoH, etc. I get compliments on my playing, in game. I have, however, seen many others abused, denigrated, and attacked, for doing nothing more than what the game allows, for not using powers 'right', and for not having creative enough costumes and names, and then bailed on said teams with a few /gignores. I just don't have even a small amount of patience in my life anymore for people that want to control over how others play a game, based on some house rules or peer-pressure based 'right' way to play, due to thier own over-controlling and pushy personalities. I can say fully, I do not care what any player or forum poster thinks of me or my outlook, the only person I care about how they view me is downstairs reading, so I will say to anyone at any time what I really think, they can like it or not, I do the same thing in all parts of my life. I do not play these games to make new friends, it's just not how I roll. People will like me for who I am, or not. So yeah, while I have observed these things, like so many things in life, I have not myself had to deal with much in-game, just the forum posters that decide I am a terrible person because I won't conform or put put in a box. But I care about how people treat each other. IME, the way prople treat each other is no 'better', 'more friendly', or anything different than what I see in other games than in CoH. The petty llama drama of the trivial things people in this community come up with to use as weapons against each other is sometimes sickening. Just like all the other MMOs out there...
-
Live and Homecoming forums are were/full of voices that are happy to tell other they are playing the game wrong. The in-game references were in-game on Live, the only drama on HC I have seen has been over ramping to +1 or +4. I have played pretty much every major MMO for months as well as some minor ones, some for as much time as CoH has gotten from me. Even now, I know there are people that play on HC that are not overt about it in-game, but they hold on to the idea they play the game 'right' and others do not. That entire idea is in all MMOs IME. Sure, there are 'bad words' and 'hate speech' in all MMO chat bubbles and cries of 'noobs' ruining things. IME, no where else besides CoH have I seen such a level vitriol and discord between players with anyone that 'plays the game wrong', or had such strongly controlling personalities attempt to make entire populations think they are not 'good/creative enough' to play the game in the first place. I mean, people here even complain about 'how' people get help or communicate, because, oh goodness me, they used the 'wrong' chat channel. All that experience simply does not translate to 'more friendly' in my mind, just an average/median/normal group of humans.

IME, my Elec-x3 Dom can handle pretty much anything. Mezzed and drained, enemies just fall over...arrested. She was still a little squishy if she did not get the jump on things before IOs and even now, a bad roll can take here out, but not often.

I get along really well with Spanish speakers IME, so I will join those teams. 😉

All on Pinnacle back in the day. As I have said, the general population on HC has been fine, IME, in-game, the hate I have seen has been on these forums, not in the game. I think it is short sighted and ill-informed to think that the entire population of the City community is 'better' simply because a few posters on the forums have had mostly positive experiences. People are people, some good, some bad, but mostly somewhere in the middle, and all of the good vs bad is just made up human drama anyway, that all starts with one group thinking is better than another, IME. When you have people that literally think they way they play is 'right' and that others are 'wrong' when they do not conform, I don't find that to foster a 'better' community.
-
I am simply blunt, which I know to many people is considered confrontational, rude, and uncouth, even if I am not attempting any of those things, because I bring up points that many find uncomfortable to discuss. I start conversations by getting down to brass tacks, not 'how are the kids and the spouse?' I choose to address and talk about the things that are real issues, like how we treat each other as humans, not if the bonus on that attack should be +1 or +2. So, I am quite used to the 'static' many people think I create by not conforming tp the lingustic interlocks many people prefer at every human exchange. It's not that, I am well versed there, I know when I have caused someone to be uncomfortable most of the time. What I am talking about are things that I have seen in this community where I have have had no involvement. City of Heroes is the only game I have ever been playing in which the leader of the big raid doubled down on the thier thinking that the developers should be killed. I clarified, thinking it hyperbole, but no, the person was serious, the developers should be put to death because of something they did not like about an interface. I stopped playing incarnet raids on my server because this person was one of the main leaders. City of Heroes is the only game in which I have seen people kicked off of teams for nothing more than a lack of badges (winter baby). City of Heroes is the only MMO I have played that had players demand other players use or not use specific powers or be kicked. City of Heores is the only game I have played where some players think others should be banned for not being creative enough to satisfy them. We even have people at this stage who are determined anything not added by the 'original team' is _wrong_ for even existing. I can go on. I have seen plenty of snark in other MMOs and games over the years, but what I see in City of Heroes has been direct, targetted hate toward anyone and everyone that would even suggest something new or different, even when we are at the point we all know nothing huge could even be changed, the mere suggestion brings down holy hell. I just prefer in my delusion to try and look at things objectively. I have had hundreds if not thousands of hours in game with friends and solo over the years. IME, this group of people is no different at scale than any other group of game playing humans, this group is not some 'cut above' even if the it want's to delude itself. Even here, by saying I don't think the CoH community is 'better', it's taken as as me thinking it's 'bad', which is not true, I just think it's it's average, no better and no worse than any other online game community, IME. The moment a group of people decide they are 'better' than other groups is the moment, IME, that group loses all relevance and credibility. TBH.
-
I just don't see it. From my PoV, the City community is no different than any other one, it never has been. This community has its share of good and bad, just like all the others. I have had my very worst MMO player experiences in CoH and I have had many better player experiences in other MMOs. Personally, I find the level of righteous arrogance this community has about how wonderful it is to be some serious rose-colored glasses by a few people that choose to see what they want to see. And watch out if you if you are anything but a 'yes man' to this group, they will vilify and demean you faster than any 'toxic' community in any other game I have played. There are some really good people here, there are some really terrible people here, just like everywhere else, this community is not some shining star of human behaviour, IME, at all, just an average sampling. Happy Holidays. Be excellent to each other. Live in reality.

My life mantra is "I do what I want, when I want, with whom I want". Has not really changed since I was a teenager, now in my 50s. I mostly soloed the game on Live, I solo the game now as none of my RL friends wanted to come back. From my PoV, I have to wait on other humans in my way all the time, everyday in the real world. The last thing I need in my playtime is having to wait for some random person to go AFK and have the rest of the team not want to do anything until they return. On the other hand, the last thing I want to do is make some other random human wait for me to go fill my bowl. The virtual world is really one of the only places I can truly enjoy my free time without having another human decide to ruin or waste it. Just look at some of the posters here, waiting, prepared with lists of 'undesirable playstyles', ready to lecture and correct others on the 'right' way to play. I don't need that in my life, thanks. 🙂 With IOs and Incarante powers, my characters can actually become Super, unlike so many other MMO games where the boundries prevent a single character from clearing content. IMO, the value of this game lies in the fact that there are no barriers preventing a single character from ultimate power. I love the FF MMO, right up until I am forced onto a team to clear content to progress in the main story, for example. There is no "I" in team, which is why I don't team very much at all. So far, my Elecx3 Dominator and my DP/MA Blaster have been very effective and fun. Working on a couple Tanker ideas now. Just because a game is an MMO, it does not have to mean you have to team, ever, I have played almost almost all of them solo. The City was one of the first that really broke the need for a trinity in MMOs and I will always be thankful to it's creators for that alone. IME, my free time on the planet is better spent playing games solo over waiting for other peoples RL difficulties to pass so I can kill more pixels.

The Current PUG Meta (aka ramblings of an old man)

I guess the only real response left to such eloquent prose is, "No u!". So, RIP, I guess, for your "no hard feelings, we just see things differently outlook". As the saying implies, you can't really know someone fully until you play games with them. -

Posters here have said just these things from my PoV. You simply look at the statements is a very different light than I do, as we have discussed. Your ageist attack simply shows me that there are still plenty of people that you and others want to silence because we see this in a different light. You and others want everyone to sit down and shut up and play your way and tell us that what we are doing for fun is wrong. Not going to happen. I am fully grown up enough to recognise people that want the rest of the world to stop changing because they cannot keep up...and not afraid to call them out on it when they decide to try slow the rest of us down. You have already stated the meta means little to you and I have already told you it's all that matters to me. Perhaps you should 'grow up' and remember the mature outlook you have stated you have so that we can converse like adults. This kind of post simply shows how hollow your own acceptance of opposing outlooks really is. IMO. -

I don't need to be told how to enjoy my free time by the restrictive rules of others, thanks. Chaos is awesome, prescribed rules and forced playstyles are boring and take no thought, other than to follow the prescribed 'rules'. I choose not to follow but to enjoy my games on my own terms. My gaming experience does not need to be derivative of the need for everyone to obey, thanks, I prefer unfettered creativity. As as has been discussed, the playstyle you desire can be accomplished, just find the people who like the 'rules' you want to enforce and play with them. If there are not enough of them for your liking, changing the game to force them to play your way in IMO a terrible idea. Why do so many people want to go backwards and restrict others just because they cannot/will not adapt? -
Exactly, I see no reason to restrict comics, they can cover any and all genres. Some people in the thread think that the game would in fact not be worth playing if the system were used to create more fantasy based gaming experiences. I think the underlying and system and the bent toward comics means CoH can contain any and all genres.
-
Comics cover every timeframe, genre, power level, and type of character. There will be players that love every genre one could to the game as a zone. There will be players that will hate anything added. The CoH 'system' allows for the creation of characters in all of these worlds, I see no reason to restrict this system. So I think if anyone adds anything fun to play, it won't matter what genre it is based upon, it will get played if it's fun. Just not interested in putting things in boxes, I prefer to cut all the boxes into tiny pieces and toss them in the recycle bin.

The code is out there, this can be done. Just prop it up and see if there are enough players that like the game that way to make it a success. IMO, it would be easier to just get a group that wants this style of play, as mentioned above, since it's possible to ignore IOs and Incarnates if you choose. Hawkeye and Thor are not really equal to one another, so having SOs and IOs on the same team still makes sense to me. I am of the opinion this is super-happy-fun-time not struggle-to-survive-time or need-a-team-to-feel-right time, so I like the power levels such that everyone can just choose what they want. IMO, the issue here is that some people will simply not quit teams. If the team is steam-rolling more than you like, is it really that hard to drop and form one that is to your liking? Is it really that hard to not follow the herd, but to instead decide to lead one more in line to ones own preferences? All of the tools needed to have groups of players enjoying the game at different levels of power and playstyles already exist IMO. At the same time, IMO, too many players want these things enshrined in code, rather than having to make choices. It's this whole wacky idea that simply because you can make a character that can break the game, you have to do so, or that the code must prevent us from doing it becaue we cannot control ourselves. We all get to choose how we play...and that is the best of all worlds from my PoV. -

Wise words. Personally, I play games in general to get away from having to wait for, cater to, and generally interact with people. I love that all ATs, IME, can solo just fine. While I do team, it's way worse of an experience IMO to have to worry at all about who showed up to play. IME, from Retail Live and now, it had never realy mattered in CoH and that has been the fun of it... Taking the powers in the group and making the mobs melt with what youv'e got, rather than pre-baking the group to have the exact combo needed is, IMO, way more fun. The perfect combo groups IME are just as boring as an OP steamroll or a herding team. Unexpected chaos is what makes the game fun for me, predictability is boring, I love RNG drops as well, random is fun, IMO.
