Beast Mastery // Trick Arrow :: The Worst Conceivable Matchup?

So~

As someone who shifts around a lot on the Discord, as well as someone who plays the game enough to watch discussion explode on Help Chat.

People seem to have a general concensus towards the idea that Beast Mastery is the absolute worst power set in the game.

... When they're not saying that Trick Arrow is.

So, I'm wondering!

Not if they're the worst, because I kinda trust people on that one -- but rather.

I'm wondering in this awesome game that we have;

Can they be;

A: Viable?

B: Effective?

Moreover;

Are they viable and effective --together--?

I mean, regardless I'm going to build this build anyway.

Just out of sheer, raw curiosity that goes outside of white room testing.

But I'm curious as to the community's thoughts, and how they'd go about building such a thing to be as effective as possible~

Thanks! ❤️

First of all.  regarding Beasts.  My xxxx/Nature Tests against Pylons, showed that Beasts was top dog.   It had the fastest time of Ninjas/Demons/Mercs/Beasts, with the same secondary /Nature slotting.  I had a 2:19 second run with Beasts.  Beasts however, is lower AOE damage than Bots/Demons in general.   In My Opinion, Beasts works best as an /Assist Train,  you single target "Petcomall Attack" them on the hard target first then pick off the weaker targets.

I had a Beast/TA MM.  It was fun, but to make it work you have to run the /TA as a Proc Monster build.  Look at the Defender Proc Monster thread for how @Sir Myshkinslotted /TA. Then port it over to Beasts/TA.   /TA is like other MM secondaries that don't have heals.  your pets will die.   But it was fun.

Here is a first pass build that I did on the concept.  It needs to be tweaked as the endo drain spamming the beast MM attacks was tough.  I'm a big MM attack spammer, I don't like leaving 15-25% of a MM's DPS off the board.   But it should get you into a good start point.  I did actually run this build to 50 but i never got the incarnates.   But again, and I can't stress this enough, just use this as a start point.  I never went through and rebuilt/refactored it to absolutely maximize survivability/endurance/procs.   Just looking at it the MM attacks should be tweaked, and probably drop assault to pick up tactics.  I'd probably turn the MM's personal attacks into proc monsters also, but to each their own!   Also I have Fortify Pack 6 slotted just for the defense set bonuses.   But it was fun.

The /TA proc portion should be pretty solid though, it pretty much matches what @Sir Myshkinhad on his Defender TA/Archery Defender.

Beast Mastery / Trick Arrow

Range Defense cap.

With Incarnates I am doing 4/8

This build went through several variations.

Just like with every build I try to max out the settings.  This build was a bit tougher because it had debuff but not much DPS.

Another issue I encountered was Oil Slick had nothing to light it up and using the taser temp was caused 2 issues.

  1.  When using Taser if failed to light the Oil Slick it would make the Oil Slick target disappear.  I could fire all my arrows at the Oil Slick target without an issue but once I used the Taser temp. BAM it was gone ! - So that was No good.
  2. Taser was short ranged and it was putting me into Melee combat range.
  3. I wanted to stay thematic but had to pick up fire blast, I changed it Green to try to keep it nature magical like. But was still Green Fire.  At that point It just made sense to rework the build max it out a bit more.

This was my first build.

I removed Super Speed, Maneuvers, Tactics and Temp Invulnerability from Field Mastery and went Kick, Tough, Weave and Fire Blast.

Had a reliable way to ignite and another DPS but still was running 1/6 at best and kill the 2 purple con NPC ( forgot their names A.T.P.) during the Incarnate missions was difficult. I had to log in with another account and burn the mind controlled hero down to finish the mish.

Second build with Fire Blast

Final Build

I removed  Disruption arrow  and Fortify Pack and went Field Mastery again.

Picked up Temp Invulnerability , Energy Torrent and Explosive Blast.  Colored them green

Now I have 2 more attacks and 2 more ways to light up Oil Slick and I am 5 points away from S/L Resistance cap.

I don't find it so horrible at all. My Incarnates are NOT high. highest is T3 and its reactive for the 75% for fire damage.   I needed the Ageless for the endurance because of the endurance issues.  That is what I needed from Incarnates.

But is it my Farm fire/rad Brute ?? NO...

I think that is the issue people have.. It isn't that toon that can zip through a mission in 20 seconds and kill everything.

If they get rid of the endurance crash on EMP arrow that would be helpful.

Further there is no power in Trick Arrow that will ignite Oil Slick. Oil Slick does  A LOT of DPS..  So you will need some sort of epic power to ignite it.

Take this build. Remove the 2 attacks from Mastermind and slot it with Pets and I would say your pretty much set. Pick up the Barrier Incarnate

I would take 2 IOs out of energy torrent and put one in aid other and another in aid self for a bit more heal and recharge.. 8 seconds is a bit long on aid self.

I quickly mashed this up with what I recommended. I am not big on all these proc IOs but I went that route since that seems to be the fashion now a days.

My Demon/TA MM was, and continues to be, the absolute worst combo I’ve ever played.  I farm a bunch, and I play a bunch of alts.  I farm to feed my alts.  I think nothing of dropping a billion in IO’s per alt.  Some have much more.  And once I hit 50, I almost always run the toon through incarnates up to T4.  Then I park them and pull them out here and there for certain missions or just to have fun.  This was the ONLY AT I ever got to 50, summarily respecc’ed out of all IO’s and deleted.  It was a mercy killing.

Demon/TA was a chore.  ROAR twang twang ROAR twang twang Oil Slick ROAR twang ROAR ignite slick ROAR.......for like 5 minutes a spawn soloing.  In teams I may as well have been the beer cart driver for all the uselessness I brought to the team.

This was all back on Live before the proc changes.  This thread gives me hope I could try it again but use Procs to make it semi-useful.  Thematically it was a cool toon with a great backstory (evil Cupid).  Looked cool too.  But damn if it wasn’t weak sauce.

That made me laugh out loud..

I just wanted to clarify something..

I have a second account that I PL all my toons to 50 now..

I will tell you this clearly, Petless or Semi Petless Masterminds could not be leveled without either going regular route of having all the pets and respecing at 50 or getting Power leveled because the ENDURANCE drain is just too massive for them without incarnates. Meaning leveling Petless with just attacks is TOO MUCH.. The Mastermind attacks are double the endurance of any other archtype for the same attack.

200 to 300 million is my max.

I usually power level the toon to 50.. Transfer the about 100k or a bit more over to the toon in question. Then pull out the other toons and transfer over any IOs, Merits, converters, ETC to make the build.

Those unique IOs are expensive at 20+ Million a each.. I created a build for a Typed defense cap Dom that needs about 350 million just for those unique IOs.. That build won't happen any time soon.

As related to Procs. I need to test out Oil Slick because I do not honestly see the procs working.. I will go over to that island with all the monkeys and do some testing for the procs.

Beasts have a bad reputation for being a weak set, but I'm not sure why, since in DPS tests, they invariably come out on top.

My own Beasts/Trick Arrow character plays fantastic.  Love that guy.  (TA isn't great, but it's better when you don't have to fit TA attacks between regular attacks)

No way would I put Beasts as the worst powerset in game, I don't even put them in the bottom tier of MM primaries.

They do have nuances, flyers can be problematic for example, but seeing that they come out on top of DPS tests is no surprise to me.

TA on the other hand...

Gosh I know. It's why selection of secondary requires careful consideration. If only there were secondaries with -fly powers.
