Curious about this combo as I don't see a lot of guides for it. And maybe some critique on this build so see if i could get perma PA. I'm like 4 secs off.

ill/TA is my new favorite combo for a troller, right now. I don't know what it is it just fun. I have been working on a build for it too but can't seem to get everything I want. I want perma PA with soft cap S/L/E and R. Is that too much to ask for? Anyways I got the soft capped to S/L/E and R but PA is down for 10 second which is too long IMO. With the Alpha slot I can get close but I would rather not relay on that. Anyways here is my build I'm working on. Maybe it can give you some ideals and we both get what we want.

True, but with higher defenses less likely you will be mez. and with PA it is even less likely. I always like to keep break frees with me too. 

 

I moved some slots around on your build and made PA perma. Just took some slots out of Glue arrow, which IMO doesn't need many slots, and moved one to PA and the other to Hasten to get both to be perma.

If money is no object, I'd go with something like this. Please notice that I've set IOs in PA and Hasten to +5s.

  1. Perma hasten
  2. Perma PA
  3. 40+ defenses to S/L/E and Ranged
  4. A few damage procs that will help you kill things faster

If I were you I would probably slot Maneuvers with 5 Red Fortunes and use the spare slot place a Lockdown+2Mag on Emp Arrow. You would no longer have Perma PA (0,14secs off) but you'd gain a ranged hold that would hold everything short of EBs.

EDIT: Or move a slot from Weave and put it in Emp Arrow. Then you'd get both perma PA and a wonderful Emp Arrow.

I moved some slots around on your build and made PA perma. Just took some slots out of Glue arrow, which IMO doesn't need many slots, and moved one to PA and the other to Hasten to get both to be perma.

LOL I forgot about putting an recharge IO in the power very clever, I can't believe I overlooked that. I guess I was so focused on set bonuses. Wow that was good. And perma hasten nice.

That's a nice build may look at it as a secondary.

Illusion/Trick Arrow pair relatively well, with TA making up for a lot of the holes in Illusion.

 

That said, Traps is so much better than Trick Arrow at most of the same stuff that, even as a person who doesn't min-max, I'd find it frustrating.

 

I am hopeful Trick Arrow gets a review at some point in the future. It has a lot of potential to be a cool set, but in its as-is form it plays closer to a Blaster Manipulation secondary than a Buff/Debufff set while lacking the appropriate damage modifiers.

I had a perma PA Ill/TA/Fire on Retail Life, and it was one of my favourite Controllers. The key is playing completely at range. Teams often don't know what TA brings to the table (not many have tried it out because most think the set is crap), but its debuffs are excellent. Especially useful when a team is already softcapped, it can really help steamrolling content.

So glad to see Ill/TA/Mace love here. It was one of those semi-rare combinations that I adored and also discovered how powerful it could be. Sinister Trickster allowed me to first  solo many GM's and a few AV's pre-incarnates with this build but had I to do it over, I think I would build for Range defense but I didn't have to worry about that as much with perma-PA. I have thought about making another on Homecoming but working on a few others.

TA was always a weak set statistically, but I always thought that it was "easier" to play than other sets... all attacks are ranged. All attacks are either single-target or AoE, no worries about cones. If you ignore Flash, Illusion is also an all-ranged set, so they work together very well in playstyle. This smoothness of play means that you get closer to achieving the optimal efficiencies of both sets, whereas other combinations may have higher on-paper statistics, but it's hard to actually achieve them because you have to worry about switching ranges, aiming cones, getting near teammates for AoE buffs, etc. Ill/TA is a good combination in terms of powers and statistics, and a great combination in terms of playstyle, so it plays a lot more effectively than the sum of its stats.

 

For example, Earth/TA would seem to do the same since Earth is also all-ranged, but it doesn't do nearly as well because you end up with too many Slows, too much -Def, Earthquake neutralizing the Sleep, etc. Illusion/TA has PA gathering mobs together for Acid Arrow, it lacks an Immob or Slows, it benefits a lot from enemy-oriented debuffs for PA while Earth likes to have buffs up on Animate Stone, etc.

 

Sometimes, some combinations work together because of complementary powers. Sometimes they work together because of playstyle. When you get both, then the combination really plays better than the sum of its parts... and while TA is by itself kind of weak, Illusion isn't. So you end up with a surprisingly strong character.

I too had an Illusion/TA/Fire on Live and it's awesome in teams or solo. And very safe. Plenty of debuffs and control. Surprisingly decent damage, too. I imagine with procs it could be even better.

I have gotten to 50. My build which I will post later is more proc heavy than Spookybastard's.

 

It's fun I can take on most 1x8 easily, very safe and oil slick is the burn... I mean bomb. Still working on my incarnates.

 

Here is a bind to help you with Oil Slick:

/bind b "target_custom_next enemy alive Oil Slick"

 

Despite the description energy or fire with ignite oil slick. Ion judgement since it's energy will light oil slick.

 

Not a cheap build. Lots of purples.

An update and some questions

 

Those annoying black dwarfs in ITF do not have good fear resistance. Enjoy.

 

I have tried farming. Aggro leaking is a real problem. PA cannot hold two groups well enough. Open to suggestions.

 

Incarnate:

Alpha: Cardiac

Judgement: Ion

Interface: Degenerative

Lore: ? thinking Longbow for the -regen

Destiny: Ageless

Hybrid:

  This is the problem power. Control looks interesting. I have two quick holds, fear and immobilize, so the +1 mag and that 100% stun looks tasty.  But people do not seem very positive about it. If not control, then everything else is on the table. Suggestions?

 

Assault - most of my damage is procs, pets, or pseudo pets. Does pseudo pets get the bonus?

Melee - status protection

Support - seems to buff a lot of things

 

Update, I read the Assault Hybrid Guide: 

 

 

Double hit is the way to go. It effects pets and pseudo pets if they are cast while it's running.

I made an Ill/TA on Live and I'm building a Ill/Traps now. Phantom Army keeps enemies off of you while you set up in both sets.

 

I made a Tech Origin hero so I could set off the Oil Slicks while solo. Glue Arrow will keep them pinned and acid arrow + Disruption Arrow are the kisses of death that melt AVs.

 

Now, while playing traps PA, Poison Gas Trap and Acid Mortar can distract enemies while I set up mines. Whee!

Don't skip Flash Arrow. A non-obvious characteristic of that power is the -ToHit is Unresistable. With two -ToHit IOs the power reduces ToHit to all positions by about 7.5%. This translates directly to having +7.5% Defense versus all attack sources. This can make it possible to effectively soft cap a Trick Arrow character. Because Flash Arrow does not notify enemies it's a zero-risk power. Fire it into every mob before unleashing your arsenal.
