  1. Cauterizing Blaze is very strong. It's also an easy place to hold a healing proc. It works really well, it's just not obvious. Easiest way to test its effectiveness is to jump off a tall building with it on and watch your HP drop to 1 and then climb right back up.
  2. I love my Psi/Fire, but I'm very casual about this build. There's no easy way to chain everything, but I'm usually in melee anyway to use Burn, Psychic Wail, Psi Shockwave or Mind Probe. - Will Domination takes too long and the projectile is slow. Skipped. - Psi Scream is a big cone, I took it over Psi Tornado (another slow moving projectile when I could jump into melee instead) - Scramble Thoughts -> Psi Strike -> TK Blast is a great "spike" combo to drop someone, or stun them while you hop in for melee. But you'll always have gaps in your attacks. - Fighting Carnies hurts. - It's fun laughing at Paragon Protectors who pop Unstoppable.
  3. I rolled a Traps/Seismic this week. Still a lowbie, but I expect the knockdown to help stall for time so I can lay more Trap Mines. Also, after all these years I finally understand caltrops. Usually my blasters fry everything or I'm permaheld so I never bothered. I could have used it on my Illusion/Traps controller but I have so much control nothing bothers me anyway. But on this defender I get enough free time to blast more.
  4. As the blaster who ate a lot of debt, it was fun figuring out how much my Rad/Dark could handle. Usually this involved jumping in, Soul Drain, Irradiate and praying enough missed me I could kill 'em in time. But I was aware I was gonna eat dirt, I'm a blaster. Thanks for preventing many team wipes!
  5. I tried these powersets on Test last night and fell in love with this build. It reminded me of my Rad/Dark Corruptor back on live (seriously, try it if you haven't) but now with even MORE damage.
  6. Elec gets 2 melee attacks early and is fun to solo with at low levels. AoEs arrive a little late though (28 and 35 is the PBAoE, bleh) but at least you can add 2 Force Feedback procs to help Domination come back sooner. Which is nice if you're crazy like me and trying to skip Hasten.

    I Can Haz Guns?

I still want to make a Family-like mafia don with Gravity Control and some kind of brawling/gun/SS assault. Oh well, at least ninja type Doms finally have an outlet.
  8. The beta build is helping me out on Catalina. The normal launcher is failing to download the update.
  9. And if you have an old installation of Wine, delete/uninstall that before continuing. Took me too long to realize my old install was screwing things up.
  10. Okay. Long ago, I had installed wine and xquartz from source. I finally went through my harddrive and deleted all of those files. Now when I run the installer it shows an applescript asking if I want to install xquartz and wine via homebrew. On my older laptop, the installer installed wine and xquartz without my need to delete files. After installing, both machines asked me to install Mono. I clicked the Install button, waiting for Mono, and I was able to log in and play. In summary: An old manual install of wine screwed everything up. Thanks for letting me ramble all over this thread lol.
  11. Something's going on with wine. Tried on a new login, got the "The Wine configuration is being updated" message and then the message stayed on for an hour. I'll try installing this on my older laptop and let it try to update overnight.
  12. So I can rule out the launcher; City of Heroes actually tries to run. Unfortunately it then crashes after "Loading" sign but before it opens the window leading to the log in screen. - I deleted my game install, ran Island Rum and downloaded assets - Rebooted - I uninstalled wine (I had an old install lying around) - I tried on a different login (no "Loading" sign appeared, I never installed wine on there) - I tried uninstalling xquartz (I had an old install lying around) - I scanned again, no additional files were downloaded - I tried HC Beta and HC Staging 64 bit (same behavior) I'll try the Beta on my other login. If that doesn't work, I have an older mac laptop I don't mind wiping and installing from scratch.
  13. Looks like the normal client has been updated and gives this error. Is there anyway I can get wine's logs? I can't play anymore on my mac.
  14. So when I start the client, it gives this popup for a few minutes, and then crashes. I've submitted crash logs. Neither my Beta or Release CoH launcher will work until I restart the computer.
  15. “Island Rum Beta” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software. I tried running the Beta from the /Applications folder, but Apple's security is blocking me. I can get around this by opening System Preferences, going to Security & Privacy -> General and clicking "Open Anyway". Will test some more after my work shift is over.
  16. On live I had a Kin/Arch. Siphon Speed + Hover lets you fly around the battlefield with quick animation blasts, so you're basically playing a schmup. Storm/Fire is my Def on Homecoming and she just rides the chaos. Freezing Rain and Rain of Fire causes minions to scatter instead of attack you. Tornado melts mobs and Lightning Storm zaps bosses. And you don't have to wait until level 35 for the fun to begin. Time is also easy. But time is always easy.
  17. Yeah, KM on a Stalker is really nice (the best AT for it, IMO) but I feel it works best on a "Toggle up and forget" armor like Willpower or SR.
  18. I feel your pain on Tremor. I love the animation but gameplay wise? Nnnnope. So, I hit 50 on my Bio/Spines tank. Yeah, that was smooth as butter. Spine Burst at level 4 is a big game changer, long before quills and throw spines comes online. I should theoretically like Kinetic Melee (cone, great PBAoE, ranged attack,) but those animation times, man. The AoE cap increases are so good. Gives tanks a great niche.
  19. If you want to use Hurricane, make sure you a) hover and b) constantly circle mobs to herd them into one location. I tried playing Ninjas/Storm on live and my problems were: - O2 Boost is not a good heal and as an MM you'll burn through endurance too quickly. - Steamy Mist, Snow Storm & Hurricane will burn through your endurance quickly. You could do without SS & Hurricane but at that point you might want to consider /Cold - Freezing Rain, Tornado & Lightning Storm are the coolest parts of the set but the last 2 are late bloomers. You're stuck until level 35 and then you can ride the chaos. But don't let a forum post stop you. Hop onto the test server, make a Ninja/Storm at level 40 and see if it clicks.
  20. I had an Ice/Psi on Live and my Ice/Savage is on HC. Both are very survivable in melee. My Ice/Psi would drop an Ice Slick, jump into the mob, Drain Psyche and Psychic Shockwave. Jump back a bit and use Psychic Scream (or whatever the cone is) to flatten the minions, then hop in to melee the Lt/Boss. Feels good, but you have to joust a lot to nuke enemies. My Ice/Savage usually skips the Ice Slick - Frozen Aura is always on anyway and Savage Leap gets the party started. Do some melee attacks to max out my frenzy and then drop the PBAoE to finish off the minions. By then Savage Leap has recharged and I can either kill an Lt or tag a runner. In both cases, Jack Frost helps out a lot by being a tank with frozen aura and melee holds. You can aim most of your attacks in his direction.
  21. If you plan to stick to purely ranged I would suggest /Psi or /Fire as your secondary. /Fire has a lot of ranged attacks and has great damage (still the highest damaging secondary?) /Psi, as stated before, has lots of slows and its level 20 power helps survivabilty dramatically. I had a level 50 Ice/Psi back on live and it was a blast.
  22. Skipped it on my Time/Ice Defender, since Ice has enough slows already. Took Acrobatics instead for the Hold protection. Glad I could skip it, seemed superflous.
  23. I made an Ill/TA on Live and I'm building a Ill/Traps now. Phantom Army keeps enemies off of you while you set up in both sets. I made a Tech Origin hero so I could set off the Oil Slicks while solo. Glue Arrow will keep them pinned and acid arrow + Disruption Arrow are the kisses of death that melt AVs. Now, while playing traps PA, Poison Gas Trap and Acid Mortar can distract enemies while I set up mines. Whee!
  24. Sorry for reviving this thread, but I want to post the fix/workaround for anyone else who comes across this. You need the unzip the CoH client before it installs. Otherwise IslandRum will download the files, but it has nowhere to put it, so waste a lot of time doing nothing. Install IslandRum. Make a "City of Heroes" folder in your /Applications folder. Run IslandRum. It will ask if you want to download the Game Client. Click OK. When IslandRum finishes downloading the Game Client, you will see "macclient.zip" in your "City of Heroes" folder. Unzip that file and it will create a file called CoH with Statesman on it. Quit and restart IslandRum. IslandRum will download the files and add them to the CoH launcher. You will know this is working because the CoH file size increases with each downloaded file. Mine started at around 460 MB and ended at over 5.44 GB. Once it finishes downloading, you won't see the "error loading plist" message anymore. IslandRun will try to launch CoH. If CoH still doesn't load after this, try running the WineskinLauncher app inside CoH. If you look inside the package contents it's at Contents/MacOS/WineskinLauncher. Good luck to anyone reading this (and hopefully the Mac client still works in 10.15)
