RobRauff Posted May 1, 2020 Posted May 1, 2020 (edited) Okay, please be patient with me as I am going to try to list everything I have done to get this game to work with no avail. Some background: I was running the game for close to 4 weeks when all of the sudden I got the "two black windows"--reference photos below. This happened after no OS upgrade, I changed nothing on my computer except the wifi it was connected to, which is my own router. Here are my specs **30April2020** macOS: Mojave 10.14.6 MacBook Pro(Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) Processor: 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 Graphics Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB Applications currently installed: Island Rum(v. 040520202) Wine Stable 5.0 Wine Bottler Homebrew -winetricks Things I have tried already: Forums posts in which I found these solutions attached. Clean Install. This includes removal of: homebrew, island rum, CoH folder, uninstalling winetricks (Forum post) Removing the ~/.privatewine folder and letting it re-create itself (Forum Post) Removing the .wine and .private wine libraries. (Forum Post) So my problem at first was this screen: After much randomness, and reinstalling the game 3 different times, this is now my problem: Keep in mind this screen only comes up after i delete the ~/.privatewine folder. If I do not delete the folder I dont get a "wine64-preloader" and the launcher just goes from a green check back to normal. **01Apr2020** UPDATE: I upgraded to Catalina 10.15.4. I removed Wine-Stable, Winetricks, Winexe, Homebrew, and the old Island Rum. Reinstall the new Island Rum and the new files associated with it. Here is what my "coh" folder looks like. Currently my problem is that I am still getting the "wine64-preloader" hangup. I am really out of options at this point. I have exhausted all forum posts and there seems to be no comprehensive guide, which is understandable because Macs stink for gaming-but it is what I am working with. I was hoping this post can serve as a step by step guide for those who are not so tech-savy such as myself to get this game back up and running. I appreciate any and all advice. I understand this is a purely volunteer ran Edited May 1, 2020 by RobRauff 1
Manga Posted May 1, 2020 Posted May 1, 2020 Look for a file inside the CoH folder called islandrum.sh. Open it with a text editor, and copy/paste each command one at a time into Terminal. You should get an error with the last command, that's what we need to see.

I haven't gotten back to it (life issues), but I had the same (?) issue in Catalina, but not Mojave and had simply used the files there with no custom nonsense. Do you mean the game files and Old launcher, or just the game files with the new launcher?

Im not exactly sure what you mean, but I have tried both Island Rums and reinstalling the game. Nothing has worked. I might try reinstalling the game again tonight just for kicks....
RobRauff Posted May 7, 2020 Author Posted May 7, 2020 For the time being I am considering CoH dead on Macbooks with broken wine. Tried a bunch of things with a bunch of people but for the time-being it isnt worth investing more resources for me. I am moving my CoH over to a windows computer.

If you have another machine, great, but you could run it off of Bootcamp if you're up for minor tinkering. Taffer Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 (edited) I just got the game to launch on Catallina, using the wine64 from brew: brew cask install xquartz brew cask install wine-stable use a valid shell script to launch it: #! /bin/sh export PATH=/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin export WINEARCH=win64 export WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.privatewine cd /Applications/coh || exit 1 /usr/local/bin/wine64 "/Applications/coh/hc-bin64/cityofheroes.exe" -patchversion 20200417_1390 -auth 51.161.76.201 -patchdir homecoming At launch it offered to download/install Mono (a .NET runtime) and Gecko (an HTML renderer) and I let it. I have no idea if those are required or not. I didn't spend any time playing (yet?) because I'm working. 😉 Edited May 26, 2020 by Taffer

I have a pretty detailed step by step if you'd like to supplement, especially where wine tends to hide in your /User files making things challenging.. And as always, feel free to hit me up if you come across any issues.. Direct link to my forum post Good hunting mate.. Also, I usually open winbottler, search for CityOfHeroes.exe then install the .net just to make sure everything syncs up after brew etc... Here is an image of what i mean...

For me the problem were the garbled characters on the first line of this file. After I removed those, so the file starts with #/bin/sh And then made it read-only so IslandRum could not overwrite it. I can now start the game. I think the developers of IslandRum need to make a small fix, as this fix will probably break on the release of the next version.
