Hello virtuous heroes!

I am trying to compare and ultimately decide which of the enhancement sets to use for my /elec brute. I see reactive armor gives some great defense bonuses (aoe, ranged, and melee along with defense type). It is known that for /elec arachnos usually destroys because of their ranged toxic, which elec sucks with. I was wondering if anyone could give me their thoughts on these two sets? Unbreakble guard gives great bonuses for resists along with some defense and a 7.5% max hp boost (x4 if I slot all my powers with it). However, you will be left without much ranged defense. I plan to fill all 4 of my resists powers with either unbreakable or reactive. Doesn’t have to be /elec brute, any resist based secondaries could be used as examples. Thank you very much!

Generally, I find anything beyond 4 slots of either set to be a waste of slots.
I also have a tendency to mix them together.
I use RAs for Auto Resists and UGs for toggles.

You’ll just have to get used to puckering up when facing +4/x8 Arachnos.  Depending on the primary, it’s possible to get your /Elec Brute up to decent levels of Ranged DEF, at least within a small luck of softcap.  But you’ll still find the debuffs landing and starting a cascading failure.

What works well for me with Arachnos is herding.  That pulls the ranged attackers in close, makes it easier for me to kill them along with everyone else.

The 7.5% hp boost is a unique and can only be slotted once.

A 5th slot in UG grants Toxic resists, which for you with Elec, can use a bit of.  I vigorously pursued Toxic on my Elec tank and got to over 60% Toxic res.  Even a number like 30 would help avoid insta-face planting against that type.

Oh I just noticed this is a month and half old, so I'm sure by now this brute has been built and incarnated, but still...

I personally like using unbrealable guard sets for elec/rad/resist based sets. The main reason I like it is because it allows you to easily stack up melee defense. If you get enough unbreakable guards/obliterations/other melee defense bonuses you can softcap melee defense, which covers a lot of the damage you will be encountering. Even getting to 32.5% just needs a single purple insp to get to softcap.

Reactive armor has good defense bonuses, but they are small and typed and will require more effort into getting to softcap with a zero baseline.

Plus unbreakable has nice resist bonuses.

Assuming you have the money, I think it's best to aim for S/L soft cap.  Due to the way set bonuses work, aiming for S/L soft cap will auto soft cap you to melee.  I just find that S/L soft cap covers virtually all melee attacks and many ranged/some AOE too.

Edit:

Wanted to add that /Elec Armor brutes suffer from low Psy and low Toxic resist.  Due to the prevalence of Psy damage and lack of Toxic damage in iTirials (i'm generalizing), i've chosen to use extra 4-5 slots to get Psy resist (currently at 60+%) rather than looking for set bonuses to slot toxic resists.  Not that end-game iTrials don't have toxic damage (the Hamidon mobs in Underground iTirial), but it's much less prevalent than Psy damage in iTrials (entire MoM iTrial, Seer-type mobs in iTrials).

Herding is probably the one true skill required of brutes/tanks regardless of your armor power set. Using taunt to pull in ranged enemies or Line of Sighting ranged enemies to have them run to you is the difference between an enjoyable run and a great run. It's also the difference between one tank living and one dying, even if both are identically built.

Toxic yes, psi no. Elec gets the same 26.25% resistance to Psi that it gets to S/L/F/C. Also, most of the set bonuses that give Psi resist also give toxic resist (unless you're talking about the Impervium 6% and Aegis 5% Psi resist enhancements). I mixed UG, Impervium and Aegis sets on my /Elec in order to cap S/L resists and boost F/C and Psi resists.

I think it could use a few tweaks to get closer to softcap or just hit the S/L softcap directly.  Also there's no need to really hit 90% S/L since around 70% does enough mitigation to prevent 2 shotting you from large boss attacks (outside of giant attacks meant to 1-shot you).

I meant natively, /Elec Armor suffers from low resist to psy and toxic.

Read what I wrote. Only resist to toxic is natively low (in fact, nonexistent). Resist to Psi is not low. It matches four other damage types and is higher than Neg.

Disagree strongly on the difference between 70% and 90% resists. For an attack that does 1,500 damage, it's the difference between taking 450 and 150 damage. It's not a matter of not being 2-shot - I can AFK tank most AVs that do S/L or En damage. Hitting soft cap for S/L defense would be completely superfluous. I'd like to pick up more defense, but probably looking more at trading some AoE defense for more ranged defense. Will be able to shuffle things around a bit once I upgrade the ATOs to Superior.

Effectively its weak to Toxic and negative as its lower, six slot purples grant 6% resist Psi/Toxic (and the early 6% Fire/Cold in winter) so Electric amor has a pretty good round of resists regardless, except for Negative (like 1/3 as of the others) which doesn't seem to be a high number in IO bonus.
