Coming back to Poison

Recommended Posts

So thinking of coming back to poison - in a very active way. I formerly played a Poison/Water corruptor, which was fun (although endurance was an issue) - but maybe the debuffs will prove a bit more helpful seeing how much stronger they are on Def. I know there are poison guides out there, but trying to think between 2 builds...

1st - I have -KB in here, though I don't think it's necessary with Clarion. But I'm worried with Clarion that end will be an issue...  scary. So I took Cardiac, Blah. I know i could probably get away with using the P2W vendor buffs, but not sure I wanna spend the thought to go back and do that every 8 hours.

anyways

I am trying to pick between Dark or Sonic. Dark would be seemingly more defensive while Sonic would be more offensive (for obvious reasons) -- but dark also has a heal (that I slotted for heal rather than apocalypse in this case for 20% heal on demand).... I also veered to melee defense since I'll be in melee with VG.

Now for some background - I like to run into things. I don't like to wait on teams. So being tanky is a must - but the question is am i tanky enough with VG + these defenses. Will dark serve me better with more - acc, or do I already have enough?

A Caveat, however: I play a LOT of sonic attacks - like, I've played it several times over. My favorite set (since it launched)-- meanwhile, I haven't played dark since like Issue 2. So that'd be a fun change, though I do play Necro MMs with the blasts, lol.

Also, Dual Pistols is a consideration with Ammo... though I feel like I'd end up with Incendiary anyways... thoughts on that? Not sure how I feel about spitting poison and using guns though 😛

(Yes, I am deathly afraid of End issues without Ageless here.... to the point where I would even think about getting a lore pet first just for the end buffs they give)...

Sonic

Of those two, I might take /Sonic over /Dark but mostly due to one amazing potential solo power. Siren's Song would work wonders on setting you up to go in and plant your Poison Trap.

For solo, Siren's Song is not to be underestimated.

Now, if you are looking for something a little strange but one that works surprisingly well you could try out Poison/Psy with the presence line. I have one running around on one of the servers, only like level 30 but pretty dang effective.

Using Neurotoxic Breath and Psy Scream together produces a whopping 143.5% -recharge. That itself makes you a good teammate. Psy Tornado on top of it and now it's at 181% -rech. slowed, big -rech and k-up and you are really controlling the incoming damage on a fast team.

Where it really shines is solo, Invis (Stealth/SS) in and throw out a fear followed by hold/nuke or your stun/nuke. Each of those has a single target version also to make sure the boss gets stunned/held/feared too.

Throw on some OG stun magic and some SD for big damage and you are really kinda doing some decent work.

Get out of jail free cards with Unrelenting (self res and heal/buff) and Pacify.

Dunno about soloing Giant Monsters or like that but you can definitely put the hurt on single targets too with your Envenom/Weaken/Blasting.

Poison/Sonic does just fine with a single cone [howl] you cast it while jumping in to the mob, I also use Fire Breath on my Poison/Fire, cones do just fine if you joust with them so you land on them as you finish casting . That said I have played Poison/Fire and Poison/Rad defenders on homecoming, and a plant/poison controller. Rad Blast synergizes great with it's pbaoe playstyle, lots of procs to take advantage of the constant -res. Fire is loads of damage and still does well even with defender mods because of the always-available -res. I try to go for about 30% melee defense and 45% ranged defense on my poison defenders. I also believe a few slots boosting your regen is very valuable on a character that doesn't have a self heal. A poison defender with the aforementioned melee/ranged defense, a resist patron shield and poison debuffs mitigates a ton of incoming damage so your natural regeneration can do what it is supposed to. I have 295% regen on my poison/fire defender and I take alphas just fine and do not feel like I need to munch greens. For the same reason I wouldn't go dark blast, cause I've really not had an issue playing poison/fire or poison/rad without a self heal.

All things being equal you can get a ton of healing and absorb out of the defender procs in blaze and blazing bolt and entomb in dominate.

Either build for defense, or layer up resistance with -damage for a very robust character.

The lack of a self heal isnt as big of a deal as it once was.

I love my poison/fire/psi and I also think rad blast synergizes well with poison for a variety of reasons.

I've solo'd a lot of gms with no insp/temp/lore on my poison/fire and some of them would be very difficult with a different blast set due to fire being such a good dps set. Lusca took considerable time as an example.

Looks like I am (so far) the lone Poison/Dark advocate!  While I agree with @Hjarki about DP, Dark is also very good and here's why:

Dark Blast is very proc'able, has a lot of CC powers to help keep you (and your team) alive.  It is end-heavy (cones ain't cheap).

POISON (what I take and why):

Envenom and Weaken are your bread and butter for Poison; you'll spam them often.

Alkaloid is a joke as a heal since it's single target, but I use it as a 6-set mule for Preventive Medicine.  The 20% toxic resist is cute.

Antidote is nice, a few slotting options (I usually just 1 slot, end reducer); but the resists (toxic and cold) are ok.

Poison Trap is your proc-nuke (6 damage procs) - this is amazing damage for an otherwise shit power.

Venomous Gas - very powerful toggle debuff that requires you to be in contact with the enemy.  Tough sell on Sonic or Dark (hence the DP suggestion).  However, it's not a lot to hop in, drop a poison trap, hop out... they get the debuff on them for the poison trap's proc-nuke (and your blast set nuke).

DARK BLAST (what I take and why):

Dark Blast (can't avoid, otherwise I'd take Gloom) - it's a nice filler

Dark Pit (most skip this, but it's great soft-cc, mag 2 stun); also a purple set mule for +rech (5 Absolute Amazements)

Tenebrous Tentacles (locks 'em down for debuff & nuke); adds DoT/debuff

Night Fall (main spamming attack) - really decent damage, but in DoT form, so it's not all upfront.

Torrent (a lot skip this, but it's really decent when proc'd) - this is the main spamming soft CC when you add a KB-KD proc, a +Rech proc, and 3-4 damage procs (I went with 3, as I use a Posi A/D/E to help with end costs).

Life Drain (not the greatest heal, but your only one) - I throw this in the attack chain, it's decent ST damage, and keeps you topped off.

Blackstar - probably the best nuke defenders have, you can 6-slot it with damage procs, though I go with 5 and an A/D/R purple set (more recov).

POOL SETS (what I take and why):

Leaping - because you literally need to hop in and out, move around a lot.  Combat Jumping is the best toggle ever! 😃

Fighting - because everyone always takes fighting on everything (generally)

Leadership - because you're a defender, this pool is almost mandatory with defender AT scaling!

Flight - because you don't really need Hasten, so Hover is a nice level 49 1-slot pick and LotG mule.

Mace Mastery - because you want to try and get S/L/E softcap defenses, and Scorpion Shield is the way to do it!  (well, the best way, not the only way)

It's not as fun as Nature/Dark, but I play my Poison/Dark a lot, and love the toon.  She tanks quite a bit, too.  Gotta love seeing the Brutes and Tanks waiting to see what group I attack before jumping in!

Nice build as always r0y.  You should test out moonbeam in your build if you haven't.  It's really great with procs, it seems to be right up your alley.  Not sure how you could fit it in though.  But the -res is a huge mulitplier on those procs so following up envenom with a proc'd out snipe is a huge hitter.  I love it on my poison/rad.

If I was going more for solo or small team play, I would totally have Moonbeam instead of the stun.  Even if one doesn't proc it much, the 5-set bonus from Manticore is nice.  I'll usually 5-manticore (including proc) and another proc, for a mix of POW and set bonus.  I've also proc'd it out completely for massive damage.  You are correct about it, of course!

The poison/dark I have above is really my league toon, and I don't solo much at all with her.  I'm still surprised how effective Torrent is.  So undervalued by many, I think.  It's a MASSIVE range (80' I believe) and it is up about as soon as the mobs are getting up, so if one wanted to, one could "perma-knockdown" whole groups of mobs.  It's a great opener prior to debuffing and jumping in with the debuff toggle, poison trap and blackstar.

Poison/Water is definitely how I'd go. Water's self heal and minor controls greatly help fill in the gaps for Poison.

Water overall is just truly a great set, but especially with any of the sets that lack their own heals. I've got plans to eventually embark on a Trick Arrow/Water Defender.

Tex,

Been working on a TA/H2O and you will not be disappointed. It's a very nice set overall.

My biggest problem so far is the attack chain for groups is too long. Flash Arrow/PGA/Glue/Disruption/OSA /acid/whirlpool/light OSA and watch em all melt.

That combo is fantastic solo but don't try it in a group, you'll never make it through. :D

Just as a quick side, Corruptor or Defender? as this thread has got the old juices flowing...

The 30% bonus to damage while being a solo Defender seem appealing, so too does the scourge mechanic with all of Water's wonderful AoE's...decisions decisions.

For me it would probably be a Defender to take advantage of better armor option and a strong self heal,. Since Poison offers the user very poor mitigation, that's extra important.

What did you end up changing from your previously posted build? As i'm using that as a starting point, have been tinkering for a day or so.
