Best primary to pair with /Sonic

StriderIV

Recommended Posts

Hi Heroes!

I’m looking to roll my first Defender, and I’m drawn to /Sonic as my secondary for the -res (I group with 2 friends often).

I was curious what generally are the best primaries to go with Sonic secondary. I’ve read good things about both Sonic/Sonic and Kin/Sonic. Is there one set that is most optimal? Another option I’m not aware of?

thanks!

Ultimately the answer is "whatever you want to play", it's a great debuffer on its own but there is a synergy between -res and (+dmg and -dmg).  Oh hey that's what Kinetics does.  Other primaries with +dmg and -dmg would be Thermal, Nature, Rad and Traps (maybe others I missed).

ETA - I mistakenly included Traps, which only has a source of -DMG.   Still good with Sonic, but shouldn't have been included on my list of +/-DMG powersets.

Thanks man! Thermal and Rad could be good options as well.

Great question! One runs a Bots/Devices MM and the other is a DP/Martial Blaster.

Well I think I'd lean towards the Kin vs Sonic.  Both the DP/Martial and his alternate TW/Fire will love a Kin.  The Brute has a high damage cap, plenty of room for Kinetics buffs.  Flip side is the Bots are ranged, it'll be harder to buff both players and bots with the +damage.  The Sonic shields will help both the players and in general the debuffs of Sonic work regardless of positioning of bots and players.  The DP and Brute, whichever he's running, will both happily take Disruption Field into melee where it'll help everyone.

But yes in the end either would work well.

Any feelings on how Storm Summoning matches up to Kinetics or Sonic with Sonic secondary?

Storm/Sonic is a great choice. Your sonic attacks will boost the damage of Tornado and Lightning Storm (and everyone else's) significantly on hard targets, it shreds AVs like paper, and Freezing Rain is plenty to take care of fodder.

Compared to kinetics as a force amplifier it wont be as consistently high, but it has a much, much higher damage ceiling, especially at endgame when people will be hitting their damage caps much quicker and/or the fulcrum shifts will only be providing a partial damage buff to reach it. This is considering that an IO build can get 10-25% damage buff from set bonuses, 10-18% per leadership assault, 100-130% from enhancement value and Musculature or Intuition Alphas, Assault Hybrid adds another small damage buff, and gaussians/build up all eat into your damage cap and potential benefit from Fulcrum Shifts. And then there are red insps. Resistance buffs are uninhibited and are more effective the higher your damage buff/base damage is. MM pets, especially bots will often not get boosted by fulcrum shift at all, but will always benefit by attacking a resistance debuffed target.

O2 Boost is a very underrated spot heal, especially if you regularly group with blasters, as it gives them Stun protection and more freedom to play as aggressively as they want to when you can top off their health.

Below is the build I run. Scream can be replaced with Howl if that is your fancy, I mostly use the character for tasks with lots of hard target, GMs and AVs so I prefer the single target damage. I use Burnout quite a bit to double cast Freezing Rains, Dreadful Wails, Tornados, and Lightning Storms. Burnout is extremely potent with these powersets, Conserve power manages Burnout end crashes. I don't use Cardiac or Ageless with this build. Capped energy resists and 45% ranged defense makes the character quite durable as well.

Oh wow! Thanks so much for this build man. It seems like if I truly wanted to invest for endgame content (as well as be able to go solo sometimes), Storm/Sonic might be the way to go. The synergy with my buddies bots is nice as well.

I have two level 50 /Sonic defenders, a Rad/Sonic and a Pain/Sonic. Both are fun. The Pain/Sonic is not optimal but still contributes effectively on fast-moving teams. With capped S/L and ranged defenses, solid resistances, and steady healing from Soothing Aura, it's very tanky. The Rad/Sonic is probably better for tough AV fights, but it takes time to apply the toggles, so it's not so good for steamrolling teams.

Here's my Pain/Sonic build (a slight variant of a build by Darkir). My Rad/Sonic build is out of date. If you're interested in Rad/Sonic, I'd look at this thread.

Now that you mentioned it, Cold seems like it would be a “cool” choice haha. I don’t see a lot of cold domination around

Last question my dude: some people have mentioned Cold/Sonic as a very powerful Defender that doesn’t get a lot of play. What are your thoughts on cold domination and how it pairs with Sonic?

Cold is definitely an excellent Primary for this. My personal choice is Rad/sonic, and my build can be found in the thread Bastille Boy linked.

 - Cold offers a modest amount more resistance debuffing, a stronger but less consistent end tool, and a more convenient/animation friendly defensive option than Rad (I'm comparing RI to shields here).

 - Rad has a heal, strong -regen, recharge, and some other sundry tools in exchange. I actually really like choking cloud and EMP myself.

Both are mighty fine options! Even if you go cold, the rad/sonic thread above has some great ideas for slotting your secondary.

Thanks for the input! I run a Rad brute, but I’m sure it’s quite different on a Def =P

One benefit of Rad is that you really only need to take five powers, which are all available by level 12: the heal, the two toggle debuffs, the -regen debuff, and Accelerate Metabolism. This makes a Rad/X defender great for exemplaring and for builds that go deep into pool powers.

That is a really good point, can really open up options. What are the must haves for Rad emission?

My opinion on this.

100% silly to skip:

 - Accelerate Metabolism

 - Enervating Field

 - Lingering Radiation

Really nice and I would suggest taking:

 - Radiant Aura

 - Radiation Infection (less useful high levels, godsend lower)

 - Choking Cloud (requires slotting love to shine)

 - EM Pulse (others rate this lower - I like it as a back pocket whoopsie everything is held now power - also basilisk's gaze is primo slot value)

Still good, but easily skipped:

 - Mutation - it's a pretty good rez! Why do you need a Rez?

 - Fallout - This is absurdly powerful, but a little awkward/situational to use. Can be really fun and hilarious.

I prefer cold domination as a corruptor secondary. Compared to defenders it only offers 6% less resistance debuff. Benumb has the same regen debuff and the cold shields really don't need to be maximized in value. As I mentioned in my post about storm summoning, resistance debuffs are at their prime when they have high damage output to leverage their potency, which is why a corruptor can benefit alot more from the set with Fire or Water blasting. This is not to say Cold/Sonic isn't a powerful debuffer, but it is very one dimensional. Storm Summoning shows its value for defenders (compared to the similarities of cold domination) because it offers direct damage tools in Tornado and Lightning Storm (which actually deals more damage per strike on defender mods than corruptor mods) that make up for their lower damage output, and defenders get the flexibility to skip Gale. The endurance discount from vigilance on teams is pretty nice for Storm summoning too, whereas Cold Domination doesn't need it at all with Heat Loss.

Currently on fire.

Thanks for breaking it down! After reading through the powers, this makes complete sense. I could see some fun Fallout uses though 😂

I think there are five required powers:

  • Radiant Aura
  • Enervating Field
  • Radiation Infection
  • Lingering Radiation
  • Accelerate Metabolism

The other four powers aren't useless, but I prefer to take more pool powers.
