question about Sets you buy with merits

Recommended Posts

There are two sets for each class you buy with Merits, If you bought both, would you get both set bonus or only one? I google it and didn't find a straight answer.

If only one, I'm a Tank Fire/rad and both seem good but I guess more protection is better

thanks for any information on it

If this is about ATOs, then you get the bonus from both sets.  The only way you wouldn't get a benefit from a slotted set is from the Rule of 5: If you have more than five instances that same bonus.

it's the ones you buy from the merit vendor in city hall in AP, like Might of the tanker and gauntleted fist for tankers

Yes, those are Archetype Origin enhanceents.  ATOs.

By the way, you'll generally find it more efficient to buy the sets by turning your merits into enhancement converters, selling the enhancement converters on the Auction House, and then buying the sets from the Auction House than to buy them with merits directly.  Or other, more complicated and profitable, schemes to turn merits into inf, but just that basic one will usually be require you to have significantly fewer merits before being able to afford one of the enhancements from those sets.

(You can find the sets in the AH by going to enhancements > attuned > name of your AT.  You want the ones that are not called "superior."  So Stalker's Guile, not Superior Stalker's Guile.  If you're level 50, you can then separately get an Enhancement Catalyst and turn it to Superior.)

You really shouldn’t buy ATO’s with merits. They cost 100 merits each. 100 merits is worth at least 20 million influence and ATO’s cost on average 8 million. You would be better off converting those 1200 merits into 240 million influence. You would have enough to buy all the ATO’s and have plenty left over to buy catalysts to upgrade them.

100 merits = 300 converters, let's say you sell them at 65k each, -10% market fee for AH = 17.5M inf.  So I wouldn't say that 100 merits are worth "at least" 20M inf (though you can get 20M inf from 100 merits by doing more than "turning them to converters and selling the converters on the AH priced to sell immediately"), but Dazl's overall point that they're worth a lot more than the roughly 8M inf that it costs to buy ATOs is solid.

I always feel that I need to speak up when this topic comes up.  Yes, there are more efficient ways to get ATOs (and other things) than spending merits directly on them.  But there is absolutely nothing wrong with spending merits directly.  They are easy to come by, and you can spend them however you want and that's ok.

You can buy winter IO's for 100 merits, and they sell for much more than ATO's. Another method would be to buy enough super packs to get the number of ATO you want, then use your merits to convert the ATO's into what you need.

Some people are merit rich and inf poor because they run lots of TFs and story arcs, but don't want to mess with the market or farm.  For those, buying with merits makes sense.  But it's also appropriate to point out that it's "cheaper" to buy IOs with Inf.  Some don't realize they can use merits to buy converters to either sell or convert IOs and then sell those.

Interesting how someone like yourself who is so market savvy wouldn’t see what a bad deal that is. Merits maybe easy to get, but why waste them? Heck you can make influence faster than merits, you wouldn’t suggest they waste the influence as well.

Now if ATO’s only cost 50 merits (like they should hint hint GM’s) then I could see it.

There is no such thing as a bad deal in HC's economy.  A congenital idiot can make do as well as a once-in-a-lifetime genius.  It's really easy to get by!

100 merits for 1 ATO which is worth 8-10 million or 100 merits for a Winter IO which is worth 15 to 30 million is a bad deal.

Especially since getting Inf is generally easier and quicker to get than Merits.  Even for those players who have Merit farming down to an art, you still can't trade Merits.  And so Inf remains the easier currency to acquire, thanks to the market itself.  Thus using Merits for things which are significantly cheaper with Inf on the Market is generally profoundly wasteful to the players' limited time.

Now if Merits were as easy to come by as Inf, or if some significant changes occurred to the price of items in the Merit Vendor inventories, then we might be able to say "it's fine to use Merits" in good conscience.

As it stands?  It's not worth it (unless the specific individual loathes the market even more than I do, and wants even less to do with it than I.  Which, fair enough).

BUT . . . to the original topic (for @misat) :

Each Archetype has two different Sets of ATOs, each of which can be regular or Superior.  https://hcwiki.cityofheroes.dev/wiki/Archetype_Enhancements

With the exception of a bug related to a particular Mastermind ATO right now, each of these Enhancements is Unique.  That means only one of each individual Enhancement in an ATO Set may be Slotted in a given Build (so, 12 individual ATOs per Archetype in total).

Additionally, the regular and Superior versions of each ATO count as the same Enhancement for the purposes of determining uniqueness BUT NOT for the purposes of getting Set Bonuses.  So, generally, once you've hit level 50, you'll only want to use the Superior versions (with the potential exception for niche Builds, such as on Masterminds attempting to maximize their Recharge bonuses).
