I'm not used to playing Blasters much, so a lil help?

Thanks for taking time to read and hopefully offer some advice/input. As the title says, I'm not used to playing Blasters....I mainly play Tanks. I have, however, played Dual Pistols on a Defender and a Sent, and really like the concept, animations, etc. 

   It seems to me that DP/Martial would be a nice little pairing. Use Speed of Sound to rush in, fire off Hail of Bullets, Dragon's Tail, Eagle's Claw, Speed of Sound, then hop out and mop up with Bullet Rain, Piercing, etc.  I'm also used to shooting for soft capped defenses.

 Am I off base here? How does this look?

That's how I built my first blaster on HC, focusing on typed defenses. The accessibility of winter sets made it easier to do so compared to live. I've since changed my approach.

 

For Melee blasting S/L/R def is enough, most melee range attacks have an S/L component and the rest is essentially ranged. Ranged defense also covers any pure elemental range attacks that mobs throw at you, and those are more common than pure elemental melee attacks. As long as you move you can swing the odds in your favor by minimizing melee retaliation exposure and letting range defense do most of the work. Remember range defense works whether you are 10ft away from a mob or 80ft, as long as they can't swing at you.

 

It's also OK to have less than softcapped S/L defense. Range defense is more important.

 

Next slot attacks as attacks, and take combat jumping way earlier. You are already at a disadvantage when it comes to mezzes, so why delay the ONE immunity you can have for 49 levels, especially as a melee blaster? 

 

You are also missing some FF +rech and -rez proc opportunities.

Your build is much better than mine and I am running 8/3 setting.. 

 

I am going to switch to your build, honestly.. 

 

Smash/Lethal/Range/Energy Defense cap. 

It is a fun build. I love the Ki Push then shooting them in the air, when they go in the air. Sometimes they just fly back.  But still fun.

Don't forget that Suppressive Fire procs really well and is a fast attack.  Also theory-crafters say that you can get a better single-target dps rotation w/o EC.
