I know Snarky a way back had a master of cones build.  Dark and energy are two sets I haven't used much if at all, and Dark's DOTs always bummed me out.  I wanted to see if there was a way to rely on procs to help and to really focus on Cones with the help of Boost Range from the secondary.  Energy seems a bit clickly but the high uptime on energize, Power Boost (+ def), and boost range seem like they could really help.

Anyway, here's a first pass.  I can't figure out how to get more + ranged def (to try to soft-cap before power boost) without sacrifing procs for sets.  Open to help on that front.  Plus perhaps any slotting better for health/stam (though maybe not needed between Energize, Life drain).  No melee attacks taken - meant to be ranged / cone thrower who leaps in for Blackfart.

Anyone tried anything like this and has feedback?

So I played the cone build above on test at +4/8.  Very survivable I presume due to high ish ranged der plus power boosted energize and life drain. Was using the 90 sec clarion that also boosted secondary effects.  Not really sure how PB and Clarion affect energize but seemed good.  The 4 cones fire fast and start to decimate groups, really kind of fun.  The single target isn't bad I mean it's not fire but it didn't feel worse than elec.  Not sure about gloom, might trade it out for dark blast. I know gloom dpa is high but the Dot makes it feel slow.   The biggest issue is the clickiness... Between PB and Boost Range every 20-30 secs plus clarion and build up and aim and energize, always clicking something.  Still was pretty survivable even doing carnies.  Anyone else tried dark or cones (maybe AR)?

Updated build.  Swapped out Gloom for Dark Blast (dpa is about the same, don't like the DOT on Gloom).  Moved some slots and powers around.  Took Dark Embrace earlier for armor vs. the 2 extra dark cones.  Anyone else have any feedback here?

As said above, kind of fun but very clicky.

Umbral Torrent is really good damage as it is and i don't think you need the procs in it but Soul Tenticles and TT do.

On Single targets/AV's I normally do ST+TT and Gloom for the DoT then wail on the target with the bigger hitters.

That is what people fail to realise is you can DoT damage to something while using other powers.

Bind buffs to movement keys.

Do agree though, HC should allow self buffs/buff toggles to be "auto". I understand the argument against damaging powers, but self buffs/toggles would open up so many archtypes.

I've had the same issue with certain power combinations over the years, and once Combat Teleport was released I took to learning some basic bind/macro stuff.

Binds on the movement keys are pretty common for keeping a pair of clicks on Auto.  The following is setup for a /Nin blaster (untested) but is a direct copy from what I use on a /SD scrapper to swap between Hasten and Active Defenses on Auto.

W "+forward$$powexecauto Hasten$$powexecauto Kuji-In Toh"
A "+left$$powexecauto Hasten$$powexecauto Kuji-In Toh"
S "+backward$$powexecauto Kuji-In Toh$$powexecauto Hasten"
D "+right$$powexecauto Kuji-In Toh$$powexecauto Hasten"

Save that to a file (location depends on if you are using Launcher or Tequila) and use /bindloadfile <filename> to load it into game.  If you've saved it to some non-default location, enter the full path.

I suspect you could use the left-right axis for a pair of powers, the forward-back axis for another pair, and tapping the appropriate direction will swap which is on auto. Place them where you can see the cool-down timers easily and make a micro-movement as each comes available.

I also recently adapted one of the rolling bind file techniques to get Aim and Sound Booster on a single button (Rad/Sonic Blaster).  This might also be useful for your setup:

First File:

button5 "powexec_name Aim$$bind_load_file <File Name 2>"

Second File:

button5 "powexec_name Sound Booster$$bind_load_file <File Name 1>"

In game use /bindloadfile to load File 1 to start the process.  Replace "button5" with whatever button or key you want to use for this.  Mash that button to fire and cycle the two powers involved.

There are likely cleaner/better ways to get there I'm sure. 🙂

You see a mousetrap? I see free cheese and a f$%^ing challenge.

The Dark primary has a -ToHit component to it, which helps quite a bit even without enhancing it. YMMV in certain circumstances.

Good point to look at.  6-slotting Overwhelming Force (to give the KD proc and pick up the ranged def bonus) in mids shows average damage of ~140, whereas the proc slotting shows average damage of ~216.  I'll mess around and see.  I could 6-slot artillery for more ranged def but I'd lose the proc.

Here's the latest build. I think I'll swap back to Gloom vs. Dark Blast after testing last night - the damage from Dark Blast is so slow per activation vs. Gloom, even though it has about the same DPA in mids, and even though Gloom ends up corpse-blasting a lot, that I think Gloom will be better long run especially if fired ST at start.  The damage from Abyssal Gaze proc'd is pretty good.  I'm trying to find the best slotting for Life Drain - this one has 3 Thunderstrikes (for ranged def bonus) and 3 damage procs.  It doesn't do much for the heal, but energize seems to cover the gap enough.  I wish I could find a way to fit the Preventive Medicine absob proc in.

I'm finding that End isn't much of an issue with Energize (+ PB) so maybe I'll swap out Panacea in health for the Absorb proc.  It's either that or give up a damage proc for it in Life Drain, which doesn't seem like the right issue (dead enemy > absorb proc).

Per @tidgethere does seem to be a decent impact from the -ToHit debuff, especially when all 3-4 cones get fired off in succession, maybe the PB is also boosting the debuff.   The +def from Vorpal Judgement also seems to be a nice addition to the cone rotation.  But it only hits for about 428 on +4s from what I can see (vs. using the verson of Vorpal that has the bonus damage).

I honestly like this better than my thematic dark/dark/soul.  The buildup on that is way more suited to melee.  But Dark/Psi/Soul has to be the winner    The PBAoEs in Psi pair well with the Dark Nuke.  Joust in Boom!   Then jump out and cone madly! And Psi gets ANOTHER cone lol

From what I'm seeing the benefit of Dark/Energy is the synergy of PB plus the to-hit debuff, plus Dark's cones (and the Soul cones) seem to animate pretty quick and do some nice immob.  /Mental might be interesting but I don't know that the longer-animated PsiScream cone is worth it - I'd probably do FIre/Mental before Dark/Mental, but maybe I'll try it on test.

I have a Psi/mental and i love PsiScream.

It is a clockwork murderer on synapse.

I pair it with Psi Tornado and the damage to mobs is really good.

With Darks Cones i think that would be really interesting.

Here is my Dark/Dark btw

Thanks for sharing your build. You can really see the impact of set bonuses on your resistances and other stats, vs my build where I emphased procs for "moar dmag" in the dark attacks and cones - it's a question of what you're looking for, really.  Nice to see the counterpoint.

Love to see that Master of Cones is still part of the lingo. 🙂 I wrote the I6 AR/NRG Master of Cones guide back in the olden days. /NRG and Boost Range is just the way to go for cones but I am intrigued with what could be done with the primaries and revamped powers we have now.  Keep up the good work!

I have a Dark/Mental that is pretty fun.  I didn't like it for a while and put it on the shelf until @KelvinKole helped me out.  I dont think it is perfect but it made it more enjoyable.  I would be happy to post if desired
