Sigot Posted Friday at 06:25 PM Posted Friday at 06:25 PM (edited) Hello everyone, I was playing some AC and watching AC YouTube videos when I accidentally stumbled across something about Homecoming, needless to say I instantly installed this game and I am very excited to get back into CoH. I'm a dad with very little time to play and I am currently suffering from analysis paralysis. I just want to make one of every kind of character and experiment with all the old builds I used to love back on live when I was a teenager. But I can't do that anymore, IRL and all that jazz. Build Suggestions Id be interested in hearing some suggested builds for someone who will be mostly solo but will group up for an hour two once a week. I love CC and feeling like I fit a niche in the world. So obviously controller or dominator peaks my interest. But tanks are just as fun for me to. Thoughts my friends? ---Edit--- I have decided to try out Tanker (Ice/Titan) Edited Friday at 09:45 PM by Sigot 8
Go0gleplex Posted Friday at 06:38 PM Posted Friday at 06:38 PM As a solo guy myself I'd say a Tanker will be your best bet within your ATs of interest giving you a good mix of solo survival and team utility. I've several tankers that, while currently in the teen levels, are proving to be fairly good at surviving and crunching mobs. Ice/Spine, Rad/Martial, Dark Spine, and Elec/Dark. Though I'm a casual player as well so some of the folks that are more build obsessive than I am may have better ideas. :)

Back on Live I built a lot of scrappers and tanks... But nowadays, unless there's a thematic/headcanon reason for them not to be - my melee types are brutes. Honestly, I don't know that I can articulate beyond "that extra damage meter can be addicting/exhilarating". It gamifies the game if that makes the slightest amount of sense. But I am still interested in controller/dom at some point. 1

I understand the demands on time. I've had new ones added to me these last 8 months. I too love controllers and dominators. The challenge is that they're more team-oriented the first 20 or so levels until the pets start showing up in the options list. There's plenty of ways to compensate for that these days, however: running multiple team Death From Below (DFB) trials and later Drowing In Blood (DIB) trials to get you to the right levels quickly. Both can be completed in 20 minutes or so depending on the team skill level. I'd mention Positron 1 and 2 task forces, which, with a good team can be done nearly as fast, but it depends on the team skill and goals. These could drag out to the end of your available play time. The Synapse Task Force definitely could. For solo work when coming back into the game after a long time, I'd recommend checking out ice powers regardless of the archetype. These slow or even freeze your opponents buying you time. Some of these show up in sets that are not primarily ice, such as the storm set. Personally, I've often said that I love the Illusion/Storm controller, as the character develops into a Swiss Army Knife able to react to most any need. It does have AoE abilities with ice elements and can generate multiple pets to help make quick work of those crowds you've slowed. Fire/ice is a great solo combo as well: ice for control, fire for lots of damage over time. Edited Friday at 09:56 PM by Techwright Spelling. Oops. 2

Sigot Posted Friday at 07:40 PM Author Posted Friday at 07:40 PM Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and guidance. I'm definitely looking forward to building out my Ice/??? Tanker tomorrow morning. I agree with ZemX, learn the game before playing a more challenging roll. I'll be there crafting my controller in the background as I go. 😁

I've rewritten it to try to improve my comment. Apologies for any confusion caused. Are you taking Ice for the defensive or offensive ability? I assume defensive due to the primary powers position in your comment. If otherwise, let me just point out that the fire defense, Fire Aura, for the "???" in your comment, it is a bit different. While it adds damage along with the defense, it also requires player intervention to boost the knockback protection. Otherwise, the tank/brute/scrapper may be tough enough to survive the harder hits, but they stand a good chance of being tossed around. For some guidance on what might work for knockback mitigation please see the contributions in this thread: Edited Friday at 10:52 PM by Techwright Clarified wording

As for solo builds, I tend to lean toward sentinels or scrappers; If you want something with, IMHO, a lot of utility, I'd start with a dual-pistols/ninjitsu sentinel or a katana/ninjitsu scrapper. Both are solid, very solo-friendly builds that can also do well on a team. If you're leaning toward something a bit more on the control side, may I suggest a gravity/forcefield controller - it may seem like force field focuses mainly on ally-only buffs, (and it has a few), but it will also benefit you via dispersion bubble and personal force field. The former is important because it grants you some status protection, which is harder to come by for a controller. Alternatively, the sonic secondary set also provides some self-status protection AND some enemy debuffs, but the defense from force field is, IMO, better than the damage resistance from sonic, for a controller. The gravity primary is also a bit heavier on the direct damage and easy to utilize the "containment" mechanic, along with its own "impact" mechanic, for even more damage...

I'd say rounding up and ceremonially executing a group of people just to set an example makes them a lot more than "kind of jerks". There are a few leaders in villain groups for which I can have a moment of sympathy: "so much squandered potential". Not the Petrovic family. It's monsters like that which tempt me to turn vigilante.
