Frist, Not every mode is for every game.

It works fine for CoH, no idea why you'd suggest this.

I'm not saying a Hardcore mode is universally bad. As we've established, there are games where it is not only possible, but popular. Hell, I've done a Pokemon Nuzlock run myself. But you wouldn't implement that in, say, Dark Souls. Because dying is part of that game. You pretty much have to die to get out of the tutorial. Like it or not, a core part of the CoH game loop is recovering from failure and trying again. It's pretty much baked in. Something being popular doesn't make it right in every instance. Pornography is very popular, but I wouldn't want it in CoH either, because it would be a tonal and thematic mismatch.

Took five seconds to find 100s of them, you should probably do any amount of research before making claims.

( I think you're just bad at Dark souls)

Second, lets not mistake people wanting to watch something with people wanting to do something. Watching somebody try and fail to get through all of Star Wars The Old Republic on one life sounds entertaining! But what percentage of people watching end up playing the game, and what percentage of that percentage end up attempting the same thing? I like watching boxing, but I don't want to get punched in the head myself.

Many many game studios actively seek out streamers as a form of advertising, this method is backed by increases in player counts/store subscriptions/meal plans/whatever. You're objectively incorrect. This also wasn't the point though, I wasn't saying we should add it because of Twitch. Like Arcane said, the people on twitch are often worth avoiding. I mentioned to someone who said no one was interested in it that it was currently the most popular thing happening in another MMO via twitch. Lets stop this out of context narrative right there'

Finally, I am so very tired of people saying "well you're not the developers!" when people say they don't like their idea. If you're so set that the forums are bad and toxic and we hate everything, well, don't let the door hit you on your way out. To paraphrase the Scorpion and the Toad "You knew I was a Grognard when you got here."

I'm more tired of people acting like they have the final say and can be toxic and speak down to people just trying to express ideas they think would be cool to see. You're not a developer and your egos preventing you from just admitting that is crazy. Whats more is you just lie? Nobody is saying to anyone who expresses they don't like an idea and nothing more that they aren't developers. People who have no background in game development or any technical background often making claims something cannot be done, or isn't possible are the ones being told. Don't gaslight.

Also, telling people to LEAVE THE FORUMS because they disagree with you is fucking wild. Peak toxic behavior.

Depends on what it entails.  There's a lot of different ways to do the HC version as people have outlined.

And on repeat: This has been done (I've run a few chars up to 50 this way) and there are different styles to do it with.   We don't need a separate server to do this.

Posted (edited)

I forgot entirely we have something closeish already with PvP warriors or w/e, a checkbox enabling different rulesets.

A checkbox at creation would be ideal, though i do worry about allowing them to join TF's with non-HC people and dying in it and making the TF be down a person. I think you'd have to not allow them to team with non-HC players. (at least for TF's)

Or maybe if they die, the HC ends but they're allowed to keep playing the toon if they like. Would also remove the danger of making a TF be down a person.

It's not just adding a checkbox to character creation to force 'Ironman' mode; you can already do that yourself, just by deleting the character at the first defeat. What the OP is asking for is a dedicated server, with all of the associated costs, maintenance overhead, and code base changes, to enforce Ironman mode on everyone playing on that server, predicated on the belief that, since hardcore servers have been established for other games, it would be good, desirable, and popular on Homecoming, and the people arguing against it are just naysaying outliers that don't represent the actual playerbase.

I'm sure OP would be fine with a checkbox too, What he wants is pre-established enforced rules to prevent cheating in the community. Not every suggestion has to always be the initial ask, it can be discussed and brainstormed into better and easier ways to include things, the true actual purpose of these forums.

I misread your last part there, my bad. removed it 😞

We're still glossing over all of the backend coding work that would be required behind making that checkbox actually DO anything though, right?
And all of the lore and power selection bits that would need tweaked for the gameplay experience to remain even remotely sane, right?
Right?
Right.
Never mind then, carry on...

"Developers would need to develop to create this feature"

You don't have to change lore or power selections or anything. It's just an optional experience, it doesn't need to tie into the story.

I would wager about 99.9% of suggestions on these forums would require some amount of work, yes.

I'm guessing that somebody thinks that there is a market for a gasoline-powered CPAP, but that doesn't mean it is going to come to market, nor that otehr folks can't point out why it would be a bad investment to try to bring one to market.

You're being really disingenuous with that comparison. This isn't an outlandish idea that is a new concept.

If the devs get some data that a lot of players want this, they can have at it.

I'd bet though that they won't find that a lot of players want this.

But it's up to them to decide what they want to do or build.

As for the meta argument on suggestions: We can make 1000 suggestions. Don't expect them to implement or respond to even one. I'm okay with that, sepcially since this is a passion project for them. They should build or create what they like.

So far what they've built or added to COH I've agreed with 95% of the time. I trust their judgement over anyone posting on these forums.

Did I miss the post in this thread that offered genuine numbers, budgets and costs to justify the size of this hill you seem to want to die on?

Maybe I have accidentally gotten developer privileges, because otherwise I'm seeing some pretty weak suggestions that probably should have been kept private if they don't want public criticism.

This routine again ok here we go again-

Nobody said you can't give criticism, but you know what isn't criticism?  Most of the replies in this thread. It's mostly just trashing the idea, pretending they've never heard of hardcore in an MMO setting before and therefor it shouldn't happen, and a lot of wild assumptions on why this cannot possible be done. Barely is there at any point in this thread criticism of any actual idea presented. It's mostly just people, like you, dismissing the way someone else enjoys the game as a waste of developer time or stupid.

Here's a idea for you, you don't like an optional feature? Don't fucking do it.

IMO this analogy is pretty spot on.

Gasoline-powered devices certainly exist. They're useful. And rather popular. And people even enjoy watching streaming media about others using them.
CPAP machines are a very niche product and their user base is a very specific demographic of people.

So: TERRIFIC IDEA
In order to make the leading brand of CPAP machines more popular, lets strap a gasoline engine to it and then stream the results on Twitch.

(DAMMIT ALL YOU SILLY CPAP DEVICE USERS WHY CAN'T YOU SEE THIS IS THE FUTURE AND EVERYONE WOULD LOVE IT YOU'RE ALL WRONG AND TOXIC AND I SHALL NOT BE DETERED BY YOUR WEIGHT OF OPINION, EVIDENCE OF PRIOR FAILURES, COST-BENEFIT DISPARITY DISPLAYS OR SO-CALLED COMMON SENSE!)

The "criticism" of the idea started in the third post in the thread.
And the first two posts were the OP.

I'll make one final attempt to shift it back to the idea. and ignore @Maelwys entirely.

So far we've had two ideas thrown out there as versions of the hardcore concept.

  • Its own server
  • A checkbox like temporal warrior on every server

I personally like either, but think a checkbox like temporal would be ideal.

A Hardcore server/checkbox would likely need to have

  • Email system disabled
  • Trading with other players disabled
  • Auction house disabled
  • Character removed from HardCore on death
  • possibly something to show this character is in HC, maybe like the roleplaying status

Possible rewards for doing so was suggested

  • A badge

Then it isn't Hardcore/Iron Man. The character shouldn't get to simply continue on after being defeated. That is not what Hard Core/Iron Man is about. The character gets removed from the game. No time to recover any salvage, inspirations, recipes, or inf'. Immediately dropped from the game and deleted from the server.

Edited to correct a question mark to a slash. And again to correct "Hard Core" to "Hardcore".

Both styles exist, sometimes it lets you just move the character to a different server and keep it. I imagine with how CoH is and how characters made, It'll likely be a nice option to let people just keep the toon if they want to. Since they're not gaining anything unfairly, no increases in rewards or anything i don't see much of a reason we couldn't let that happen.

My personal preference would be keeping, just not getting the badge unless you reached 50. or whatever it may be. If not, so be it.

Perma deletion is the traditional style, so i would understand if they did do hardcore them choosing that route.

Every player can already set themselves up to play the way that has been described as "hardcore", so why the demand for all this extra effort?

It's not like a YT viewer knows if there was really ice water in those "ice bucket challenges".
