• ISSUE:  CHAT BOX LOWER HALF GETS STUCK CLOSED SHOWING ONLY A SINGLE LINE OF TEXT.
• SUGGEST PUTTING A "LOCK" ON THE CHAT BOX SIMILAR TO THE "LOCK" ON THE 'POWERS' WHERE AN ERRANT CLICK CANNOT MESS IT UP.
• CURRENT FIXES SUCK WHEN TRYING TO APPLY THEM WHEN LEADING A TEAM/LEAGUE OR JUST HAVING A NORMAL CONVERSATION.

This little arrow on the right side of the Chat window collapses it down to just the field where you input chat.

The chat UI has always been just a bit wonky. I can't count how many times I've had to answer the question 'My split chat box disappeared' with 'Drag the tab back into the middle. It won't look right until you let go.'

 

I'd personally like to see a reworking of the chat UI in general to fix this and other issues, but, as a friend put it, UI work is MUCH harder than it looks. CoH doesn't use a GUI toolkit, either. so anything it doesn't already provide, you have to somehow hack in or repurpose... which is why our difficulty settings are in the emotes menu.

You can also click on and hold the Chat tab (the green tab in the image above) and drag if back up to the middle or wherever you're comfortable with. I've had it happen on occasion where the Tab is literally right above the text input line and don't remember how it got there, but yeah it's easy to grab and move around.

I'm pretty sure

 

/wdwsave

 

will position your windows exactly as you like them and then

 

/wdwload

 

will restore them to that. If you ever have wonkiness (other than accidentally hitting the U key mid-battle) then try it.

 

I also combine those slash commands with

 

/optionsave (or /optsave) and their /optload equivalents as well as /bindsave and /chatsave

Self-inflicted or not, it's kind of like an intersection where a lot of accidents occur. Does the city put in a traffic light to help mitigate this, or just say "User error" and let them keep happening? Granted, just like with most municipalities, resources are scarce. We'll just have to let the powers that be decide what's the best use of their time.

• SO, IF ANYONE RUNS ADDITIONAL "CHANNEL TABS" ON THE LOWER HALF OF THE CHAT POP-UP SCREEN, AND THIS HAPPENS, ONE CANNOT EVEN SEE WHAT THEY ARE TYPING BECAUSE IT IS OVERLAID WITH THESE "CHANNEL TABS."
• NO ARROW, OPTIONS/GRAPHICS RESET OR WHATEVER FIXES THIS.
• LOGGING COMPLETELY OFF AND ON DOES NOT FIX IT, (SOMETIMES IT DOES IF YOU WAIT 30 SECONDS).
• THE ONLY FIX I KNOW IS TO CLICK ON A "CHANNEL TAB" ON THE LOWER 1/2 AND DRAG IT IN THE UP DIRECTION.  USUALLY THIS RESTORES THE CHAT WINDOW.
• ...THIS IS DIFFICULT TO DO AT TIMES WHEN ACTUALLY PLAYING, AND AGGRIVATING TO DO AT OTHER TIMES.

The solution to this issue is saving the Chat config ("/chatsave").  Because the Chat config stores where the split line is in the main chat window.

 

Reloading that saved Chat config ("/chatload") will reset the Chat config as it was saved.

 

Important note: Any Chat Tabs with a default Global channel will have no default channel.  Edit each such Chat Tab to set a default channel.

That arrow is useful when I want to use the windows Snip function to get a targeted screenshot with PrntScrn or get the chat window out of my way when I'm just faffing about.

 

The solution is in the same spot on the minimized chat window:

 

 

See the little up arrow on the right side? Click it.

 

Congratulations! You now know how to use the UI.

 

Now if you're talking about this issue:

 

 

This is because you have intentionally shrunk the window by grabbing the top line and dragging it down.

 

Grab the top line and drag it back up.

 

Then stop grabbing the top line and dragging it down. If you notice your chat-window is changing shape while you're holding down the left mouse button, move the mouse back up, then release the left mouse button.

 

Again, this is just how you use the UI.
