I was taking the Montague mission in the Library, and noticed, for the first time, (sad but true), Infurno, who's listed as a tribute to a player. That's all. Neither Wiki nor her character info lists who this player was, or why they were given this honor. I think that's very sad! If someone is given an honor like that, I think it should be part of that to say why it was given, at the very least!  Also, I think that here on the forums, perhaps in Gone but not Forgotten, there should be a pinned list of who is immortalized, where, and why.

I agree with more information needed on the character. But this is Infurno. RIP.

Thanks. I just think it would be nice to have that info out there. Honoring those who gave much to the game is something I feel has been uniquely COH, and I for one think it's an awesome thing to do.

Perhaps what would be great would be a "Memorial Wall" somewhere in neutral territory, with clickable plaques. These could be a description of our fallen comrade, their main characters and the location of their avatar in game and why that is significant to their story.

That could even become a "Memorial Walk" where interested parties could visit all the avatar locations. (No badge, just for its own sake)

Right. Meant in the game, and I did look Infurno up on Wiki to see, and it did not tell me more than the bio on the character did.  I would like to see information on why they are there, what their contributions were. I did see the announcement of GM Cyclone's untimely death, but did not know to connect the character with the person. If they're going to be honored, it's just nice to know why, imo. (I have np with them being honored, in fact I think it's great, tho this topic has apparently been covered before and there is policy I hadn't known about, so not going to delve into the whole topic of memorials. Just would like more info on the ones that are there.)

I'm not opposed to the idea, but my concern with making an official memorial site is that something large-scale would invite active submissions. Any kind of public display with direct, Homecoming-marked approval would have folks petitioning the devs for their spouse/parent/friend/etc. to be given a spot, and then getting upset when it's not provided. Including more readily identifiable information about the tribute characters already in-game could exacerbate that, especially if any players had prior disagreements with that person. I doubt any friends or family who knew the tribute characters' players would enjoy seeing that person's post history scoured for objectionable comments or some ancient argument from the Live era dredged up when someone else thinks 'why'd they get a tribute and not my friend?'

Admittedly, that is extremely cynical and HC's community is largely better than that - especially for these kinds of things - but also the current era of the internet has well documented behavioral problems. It's certainly possible any official memorial would be treated as respectfully as the majority of the in-game gatherings usually are, but keeping the tributes as is - 'they're now part of the city' and done solely at Homecoming's discretion - feels like the avenue with less drama.

That said, having the tribute NPCs themselves actually marked as memorials in-game would be a nice addition/in-between, since there's nothing in their bio sections about that. Like @Dacy posted, that way there's some kind of indication to their purpose but done in a way that doesn't detract from or overshadow the tribute itself. The players who knew them already know and the players who didn't have the purpose made clear, so if someone does want to know more about the player behind that character they have the context to actually come to the forums or the wiki.

Last I recall, the discussions revolving around what to do to memorialize players that had passed on was that HC would not be adding any new memorials for players outside of the HC team.  One idea that was floated about was to utilize the existing hologram tech (like the new badge tracker in Pocket D) to create a hologram object that could be placed inside a base.  This would allow players to create their own memorials how they wanted instead of HC getting involved.  Going the hologram route sounded like a not insignificant challenge being that it would involve storing costume data inside the base code, so do not have any illusions or expectations that it will appear in the next issue, if ever.  It was just one idea that was suggested and discussed.  I do not think HC will entertain the idea of adding in memorial characters for anyone other than people involved in coding and maintaining the game.

Interesting. How would a player know this if they didn't read the forum or the Wiki?

No idea.  I was merely pointing out that some information is available.

Memorial walls and mausoleums have previously been discussed. And a major problem with that is its ever growing nature. Especially with a largely older player base (to the best of my knowledge). That is why the Fallen but not Forgotten forum page works but an in game tribute really can't. Yes, some already have in game tributes to them and I don't remember the specifics for that particular argument, but there is only so much available space in the game and an in game memorial would wind up being an entire zone. Which would need to be constantly updated for new deaths. And that is an excessive amount of work for a paid development team, let alone volunteers doing development work in their off-time. (Edit: And especially if there are clickable plaques to read for each and every one of them. Then add in priority of placement for rapid access, and things get ugly real fast.)

Edited to add "in their off-time".

I think it's better for the tribute characters to remain "in character" and not talk about the real life person.  Breaks immersion.

But I have no problem with the forum list, wiki, or anything else out-of-game that talks about the player beyond the character.

I'm not too familiar with SG base building, but how difficult would it be to add an interactable plaque item whose text would be customizable by the base builder?  Then, a player could create and share a public base code and include such a plaque, (the text would still have to abide by any ToS/CoC, to avoid its misuse)...

What about a link on the Bio to a section here detailing the player?

That's in between, but I'd still lean no.  That's just one bug's opinion.

There are already letters, numbers and some symbols in the editor as objects for players to create plaques or memorial walls.  People have been using these objects to make all sorts of signage and branding.  It is cumbersome and tedious to place each letter one by one, but it can be done.  Base access codes can be shared publicly so anyone outside the SG can visit.

Well ok.  Though of the Memorial PCs currently around some have no bio at all.  So if anybody knew them as those characters perhaps that in game information could be given to the Devs to add. Curupira for instance is one.
