A mind / earth / leviathan build - Feedback welcomed
EnjoyTheJourney replied to EnjoyTheJourney's topic in Dominator
Thank you both for your feedback. I'll ponder things and test some things out over the next several days; at least a few tweaks are likely, based on the ideas given here. -
Below is the build I'm running for my mind / earth dom. It's a lot of fun to play. This build tends to work best on teams, but it can do well solo in most higher difficulty content. Water spout has good uptime and it helps noticeably by cc'ing and damaging mobs. A key below-the-radar part of how sustain works for this build lies in rotating barrier and unleash potential (boosted by power up), as well as mixing in melee core when possible*. There are some periods in which none of those are up, and in those times there is a higher chance of needing to hibernate briefly, if big damage gets taken, until key powers recharge. * Many thanks are due to Mezmera for pointing out how this can be done. It helps survivability quite a bit. The build exemps very well for all content for which terrify can be used. It will exemp reasonably well to even lower levels than when terrify is available. But, controls won't be as "dominating" and AOE contributions will be significantly lower compared to when terrify is available. No build is perfect and others have a very good chance of spotting outright errors or potentially better tradeoffs that can be made. Feedback is welcome and appreciated. As always, if the build here helps somebody else, then that's a highly welcome outcome. Circling back to the OP, and speaking in favor of mind control, mass hypnosis is a helpful tool for minimizing possible over-aggro. This can be done by using mass hypnosis on a nearby spawn that's uncomfortably close to the one the team is fighting, or about to fight. Given that it can affect up to 16 mobs over a wide area, it generates no aggro, and its recharge time tends to be short when IO'd up, it's an excellent choice for that purpose. When teams are defeating everything in seconds that level of aggro control makes no difference. But, when dealing with harder content and/or to help squishier teammates it's a tool readily available to a mind dom that doesn't have a ready equivalent in all other control sets.
-
Hey there, Mez & Vol. When we do hardcore dom runs we all know it's my job to serve as vengeance bait. Neither of you are allowed to take that role away from me. You have different playstyles, which help to inform your different build preferences. But, you're both really good players and I learn a lot from teaming with both of you.

A proc'd up terrify does about 300 damage and is available about every 15 seconds, with decent recharge. It's classified as "soft control", but its DPS makes it a good AOE for damage purposes for mind doms. Many mobs won't even attempt to return fire when it hits them before they aggro onto the mind dom; they'll just take damage, freeze in place, and shiver with fright. Terrify does just fine as an opener on a mind dom in most settings, when used with care. Mass hypnosis is even safer to use, given how it generates no aggro, and it has roughly similar availability as terrify. With both total domination and mass confusion recharging in about a minute, or a bit more, mind doms tend to have an AOE "spawn shutdown" skill ready for most situations.

As per the subject line, Mids character planner shows that Hami-Os can be used for the pet power buff skills (lvl 6, lvl 32). If that's true, and if both parts of the Hami-O function normally, then at least for demons it's tempting to put in Ribosome exposures to boost resistances and endurance reduction. If somebody has play-tested this and found it doesn't work, well, then that's an option better crossed off the list. Thank you in advance for any feedback.

Ice mastery isn't always the best mastery. Preferred content and build goals figure into what makes a given mastery a good choice for a particular build. If somebody wants upper end challenges (801 content, max notoriety with challenge settings on TFs such as inspirations disabled, enemies buffed, players debuffed, etc), then what a mastery adds to survivability starts to matter more. Then papering over weaknesses with inspirations becomes more difficult, or downright impossible with inspirations disabled. Masteries that boost resists generally seem to help more in the most difficult content, for example. Leviathan is a bit of a sleeper mastery choice. Water spout debuffs and cc's mobs, plus it provides a place for an achilles heel -res proc. Hibernate is an excellent "uh oh" button. It doesn't add as much to damage as soul mastery, though, and so it's probably a better choice for primary / secondary combinations that already have excellent damage. The further one moves away from high difficulty play, and the closer one moves to speed runs at low notoriety levels, then the less any given mastery matters except for how much it multiplies team damage. Speed runs at +0 or +1 difficulty seem to play to ice mastery's strengths, for example.

In short, the T9 and the carefully timed juggling / stacking of other powers are all essential to making a build work. The other key takeaway is that I don't know how the scaling works for where the softcap ends up being, depending on the level gap between characters and mobs. Even after re-reading the "purple patch" paragonwiki page, which did help for some issues, there is still some fogginess in my understanding of how level differences affect the interactions between defense rating and to hit values. I'll study that further sometime in the next day or so. Thank you very much for your feedback.

Here's a variation on the build you've suggested, with a different secondary. DDR is fairly well handled. A combination of rehabilitating circuit and absorb helps to handle the healing when attacks land, as long as the sentinel is on a team. Scaling resists and rune of protection are available if heavy damage seems headed this sentinel's way. The build offers 3 AOE attacks and 3 single target attacks. This is quite likely because of limited experience in 801 on my part. But, this build does not incorporate the secondary T9. If it is an essential pick then it could be fitted into the build. It'll be interesting to hear just how far off the mark this build might be, in feedback. Quick update: This warshade is now level 50 and will have all T3 incarnates quite soon. The build has worked out very well overall. Redlynne's suggested slotting for both gravitic emanation and gravity well have worked out *very* well; the ability to instantly hold a boss and the +recharge and immobilization from gravitic emanation change the way the build plays. The new starless step quickly gets my warshade into the melee fray, which helps as well. A small number of tweaks were made to the above build, as follows: Weaken resolve was moved earlier to improve the -res capabilities to 52%-ish for any TF from a Yin on up. Earlier TFs are mostly not that dangerous anyways, in general, and so having earlier access to a power that improves damage is preferable to taking weave earlier. Taking twilight shield later does make handling quants in early TFs more challenging, but that's OK. Phantom radial superior ally was taken for the lovely empathy buffs provided, along with the healing. They help both sustain and DPS, in the end. Storm radial is also tempting, though. Thank you for your post. It shook lose some overly narrow thinking on my part about how to do some of the slotting. Also, after carefully considering your build and Redlynne's advice about FF procs, the build below should function better than the previous iteration. Switching slotting in eclipse brings melee defense to a higher total, which is good. The build is far from cheap, as a caveat, but it's doable. The following is the result of a more careful review of others' work (particularly ideas from Redlynne, who is an excellent source of thoughtful build ideas and technical information). The following build relies on more umbral primary and secondary powers and on more of the usual pool powers. Toggles would not all be running at the same time. Recharge is quite a bit higher, allowing for a different alpha incarnate pick. Melee defense is in the mid-30s and ranged defense is in the low 20s, without vengeance engaged and without team buffs. Four targets for eclipse are sufficient to max all resistances without switching on any resistance toggles. Still, there is an option to switch on gravity shield, tough, and/or twilight shield in cases where eclipse only has a single target left (ie: especially for drawn out AV fights) or when eclipse has either misfired entirely or has for some other reason run out. The build above didn't work out well when testing on the beta server. DPA and DPS weren't in a good enough place. Instead, the build was modified as below. The build below has more damage and seems to function noticeably better. Also, ebon eye became the home of a key AT IO that helps to get resistances to a better place. I'm currently leveling the build below, given that incarnates for my current warshade are too far down a path that doesn't match the planned build. It'll be interesting to see how well he comes together. Below is a hopefully effective build for a robotic character that relies on technology to carry out its missions. Feedback is welcome and appreciated. As a bit more explanation, the mastery pet is a mule for pet IOs intended to help the trap pets last longer when they're under fire from strong mobs. Also, hopefully between the -res in powers and in procs, plus the heavy amount of -regen, this build would help teams quite a bit. Nature manipulation could make sense for quite a few backstories. Depending on the build you might have the first "cowtroller" in the game. :) (I'll show myself out ...) If you wanted a bit of a dark backstory you could pick the dark secondary; this cow gained powers from negative energy exposure or by having too many chemicals pumped into them, or something like that.

Below is a melee-centric human only warshade build. The build goals were to not rely on corpses to stay upright and to use extractions to take DPS to a better place, when that is possible. It should play like a kind of tanktroller that relies on healing from essence drain and stygian circle, plus the two long recharge powers (unrelenting and unleash potential), to patch the limitations in other defenses. This build would be primarily designed for teaming. A few caveats apply. Neither the ST nor the AOE attack chains are likely to be smooth. The ST attack chain has low DPA and DPS. The AOE is a nuke (42 second cooldown, with T4 alpha incarnate) and another PbAOE on a 33ish second coodown, plus 2 cones, with the cones being a bit of work to use to best effect while in melee. Also, defeated foes are still valuable, even if (perhaps, in most situations) not essential because extractions are the key to improving DPS. I also don't know if provoke can function well enough to take aggro from extractions (and teammates, perhaps) with just the base slot in place. On a more positive note, the procs in gravitic emanation and the nuke give this build decent burst damage, along with the judgment incarnate. Sun mire is near perma and the damage boost for each teammate type that boosts damage stacks up quickly to noticeable levels. Thus, although the damage ceiling isn't nearly as high on this build as it is for scrappers or other damage ATs (not by a long shot, at least not without pets up), there are enough self buffs to damage in play (and dark sustenance buffs) to have a fairly high damage floor. Also, as long as the pets can be kept alive overall DPS should be in a decent place. It would be nice to fit in inky aspect. But, it's not easy to pick a power to remove to make way for it. Storm is a fun set to play. There is a key caveat, though, which is teammates will tend to appreciate if you put knockback-knockdown IOs into key powers (gale if you use it, tornado, and potentially even lightning storm). Both nado and lightning storm do noticeably more damage once they have a version of this IO in them (LS stops knocking things out of range, so it does more damage, and nado keeps right on grinding away at things more consistently). Sudden acceleration has a cheaper version of this IO, about 2 million each, and the overwhelming force (universal damage set) also has one (more expensive, about 10 million inf). There are multiple good storm builds on the forums that you can check out. Good luck!

There is another thread with earth assault as a key focus on this first page. I happened to make the first post in it and by all means feel free to look over what I've posted. But, I'd especially recommend paying close attention to the posts by oedipus_tex as there is a lot of helpful information in them to help you select from among earth assault powers and to slot them well. Good luck with your dom!

I've noticed that putting in the bombardment chance for fire damage makes mids report incorrect damage totals. So, the cloud senses proc was essentially a workaround aimed at trying to get a truer picture of the damage done, even if the exact IOs in the power couldn't be the same. The first impression is understandably confusing, granted.

Thank you once again for very detailed and thoughtful feedback. I hadn't thought very carefully about how to put the dominator AT IOs to their best use, which was particularly helpful to think more carefully about. There are multiple other changes influenced by your earlier post. For the build below mass hypnosis holds the ascendancy AT IOs. Since it can be cast about every 14 seconds it will be available quite often. That allows the damage for terrify to be essentially quadrupled, to about 330 damage, which keeps it as a 16 second recharge mini-nuke that pushes up DPA for AOE attacks. Two key tradeoffs are that proccing the damage boost from mass hypnosis doesn't do any damage (losing 2 seconds of DPS, albeit while sleeping a lot of nearby mobs while in melee) and that defense totals are still noticeably short of what you've put together with your build further above. Terrify has a very wide and deep cone, and so to make it work in melee the easiest solution is to jump straight up and fire it down on a target being attacked in melee. That won't work in all situations, of course, but it helps to make it more useful even when not fighting at range. I'm interested in making a mind control character work, which this one hopefully will. I have another thematic dominator in the planning stages, which will be a fire / psi dom. So, the earth/psy template you've provided will undoubtedly end up being helpful for that character; thank you for taking the time to post that as well. Thank you for the thoughtful feedback. Expanding the character concept to incorporate limited power over water is still close enough to the original idea to work. This change leads to swapping destiny to ageless core (instead of barrier), as endurance might be hard to manage any other way. It's still functionally a good tradeoff for two key reasons. First, debuffs make a big difference to character effectiveness and primal force mastery doesn't offer as many chances to put debuffs into the build. Second, setting aside incarnates leviathan produces a stronger and more survivable character than primal forces can. In terms of function, synergies between mind and earth are fairly good. Mind control becomes noticeably more effective as recharge increases and earth assault offers multiple chances for force feedback +recharge procs. Earth control loves melee for its hard hitting single target attacks and mind control offers 3 radial, 16 target AOE controls that can be easily applied while in melee, two of which generate no aggro. Dominate ends up being the filler when the harder hitting ST attacks are still on cooldown, making for a hard hitting ST attack chain that has mez in every attack. Also, the DPA for earth assault AOE attacks is not very good. But, terrify in mind control offers a mini-nuke on a 16 second cooldown in the build below and it helps to significantly improve AOE DPA beyond what earth assault can offer. It is true that dark mastery offers very(!) good defensive synergy with earth assault. Plus, its pets add noticeably to DPS and to aggro control. It is a very reasonable pick, as is earth / psy. But, I was wanting to find a thematic and functionally workable build for mind control; mind control was my first controller back on live and I've always had a soft spot for it.
