  1. Thank you all for your responses. It seems clear that there is room for a variety of reasonable approaches to slotting up a character. And, when and how to use attunements and boosts is becoming quite a bit more clear thanks to posts here and to resources mentioned here. I went ahead and IO'd up my stalker as per the build given in the OP. I've run him through a speed ITF and a speed Yin, a Tin / Pex TF duo, +4x8 Maria Jenkins arc missions, two BAFs, a solo PI +4x8 radio, and sundry other challenges. I wanted to see his limits so I would fairly frequently split off from the team and try to solo +4x8 content. He solo'd fine, he does a ton of damage, and he hasn't died once yet since being IO'd up^. There very well may be better builds out there. But, the adapted version of SwitchFade's build seems to work well enough, at least for the content I've tried thus far. ^ He has had several close calls, including in the Tin / Pex TF duo. But, his EA heal and his Rebirth destiny incarnate power have ended up being very helpful.
  2. I have a staff / EA stalker that I love playing and that I would like to IO out for both endgame play and for examplar-ing (mostly TFs, sometimes just to game with friends). For this build I'm leaning heavily on posts made by SwitchFade in a DB / EA build request thread, adapting the "DB" primary to a staff primary. I'm still quite new to IOs. I've read a fair amount, but I'm still in a bit of a state of information overload. So, when to attune and when to boost, and what role enhancement catalysts play in the process is still not yet quite clear. There may be other very important topics about IOs that I don't yet understand very well, either, or perhaps don't even know about. So, hopefully this sample build will help toward learning how to build characters "on the fly", so they can be IO'd up as they level up, as well as being effective in endgame. The order in which slots are taken is important because set bonuses aren't available until there are enough slots to accept the IOs that provide the bonuses. If I'm making mistakes in the order in which powers are slotted, then I'm hoping to learn about that. I'll buy specialty IOs such as the +3% global defense IOs in kinetic dampening) at relatively low levels, so the bonuses are available even when exemplared down quite low. My initial plan / goal is to buy attuned IOs for basically everything. Can I boost pretty much everything as well, or are attuning and boosting somehow not complementary to each other? I don't see anything to catalyze other than the stalker sets. Feedback would be much appreciated. The following version is even better because a place for a force feedback proc has been found and key defense percentages are higher (especially AOE and fire / cold defenses, and also fire / cold resists, which is helpful). The drawback is less damage in the single target hold and a small drop in a few other defenses. Accuracy is a bit lower than for other powers for telekinetic thrust, as well, but it should still be in a reasonable place overall. I'll probably need Ageless (Destiny incarnate) to make this work, either way. But, I'm fine with that.   4. I dropped the medicine pool and added maneuvers and ripper instead. Ripper can fit in a force feedback proc, which is helpful. And, of course defenses become a bit better overall.   5. Thank you for your feedback! After getting feedback on a blaster build, I did a bit of re-thinking and decided to put more emphasis on typed defenses. The build still has permadom, but now has 46.8% smash / lethal defenses, 40.9% fire / cold defenses, and 35% energy / negative energy defenses. Positional defenses will probably only matter for psionic attacks (psi defense is 19.1%) and they are fairly well developed as well (27.8% for melee is the lowest, ranged and AOE are close to 36% each). The main drawback with the earlier build is that after a bit more experience playing the build it's clear that I'd like to play in melee most of the time to maximize psychic shockwave and drain psyche, as well as the quick animating single target melee attacks. So, in the end ranged defense is not as high a priority as it was earlier for me. Also, with a greater emphasis on fighting in melee range, the case for incorporating the snipe becomes weaker. One key improvement over the earlier build is endurance management, as in this revised build arctic air costs a *lot* less endurance to run. Perhaps having just one performance shifter +end IO is a bit easier to manage this way. One small purple inspiration will softcap all typed defenses but psionic and all positional defenses but melee, so even with zero buffs from teammates there is a "panic button" of sorts.   6. Your builds are quite interesting. There was a lot to think about, when looking across both of them. Thank you for taking the time to post them. I worked up another build that has 44.8% smash / lethal defenses and positional defenses of 27.1 (melee), 30.8 (ranged), and 29.9 (AOE). Energy, Fire, and Cold defenses are all 39-40%. Negative energy is 29.6% and psionic is the lowest, at 13.3%. Resist are not particularly high, on the downside, and a specialty IO or two (proc, unique effect) that I'd normally want to slot isn't there. Recharge is down quite a bit, although on the other hand -recharge resist is 60%, which is excellent. Taking higher damage from single target or untyped ranged attacks will definitely lead to taking more damage at times. But, a key weak point in my earlier build was the so-so AOE defenses, which can also be quite problematic at times. This build has better AOE resists, which is helpful, and a majority of typed defenses are noticeable; these changes should help to limit the inflow of ranged damage, to help offset the drop in ranged defenses. Whether or not this build would play better comes down to enemy types and math, the latter of which I'm not an expert at. This build has a hefty self-heal, which can come in handy. But, it's also possible to switch in maneuvers and another power that can serve as a set mule and/or be useful in its own right.   7. This is my first attempt at an end-game blaster build. He currently sits at 44.1% ranged defense (could be bumped up to softcap with minimal effort) and 30.4% smash / lethal defenses. This build seems significantly less sturdy than builds that softcap ranged defense and smash / lethal. But, I'm not entirely certain how to bring smash / lethal defenses the rest of the way, while keeping the powerset choices in place. Perhaps it's simplest to live with less than capped smash / lethal defenses and be glad to have a robust self heal on a blaster. Or, perhaps it's functionally better to remove the medicine pool and opt for other picks instead. Any insights offered would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!   8. Here is a quick, "powers only" build outline. You can flesh it out with IOs for an end-game build. Ice and dark work well together. Ice is good for reducing the rate of incoming damage, but can struggle with taking alpha. Dark helps quite a bit for taking alpha, which helps to address that key weak point for ice control. The epic set helps to fill out damage and defenses. This kind of build should play well in the endgame. Built for strong recharge you can get Fade to perma (or close), which should make this build very sturdy. In fact, it may be worth looking closely at an epic pool with a resist toggle because you may not need the defense toggle to softcap defenses.   9. I'm interested in trying out an ice / psy / ice dom in end-game. This is my first attempt at an end-game dom build and hopefully it isn't a complete mess. I'm hoping to not waste a *lot* of inf on this build only to find it doesn't function well, hence this post requesting feedback. I believe I've gotten her to permadom without relying on incarnates. Her ranged defense is softcapped, smash / lethal defenses are just over 41%, and energy / negative energy defenses are 37.5%. Quite a bit of damage should (hopefully) be screened out. She won't be that strong against psi damage, ironically, but that seems tough to fix without weakening something important. The leadership pool should help teams out, at least in a modest way. I'm considering take "barrier" for her destiny incarnate, which should help to make teammates sturdier. Taking musculature (alpha) and assault (hybrid) will hopefully help to keep her damage respectable in teams. One key question to which I don't know the answer is how well her drain psyche and domination end refills can sustain her through the immense end burn associated with running arctic air a high percentage of the time. I may absolutely need Ageless as the destiny incarnate pick. Or not. I have one extra slot in mental blast at the moment which could be used anywhere, or left where it is. The new build below offers 43.9% ranged defense, just a shade under 200% global recharge (with lots of opportunities for FF procs), solid smash / lethal resists, and a fair number of other good things happening within it. On the other hand, needing to give up on end redux in steamy mist to fit in all the procs / specialty IOs I'm hoping to include may make this build too end-intensive to run; thus, I may need to give up a proc to make the build workable. If I end up dropping a proc then I'd most likely drop the shield wall "3% resist all" IO currently in steamy mist and put a LOTG def / end in its place; that would take ranged defense to 44.5%, which would lead to a 10% drop in the percentage of ranged damage hits that get through and also provide some end reduction in steamy mist. Zepp's earlier suggestion about leveraging aid other turned out to be needed in the end, to make this work, as well as an earlier suggestion to consider explosive strike.   12. Just learned something, as I'm still new to end game. Support hybrid aura has an uptime of 2 minutes and a downtime to match. I didn't know that, and so I have been overly optimistic about reaching the ranged defense softcap. That leaves me needing to do a bit more thinking about what is achievable and what is not.
  13. Zepp: The following thoughts are more in the "playstyle" category, rather than min/max. Regarding group invis, I'm already happy with how my ill / storm plays while exemp'd to lower levels. I'm missing out on being able to invis a group to stealth to the end of missions, which it would be nice to be able to do. But, I'm very seldom having difficulty with getting more aggro than I can handle. I can't see anything I'd want to live without until higher levels, either, so I'll stick with taking group invis late. Also, I'm reluctant to give up on ranged defense, only to have to find it somewhere else again, by slotting "KD to KB" in phantasm. I can see why you like having phantasm as an alpha taker / distraction in groups. It makes sense. But, I find that I can reliably take alpha in +4 content (at higher levels) by using other options that are available. After alpha I'm OK with the level of aggro my ill / storm receives, at least so far. Still, this last post was particularly helpful because of the "heads up" about preventive medicine and about how incarnates are not handled well by the character planner. It helped for refining the build, leading to the (still imperfect, no doubt, but I think improved) build given here: I have two questions for those with good proc-fu and min/max skills, which is what to do with the last remaining slot and (also) whether the Numina's proc in aid self is of any value. Hopefully the following goals will all be achieved, after the last slot is in place: Perma phants, mez protection (indomitable will), and hasten while in combat (counting probable boosts from FF procs) A lot of recharge to have tornado, lightning storm, and freezing rain up often. Also helpful for blind and spectral wounds. (seems fine already, perhaps no need to focus on this) Strong defenses (for a controller), meaning softcap ranged defense, decent resistances, good -recharge debuff resistance, and a solid self-heal available (resists are lowish?) A decent performer even when exemp'd to fairly low levels (this is fine, no tweaks needed) Reasonably good damage (spectral wounds or tornado if I add an extra slot for damage?)   14. Thank you all for the feedback. It has been very helpful. Based on feedback, I revised the build I had earlier by a fair amount, with the following goals in mind: Perma phants, mez protection (indomitable will), and hasten A lot of recharge to have tornado, lightning storm, and freezing rain up often. Also helpful for blind and spectral wounds. Strong defenses (for a controller), meaning softcap ranged defense, decent resistances, good -recharge debuff resistance, and a solid self-heal available after taking a hard hit or two A decent performer even when exemp'd to fairly low levels (ie: for Posi 1, Yin, etc) Reasonably good damage Multiple options for relatively safely taking alpha The build below meets all of these goals. Notes ... - There is one edit that I just can't be bothered to completely redo everything for, which is that the empty slot in weave would be put into hasten and filled with a level 50 IO. If I'm having endurance problems when exempd then I might instead put that slot into freezing rain so I can put in an end red, as it's a pretty expensive cast and it will be cast often. - Phants, spectral terror, freezing rain, and even tornado all make for decent ways to open up a fight and take alpha, especially with capped ranged defense backed up with solid smash / lethal damage resists and a good self heal. - I just won't summon phantasm, by default, when running on teams unless I check with teammates first. It's not a major loss of DPS on a large team anyways. Plus, not having phantasm around gives me more latitude to move around invisibly and position where I'd like to be, without waking up mobs. Also, the extra global recharge and ranged defense from the set bonuses attached to IOs slotted into phantasm are lynchpins for the build goals stated earlier. - To maximize tornado it seems best to frankenslot it, rather than focus on set bonuses. - a 35% reduction in -recharge debuffs seems quite decent. - 10 points of knockback protection will hopefully be enough in most situations.   15. The back and forth has given me a lot of think about, and also quite a few questions. Thank you all for your thoughts. Over the weekend I'll put together another build, based on the feedback received thus far.
  16. Proc-fu is my weakest powerset when it comes to character planning. Thus, the following may be waaayyy off in how things are slotted. A few other notes follow, to help make more sense of the build. Incidentally, the "empty slots" in the build are slots that I'm not sure how to best use. Superior Winter's Gift provides the final bonus needed to reach the ranged defense softcap. Superior Winter's Gift also provides some resistance to -recharge, which along with -recovery are two key debuffs that could be quite problematic. Phants and hasten should all be perma in most situations (unless exemp'd quite low), with very few FF procs needed, I believe. Indomitable will should also be perma or very close to it. A total of 10 knockback protection would hopefully be adequate for most situations. For Tornado I opted for trying to increase both damage and recharge, while also getting some reduction in endurance cost. Frankenslotting, rather than going for set bonuses, seems to work for that power. I'm not certain it's the best path though, as there are much better min/maxers out there than me. I'm kind of torn between Musculature Radial and Intuition Radial for alpha; each has its pros and cons for this build. As for Phantasm, I can just not summon it on teams if knockback is a concern; in most teams it would add little to damage anyways. So, instead I opted to get a bit more ranged defense by slotting the sixth Expedient Reinforcement IO into Phantasm. Budget-wise, I should be able to afford everything within a few more weeks or a month, depending on how much time I get to spend in-game.   17. Thank you for posting! Your build is quite interesting. I can see that with water spout you'll have lots of whirly things going around doing damage. On reflection, I like the "support" hybrid incarnate significantly better than control; a defense buff would really help out for the build I'm putting together, along with the other goodies offered by control. I also team a *lot*, so team support is something I'm happy to do. Since a T3 isn't that expensive to replace I'll work on switching to support, as a priority. Also, intuition is an excellent pick for the alpha slot, as long as your recharge allows phants to be perma; once I get phants perma without incarnates I'd like to switch to an intuition radial alpha slot, as per your build. I'm not certain I understand why HO: micro(A) are slotted in prestige movement powers.
  18. I switched the build around to fit in a couple more purple sets. I'm also thinking of getting an extra 2 slots in aid self, putting Numina's in it, and putting the Panacea proc into health. Not sure from where I'd pull the slots from, though. A key change from the build above is that Psi tornado replaces mental blast for AOE + another place to put a force feedback +recharge proc. I opted for the Agility Core Paragon over Agility Radial. I thought the end mod boost from Core would be crucial to keep as high as possible. But, I regret the loss of movement speed and, at least so far I'm finding that with ageless end is essentially never a problem (at least so far). ^ As before feedback would be most welcome and appreciated. ^ I was initially confused about the difference between Agility Core and Agility Radial in an earlier incarnation of this post.   19. My ill / storm is on a limited budget, but is coming together OK. Phants are perma when incarnates are in the picture, as is indomitable will. Up to 3 lightning storms can be out at a time, as well as several tornadoes. For defenses there is the fighting pool, aid self, mind over body, indomitable will and currently very close to 37% ranged defense (that will be in the 40s quite soon). I have no doubt, though, that there are a number of rookie mistakes here and that the build can be further improved. So, I'm hoping for some suggestions from those with more experience than me. Because Mids has a couple of "holes", slightly more information is needed. Specifically, lightning storm and tornado both have the sudden acceleration "knockback to knockdown" IOs and sprint has the "stealth" IO in it. Also, I'm planning on replacing the aid self IOs with Panacea IOs (including the proc) and the Mental blast IOs with Superior Winter's Gift.   20. Postscript ... I ran a summer blockbuster last night with my illusion / traps and found that the way FFG follows your character around sometimes creates challenges. My character kept getting hit for big damage and had a few hospital trips because staying close enough to have FFG protect teammates in melee range with the AVs sometimes kept my character in harm's way (no matter where I placed him relative to some of the AVs). Then I ran a Synapse last night with my illusion / time character and found the freedom to operate from range made playing her more enjoyable, as well as safer. I liked the concept of the illusion / traps character even more than my illusion / time character. But, I'm finding illusion / time mechanically easier to play and ultimately more enjoyable. FWIW, YMMV, and all the usual caveats apply. My thanks again for the feedback.
  21. Thank you for clarifying. I've got two lowbie illusion controllers; 1 is time manipulation and the other is traps . I'll ponder a bit more. But, I think the possibility of power boosting farsight and the relative ease with which perma phants can be obtained will lead me toward picking time over traps.
  22. I could of course be wrong. But, I suspect that either power boost won't affect traps summons because they're considered pets or it will affect them for the duration for which they exist. My main interest is in boosting FFG for better personal / team defense. Even if affected nothing else for the duration for which it was summoned I'd be happy with that. My best guess, though, is that time manipulation looks very appealing when compared to traps in part because power boosted farsight can be made perma.
  23. I'm wondering if power boost will affect the numbers associated with the traps controller secondary. For example, does power boost affect ... 1. The defense provided by force field generator 2. The regen from triage beacon 3. The debuffs of acic mortar ... etc Thank you in advance for clarifying!
  24. Guardian was where I started as well. I started out in a group with somebody named Sailboat as an officer of that SG. The odds that you're him seem low, but if you are then you might remember that my D2 characters' resistances were usually pretty low. :)
