How likely is this reborn CoH to suddenly shut down?

Personally I'm not going to worry about it. Instead I choose to be thankful the only game to ever keep my attention (for 7 years) is back and I'm having a blast!!! I don't want it to go anywhere and will do anything I personally can to keep it going. Not much anyone can do other than try to donate each month for operational costs.

The ball is in NCs court so to say. The Homecoming team are trying to take us 'legal'. What else can we ask for at this point?

All of that!

Honestly, that would be the death knell of this game for me.  After the way NCSoft handled things, there is no way I'm going back to them.  If they reach a deal to let HC run things autonomously, I can probably live with it.  But if NCSoft thinks I'll come groveling back to lick their boots then they have another thing coming.

Those are just off-the-wall scenarios I just came up with but I agree somewhat with what you are saying. I'm done paying monthly subs for games that are sub-par. ::cough::WoW::cough:: ::sneeze::dcuo::sneeze:: ::sniffle::swtor::sniffle

But I tell you one thing - if NCSoft does release this again and I see one blind box..... I'm out.

NCSoft would probably sell the IP off if there's a little interest. At this point, in their eyes, it's selling a used car with 200k miles on it that's just been sitting in a barn for seven years. I think if we took a few months and collected all donations maybe we all could put enough money together and the devs can make an offer. Pipe dream but you never know.

What I think is funny about NCSoft is they cancel this game but keep Aion. FOR SHAME! But to be fair NCSoft's wheelhouse has always been Asian countries so there's that to factor in as well.

Setting aside how over-the-top this is...

I chose to not give NCSoft any cash after they dropped CoH and I have not.

If they choose to help bring the game back, even if it means *gasp* they make a buck, I am fine with that.

Personally, I have no real trust of longevity about anything that is ever contolled by a single entity, because a single point of failure then exists.

Thinking HC will somehow magically be 'better' than another single point of failure is not, IMO, wise.

Since the HC team is mum on what, exactly, is being discussed, all we can do is wait.

Last I saw, NCSoft had filed for copyright to the code.

I cannot seeing them give that away for free, so I think NCSoft will be part of the solution.

I think the number of people it will turn away because NCSoft is involved will be dwarfed by those that get to play.

So, as an individual, one must follow ones heart and mine does not harbor the hate toward companies some do here.

I hope you can find a game you like run by a company that meets all of your expectations.

See this is why I love this community. Level-headed thinking.... well said. If this was any Blizzard game the trolls would've dug in deep under their bridges and started throwing tons of stones.

If the game is shut down again that would make me sad.  But I'd rather play and have fun now doing so than avoiding the game.  I thought about this too when I started - all those hours wasted if the game is shut down again.

But they're not wasted.  Not as long as you're having fun while playing.  That's my view on it anyway.

Ideally this is handled like how Daybreak Studios dealt with Project 1999 and the EverQuest license.

It sounds like this is what may be going on since Homecoming is non-profit, but I have no idea what depths of stupid NCSoft is capable of.  Since the code for privatized servers of COH is out in the wild, it seems incredibly short-sighted to take the Blizzard route.  Also, the Blizzard case is very different in that the product (World of Warcraft) had an active for profit driven service being run.  COH is an intellectual property, which has monetary value, but it has no real competition with the parent company (NCSoft).

So if Homecoming went away, I'd be sad to not play with people randomly, but It wouldn't mean I couldn't play COH.  I can just as well spin up my own virtual machine and keep it offline.  So a license agreement seems the smart way to go.

Thing is though, I am on an island.

Look at the attacks I get just for trying to remain level headed and fact driven, or, heaven forbid, push for more real data and not be satified and happy with the crumbs given.

Yeah, I don't see this 'community' in a terriby positive light these days... 🙂

But don't forget there are other level-headed people here... quite a few actually. The trolls are gonna troll just to troll. Close minded people aren't worth your time or response.

While at a certain level I agree, the reality is that a lot of players read the forums even if they do not post.

It is just a game, but this still holds true, IMO...

I do in fact, consider the attacks on peoples creativity to be part of the dark tetrad and evil.

IP holders have rights, just as NCSoft has really all the rights ATM.

That does not mean lighting torches and picking up pitchforks to go after cosplayers is 'right'.

@jubakumbi

Just gotta hold fast. Social media has ruined a couple generations of people because they feel empowered by the anonymity of posting something on the internet. Sometimes their thoughts are putrid but we have to take the good with the bad unfortunately. The way I look at it is when someone comes at me with the "I'm right and I could care less what you say" attitude, that empowers me to bring my A game in a debate.

It's all just pixels at the end of the day and to be honest we all could probably use some more sunlight and physical human interaction.

As far as CoX goes - it's really just a relaxation device for me to unwind when I get home from work. I could just as easily replace CoX with a different hobby or make my children clean their rooms more often. LOL.

SWG went through this and they were owned by freaking Sony, probably the worst company besides EA, and there are tons of private servers from all different PUBs. It'll work out in the end. We just need to enjoy it and let the devs do their thing. They are smart people and I personally have all the confidence in the world they will get something done. The most encouraging aspect is that there is an open dialogue with NCSoft when most companies would just say, "Screw you, pay me."

Oh, I am good!

I am well aware of the growing pains ahead for the CoH community, many of not most of whom do seem to like change all have an idea of how things 'should' be...

For me, like you, it is just a game.

I still have plenty of others on the list to play as well.

I won't stop asking 'Why?', 'How?', and 'Who?' though, because I am interested in this game, for a number of reasons. 🙂

NCSoft will never get another dollar from me on general principle.

That aside, I really hope the Homecoming efforts bear fruit and things work out.

For now, we have it until they pry it from my cold, dead hard drive.

So if there is a fee to be paid by HC to NCSoft, you will stop playing?

depends on how that fee is set up. If I were to give/donate to HC (Like the monthly donation set up now) and they paid the fee with the donated money, then it would not be coming from me directly. That's HC taking care of it's business.

But if I had to make an account and pay NCSoft directly (Like with Live) then no way.

Hello. I'm a wandering mmorpg player who tries these things. Back in the day I tried CoH for free (as I always do). I liked it. I liked it so much I subbed when I got to like lv30 or something. This was something I never did, also something I still never do. Who even pays money to these crappy games? But I was in to this CoH (or rather CoV) thing and gonna play the crap out of it.

Then, about an hour after I paid that money, the game chat exploded. Turns out the game was announced to shut down in a month. I already liked the game an unprecedented amount, hell if I'm gonna keep playing for that month and get attached even more for even bigger anger and disappointment. And that was the end of it.

So this is the story of the biggest cockblock I ever got from an mmorpg. I'd prefer to avoid that happening again, so I ask you: how likely is this enterprise to suddenly shut down? I understand it's not a strictly legal thing, so it's constantly in big risk. But if I start playing this again, am I gonna get Cockblocked 2: The Recockening before I can at least finish leveling one toon and see the world and story and so on?

(for the record I'm already installing it and will mess around a bit, but will refrain from getting very invested for now)

So....

You were refunded you rmoney for that month you paid when you paid on announcement day... so you weren't out any money.

The game was still live for 90 days...not one month... after the announcement.

There are currently negotiations to make the server a legitimate/authorized server. If you are really concerned - all the data is out there for you to download for free and you can run your own server if you would like to as well....

Side note: I always thought it was fishy that CoH got the shaft so soon after DCUO releasing. It's like some kind of "there can only be one Highlander" kind of crap with MMO's. SWTOR did the same thing to SWG but SWG was dead long before that because of the combat changes they dropped on the player-base then letting them find out after install.

CoH was not an Asian style MMO; that was pretty well proved when the Korean localization flopped. The way it was built meant that it couldn't be made into a microtransaction-driven cash cow like their other MMOs. Between those two things, it was the red-headed stepchild in NCsoft's lineup. If you look at Positron's account of the situation, CoH was turning a profit, but with the other 'secret' project Paragon Studios was developing sucking money, the studio as a whole was losing money. Since NCsoft management had ordered Paragon to do the development of this project, a sufficiently suspicious mind might draw the conclusion that this project was thrust onto the studio to make it run at a loss, justifying closing the studio, and in the process shutter a game that, while profitable, couldn't be monetized to feed income directly to NCsoft (their other MMOs require you to buy 'NCcoin' directly from NCsoft, which you then use in the individual MMO’s cash shop, so the microtransaction income goes to NCsoft, not the company running the MMO).

I'm not sure that can really be characterised as "soon".  DCUO launched on PC on 11 January of 2011; CoX did not close down until 30 November of 2012.  That's only 43 days short of two years difference.

Yeah ok... I was speculating and so those are not facts sooooooooooo. Ever have an opinion? I have. I know you do because of how you responded.

Exactly. Why can't people just enjoy the moment and let the decision makers decide? Our little posts mean nothing in the end-game. Just play and shut up. It's really not that difficult imho.

Most do.  There are some that, in my opinion, either like to rock the boat or just can't take "wait and see" as an answer.  Some are very vocal (and a joy to /ignore) and as we all know, the vocal minority can make a non issue seem huge.
