I wanted to check with you guys to make sure I'm doing this right.  (And by "right," I mean: not making obvious blunders).

The idea is to be mainly teaming.  I appreciate the synergy that fluffly can immobilize things and set up containment for fireball.  Between all the defense, resistances, and to-hit debuffs you can muster, it seems like it would be fairly sturdy, no?  I also imagine that one glorious moment where you can undo a team wipe by self-rezzing with RotP and then team rezzing with Howling Twilight.  ;D

I haven't tried to mess with IO's yet.  Of course in that case you'd want to six-slot things to take advantage of the set bonuses.  Just trying to get the slotting down at this point.

Just looking at the build real quick, and a couple things jump out:

You only need 2x RechRdx in Hasten; boost one of them +5 and you're golden.

I would try and squeeze Leadership in there somewhere, so as to get ahold of Tactics; it helps you help your pets help you and helps you too.

As for the IO thing, this is just MY opinion, but I feel  *most* sets aren't worth the sixth slot.  It's not that the 6th bonuses are bad, but going 6 on one power robs you of a 4th or 5th slot on another power, which could bring enhanced values on THAT power to the ED cap or nab you a +Rech bonus or something important.

This is my current Ill/Dark/Fire build.  I prioritized +Rech over any other bonus, and that led to dipping into lower-capped sets in a few places.  The end result is 140% global +Rech before Hasten kicks that up to 210%, which gives me perma-Hasten, perma-PA, and perma-Fade.  All that extra +Rech is useless without addressing endurance, so I added a bit of Endurance Discount (6%) and +MaxEnd (9%).  And while the resulting Def/Res is lower than most people would want, honestly, between all the -ToHit, -Dam, Heals, +Regen, and aggro-sapping PA, I find that surviving is no problem.

Mine isn't not quite perma on Hasten / PA but close (1 second off with Alpha). I only use 2 purples though cos I'm relatively poor / afflicted by Altisis. I just don't play her enough to warrant multiple 5*30 million purple IOs.

Epic pool powers are a recent, post Fade fixnerf change. I've procced up in an effort to give myself some reasonable damage. Not sure if I'll stick with them though, they are slow to animate and make me use Mace (or "wand" as I delude myself into thinking). The Forced Feedback proc might get you to perma PA if you get lucky.

One thing I would recommend is getting a KB2KD into Phantasm to stop him cone-kbing mobs out of your Tar Patches.

@rolekiI tried this precise build and it's amazing! Thank you for posting this. It came in under 400m, as I built about half the recipes myself, and it operates better than some of my 'nearing-1B' builds. This is the best bang for the buck by far. And yes, I wade into +mobs fearing death, as I'm a controller and ergo squishy, but with just enough def/res, true perma PA, and amazing End reserves, I have not gotten into trouble yet. I'm about to take him for a spin up against AVs though, so we'll see.
But thanks again, this build makes 'Stage-Fright' (on Everlasting) very fun to play!

Glad to hear it!  I would have felt bad if it sucked 😉

Still using pretty much the build i ran on live just dropped spectral to try out sorcery. Soul for thematic reasons and i prefer the numbers from patron shields. Somehow ended up with ranged defence of 45% without aiming for it i was running 35 to all on live and it was good for soloing the toughest stuff. Spent my last day before game closed running sf's and soloing heroes in RV. Its easily in my top 5 all time favourites and was my main at the end. Latest build:

Hi guys, returning CoX junkie here back from beta days. Never got a toon to 50 due to chronic alt-o-holism & that damn costume editor lol!

Anyway, I now have a half dozen toons with 3 in their 20s. I love pet classes so rolled an Illusion/Dark controlfreak this week. I mostly solo (I know, I know), so I had to try Superior Invisibility. Not sure why no one here takes it, being the best stealth power in the game bar none. Am I the only silly solo shlep who loves this power? I mean, I can get in orange bosses' faces without them having a clue & race to mission ends if I want! 🙂 I guess I can see how it would be a bit less useful in groups, but surely you all solo some of the time...?

Anyway, was hoping for some advice on levelling to 50 (just dinged 10). I'll throw a full bag of 25 IOs at all the powers at 22, but any/all suggestions on dos/donts up to then & beyond to max level much appreciated.

Welcome back @Nostromo21 and I think you will enjoy the ride to 50 on the ill/dark.......I liked it so much I did it twice. As far as superior invisibility goes it's a love it or not kinda power, while it does a good job at what it does I much rather have shadowfall active for the defense boost and other perks it gives, paired with a stealth proc in sprint and all is good. Not that superior invisibilty is bad or anything and while I do have it in my build it's mainly to house a LotG proc. Advice for the ill/dark ride is recharge to make PA perma......the more recharge the better. Dark is so much fun with it's buffs with fade and soul absorption to teh debuffs it gives with darkest night, howling twilight(best stun and debuff in the game) and of course fluffy to do what only he can.

So many ways to build the beast that is ill/dark and all will work, some costly some not so much but all will be fun. In the early levels confuse, confuse and confuse some more and in the later levels.....confuse, confuse and confuse some more, actually with PA up perma or near perma and with phantasm, spectral servant, fluffy and your attack chain(spectral wounds, blind and oblit from soul mastery in my case)  most things will drop rather easily.   Truest and best advice for the ill/dark is this......get enough recharge for perma PA or near enough perma, create a build that fit's your playstyle whether it be an OP world beater, a team build or whatever you can come up with....make it fun....make it enjoyable......make it memorable

I mostly soloed my ill/dark, too.  I took group invisibility rather than superior invisibility because you can have group invisibility active at the same time as shadow fall, and my recharge is boosted so high that I always have group invisibility up anyway.  With near-perma PA (only off by about half a second, so I can resummon by the time they finish disappearing), my minions draw most of the aggro, anyway.  Besides, group invisibility helps protect the phantasm and dark servant pets, too.  I can actually keep the phantasm alive most of the time against +3/x8 mobs!

Cheers guys, yeah, having a lot of fun with this Ill/Dark Controller. Can't wait to get my first pets at 18th! 🙂

----

So I got the 3 stooges (after a couple altstractions!) & boy oh boy does it change everything! From relying on crappy basic direct dmg skills (plus the couple staff freebies which weren't too bad & I never would have been able to get to 18 without!), to having amazing pet burst damage! The 3 recharge SOs in Hasten help, but I imagine a top priority now is to get to 22 & slot 3 recharge IOs each in both Hasten AND Phantom Army ASAP...? Eventually I'll get all the other pets, and I imagine Soul Mastery is the best Epic to go with the theme? Thanks all!

Hoping for some quick general advice with this guys, as I just finally hit 22 (shlomo!). Is it worth getting some Recharge reduction sets before 50? I can get all generic IOs, but I think I will struggle with the pets (PA have about 30secs downtime, even while triple slotted + 3 Recahrge SOs in Hasten). Is it worth/possible even trying to get perma-hasten/pets before level 50?

Also, do set enhancements keep their bonus all the way to 50 like IOs? Are they in fact a type of IO...? Much thanks in advance! 🙂

Just wanted to clarify the confuse thing - do you mean Deceive? I've acutally skipped that so far, as it seems counter-productive at these lower levels (no XP for mobs killing their mates). I prob should have taken it before I got PA, as the limited direct dmg skills did make it a bit of a slog to 18 (all the debuffs and defense made it safe & easy though :). The new super-duper fly+hover+afterburner is an absolute joy I must say! Changes the gameplay with little down/travel time between missions & really opens up the game - great change Homecoming!

Yes, deceive. I use it to keep a few busy as I take care of the rest and then finish them off. The loss of xp for one or 2 is really not that noticeable to make that much of a difference and on those tougher enemies if you deceive them.......they don't hit you back

Thanks guys. I guess I'm still a newb with things like IO sets & all of the endgame. I imagine that even trying to slot the couple of sets you mention above would be challening in the 20s, or even 30s, given the limited total number of slots availble. Btw, do all the set IOs have to be slotted into the same power to get the set bonuses, or anywhere across all powers...?

Just looking at the costs on AH - even 25s for LotG are 5-6mill+ - I assume you mean that I take just the 1 IO with reduced global recharge 7.5% & stick that in another power? Same with FF with the 1 IO that only has a twice/min chance to increase recharge rate.

What about 4 slotting Call to Arms and Expedient Reinforcement (at 30), with 6.25% global each...?

All of these are in the millions, which I could scrape together by doing the Merits -> Enhance Conv -> melee Enhancement convert until I get an enhancement worth 2-3million. I'd have to do that multiple times on a number of chars to afford even a couple of the single IOs you suggested above, eh.

Thankfully LotG and FF actually look cheaper at 50 (or no more expensive). Weird economy heh.

With the IO's you're thinking of buying, look for the attuned pieces as they level with you. Cost is relatively the same but no need to have to swap out for higher level ones or even wait til 50. To get the set bonuses you have to have X number in a single power to get the bonus.......putting 2 in a power and 2 more in a different power won't give you the 4 piece bonus but it will give you the 2 piece bonus twice. As far as the money goes......one way is to farm and either build a farming toon to fund your builds or....and this is my personal choice and the best way I've earned money is to do TF's, I gets lotsa coin on TF's..........third is to play the market but I'm not good at that one as I'm too impatient.

Like Doc says BE SURE TO BUY ATTUNED. Sorry for shouting but I made that mistake on my first char here, which was an Ill/Dark.

It probably won't be possible to hit perma PA / Haste before 50 on an Ill/Dark but it's still worth trying (IMO). Even just having PAs more often (and Tar Patch etc) is a good thing. I like slotting as I go, using SOs as fillers as needed. I find it more engaging than just IOs at 22 til 50.

Here's a cheap version of my level 50 Ill/Dark which might help, I switched anything too dear for alternatives. I would get the Controller ATO if you can though, you can slot it from level 10 onwards (alternatively slot Flash the same as Blind).

Thanks again guys. Just a couple final points:

1. how do check if an IO is 'attuned'? I thought they all were by defaiult. I just bought a full set of 25s at lvl 22 & they seem to be keeping their bonuses at each level up.

2. If I have 3 Recharge Reduction IOs already in PA, can I add a Level 25 Acc/Recharge Call To Arms IO say & will I get the full +20% Recharge Reduction, or does that also hit the law of diminishing returns with 3 basic IOs already in there, so that the 4th is severely scaled down?

1. Attuned IOs don't show a level, and only Set IOs can be attuned

2. You'll still hit the ED reduction regardless of what type of enhancement you slot.

Ok thanks mate, I think I understand #1 & will keep that in mind when I start to buy full sets at level 50. So I don't think I made a mistake buying all IO 25s at lvl 22, as their bonus will stay the same (even it if doesn't scale) to 50 (I might refresh them at 35-40 possibly); and, most importantly, I could easily afford these at 50-70K a pop at 22, whereas I've got no chance to afford any of the sets IOs in the builds I've seen, at any level right now! They al start at 2mill & just go up from there, YIKES! 😉 Although I see some attuned set IOs like Blood Mandate are available from 25-50 & scale all the way, so would be worth buying at 22, IF I had the influence from another main, which I don't unfortunately, due to my chronic alt-o-holism ;).

----

I have managed to complete a couple of the cheap-arse sets now, as per your recommendations Carnifax - Malaise on Deceive (yeah, great skill - why did I ever skip it? :-/); Expedient Reinforcement on PA. Just those 2 make a huge diff to overall power and recharge times. Working on amassing my auctioneer fortune now so I can afford Decimation and Dark Watcher's Despair, as well as another set of Exp Reinf for Phantasm at 32.

The build is almost silly safe, with all sorts of debuff & control options - I don't even need to rely on my PAs if I have my ST out, as I can lockdown up to 6-8 mobs & just knock them off 1 by 1! The only issues I'm having is Stamina, Stamina, Stamina! Oh and some sort of AOE would have been nice, but I think I'll need to wait for my Epic pool at 41 to get one of those possibly...? Thanks again!
