Me, personally, for character screen and other shots, I use a free tool called Greenshot.  It's easy to install, and the default usage button is my keyboard's prnt scr button.  Greenshot lets me freeze-frame the screen, then do a cutout of any part I'd prefer to save.  It then gives me a menu of options where to put the image.  My only irritant on Greenshot is that, for reasons I don't fully understand, it sometimes doesn't load, but I just go over to the Windows Start menu and find it under "G".

Very recently I joined Everlasting's Owl Clan supergroup with the bird-headed stone tank, Owl's Moving Castle.
