Look, I know they're out there. I wanna see how far we can push the notion of "Average Joe". Did you try different ATs? What pools synergized the best with eachother? Maybe one day we can team all of our power pool only toons together to create the ultimate Legion of Suck.

I'll bite.  

 

I'm assuming the restriction is only pool powers when you can take them, so only your first three powers come from your primary/secondary?  I'm focusing on a build that should be able to solo 1-50 through "normal" content.  Maybe not +4, but probably +3/x8.

 

The hard part is finding four pools (and one ancillary) that you can take enough powers from!  I went Fighting (for pretty obvious reasons), Leaping (for Combat Jumping and Acrobatics.  It's been a dog's age since I took the latter but you need *some* mez mitigation.  Spring Attack for an AoE -res debuff!), Medicine (self-heal, Injection as a single target debuffer), and Force of Will (mainly for Unleash Potential, but Weaken Resolve also as a single target debuffer).  Soul Mastery for Gloom and -to hit debuff.

 

The power selection order can certainly be optimized over this quick build, but I think it will get us where we are going.  Slowly, of course.

You are correct. For it to truly be "pools only", you get whatever picks you make at 1 and 2, then power/epic pools only from level 4 and onward. This has been an interesting concept to me because what AT and primary/secondary you pick can actually influence other power picks you make pretty heavily. It leads to some really unique takes.

 

I think it's crazy that your Tank looks like it could really take some blows, even with no substantial armor. Now if we had a pools-only Defender or Controller, we could really get something going here. Look out, Lord Recluse...

I've got another one stalled at 28, a Psi melee/Bio scrapper. The first two powers of Bio are a good bang for the buck. His attacks come from the Fighting pool, with his primary psi blade like a special attack. I took Force of Will since the animation lent itself nicely with the psi melee concept. But FoW attacks animate soooooo sloooooow that it's frustrating. I might go back to it one of these days after my other projects are done.

Mid 20s-low 30s was a stagnation point for my pools only toon as well. This is the range where mobs start getting a lot of tools that a gimped toon just can't deal with. Getting constantly gunned down by Council as a melee AT is a special kind of frustration I haven't had to deal with since pre-IO days.

 

It does make for a fun challenge though. You really have to pick your scenarios well or eat dirt.

Pool Man lives!  Or well, he lived once upon a time.  This is an old build that was surprisingly fun to play - Whirlpool, Geyser, Spring Attack while shouting "CANNONBALL!!!"  If I timed it right I would land just as the splash from Geyser went up.

Procced out arctic breath is very strong. You will need plenty of external acc bonuses to forgo any accuracy slotting in it. Since you get a freespec at 24 I don't consider picking crab armor instead of wolf armor cheating. This gives you mez protection and range softcap. If you really need a heal there are P2W temps for that.

I love crafting (and often playing) these kinds of builds, ones with serious constraints.  If you asked me to make the most powerful and enjoyable melee alt, I'd freeze.  But if you ask me to make one that can only use ranged attacks, I'd be happy as a clam and make one that can solo +4/x8 content.

This is really cool. I never considered Arctic Breath and how proccable it is. Then again, I can't think of any other instance where you would need it. Nice stuff.

I think a pool-only character shouldn't have epic/patron power sets or even Incarnates. IMO, adding such powers defeats the purpose of this thread. You guys are still creating an average Joe, right?

Well, as average as one could possibly be at 50. I don't think you could fill every power slot without taking an epic/patron pool.

That is a fair point about the Incarnates though. I mostly added them for the hell of it.


24 power choices to 50, 3 Pri/Sec mandatory, and 4 pools with 5 powers each means you're shy 1 power and 3 slots if you don't train to 49. Can still be combat level 50, and never an incarnate.

Death is the best debuff.

If you look at them in isolation, many of the ancillary pools are ridiculously overpowered, depending on the AT.  Their design is presumably based on the idea that they will exploit the powers in their primary/secondary.  Based on the aforementioned pool power rules (only primary/secondary for first 3 powers), squishies can get as much or more mitigation than melee alts.  I'd kill to get controller ancillaries on scrappers.  Well, I'd be willing to use harsh words.

When I read that "+3/8 solo", I was shocked. Here I am still struggling against "+2/>x1".

Pool powers selection is a bit different. For example, purchasing Tough requires Boxing or Kick. I need to convert this into an equation.
If Box, Kick, and Tough are decision (Yes/No) variables, there are several legal and illegal combinations.

I can use "Box + Kick – Tough >= 0" to filter out that one illegal combination.

Honestly, I start all my alts at +1/x1 right out of training.  I may be optimistic, but I think +3/x8 is doable without too much problem on that tank.  Tanks are super easy.  I just dinged 17 on her, and she is running at +2/x3.  Accuracy and AoE damage ftw.
