Poison/Water - your thoughts, input and reasons I just shouldn't...

I've always liked Water as a set. I have always liked Poison as a set.

I have never combined the two.

There doesn't seem to be a huge amount of synergy and I've probably never played Poison to its full potential, preferring to stand at range, thus largely missing the T9 benefits of Venomous Gas.

But I do have an amazing concept for a toxic water goddess in a polluted war zone - and I want it to work.

I've spent hours in Mids and so far I'm just shitting the bed. It seems like it should work but I just can't make it do the magic.

It feels like the basis of Poison is Venomous Gas... you build the character's core around that and on paper, Water should support that in some good ways; Water Burst, Whirlpool and Geyser seem that with some judicial targetting, would erupt beneath your feet and benefit from VG immensely.

The other ranged powers of Water would seem to synergise well with the debuffs of Poison, but when I put it all into Mids I get a mess, something neither here nor there, not doing anything well and nothing seems to give me enough to give a sense of survability.

I would really enjoy this working. But I got nothing.

Over to you guys

Water, Ice, Darkness, Radiation, and Electricity synergize with Poison sufficiently. If you aren't completely sold with Water - you could whittle water-based concepts with Radiation or Darkness tinted with aquatic color-schemes. Dozens of my characters use Water concepts - including my Poison/Sonic Defender Whale Main 🙂

For Thematic choices: How could you not love this sea-green orbs (Radiation-Proton Volley)? OR maybe even the (Darkness-Tentacles) sea anemones strangling the baddies?

I mean - if you're avoiding Venomous Gas then why bother with Poison at all? It compliments all of your debuffs and dramatically increases your survivability standing closer to targets. Water can comfortably play at a Medium-Small distance with Water Burst, Whirlpool, Steam Spray, and Geyser. Plus you've got 2 Knockups built-in there in addition to Dehydrate's healing properties to sustain yourself.

Though perhaps Radiation or Trick Arrow would better suit your playstyle if you want to continue playing at range?

As far as Builds go - there is always some peer-review if you want some helpful input.

Water's big boon to poison is Dehydrate's self heal makes a nice compliment to poison not having any self sustaining powers.

I have a pre-page 5 Poison/Water somewhere that I've been meaning to Respec.  I just don't like the tier 2 water blast, so I'll be changing that out for something else.

so I've come up with this build: It's crap. It's light on Def, Res and status resistances - I can see I'll be munching orange and purple sweeties like an addict.

but it's going to hurt anyone that comes close. I think I'm gonna hit them quite hard and there's going to struggle to dodge anything I put in their path. I can also run away with a bit of luck.

If you can think of anything I can do to improve it feel free to suggest. I'm not wedded to Psychic Mastery but it seems like a pretty good compliment to it.

I'm at work so can't open this in Mid's, but here are some thoughts:

  • It seems like you're severely underslotted for accuracy. Many powers have none at all, while others only have 26.5%. All I'm seeing is a Kismet and one 11% accuracy bonus, which really isn't enough.
  • I wouldn't slot a Winter set in Toxic Dart. Would put this in an attack that can benefit from the damage and recharge enhancement, like Whirlpool or Steam Spray.
  • Poison Trap is a good candidate for damage procs and/or a hold set. Definitely 6 slots.
  • Skip Corrosive Vial unless you just want it for concept.
  • Venomous Gas needs to be slotted for -tohit.
  • Skip World of Confusion. It's a terrible power.
  • No Defender's Bastion? Provides several very good set bonuses.

I've kind of reworked it and taken elements of all the builds I've looked at.

I'm pretty pleased with the results I think this could play very well

I did this combo on a corrupter up to lvl 50 (Cheap Tequila!  still love the concept) and just never felt comfortable with it.  It felt like the single target and small aoe strengths of poison didn't mesh well with the larger aoe strengths of water.  Perhaps that is just my weakness as a player though.

Play my AE Adventures, listed under @Jiro Ito, including award winners:

"The Headless Huntsman of Salamanca" #43870 **Scrapbot AE Contest Winner May 2022**

Don't call it weakness, call it a difference in play style. I must admit it's difficult for me to thrust myself into the middle of mobs (when not a tank) - but if there is a good tank taking the aggro, then this does seem to work well, unslotted and only lvl 40. I seem to have a routine of run into the mob behind the tank, with VG running, then PT, then a couple of local holds, followed by Tidal Forces and Waterburst or Geyser

There's not very much left unharmed and standing after that. They're falling down like they been really drunk 😄

I think the trick would be to leverage water's knocks to give you an opening to apply, (and keep applying), poison's debuffs.  It might also be advantageous to get spring attack so you have a convenient way of getting in close and further knocking down said enemies, or perhaps fold space to tightly groups them to maximize the debuffs.

I'm thinking Incan might be the way to go there... appear in the midst of mobs, stun them and... oh they never quite recover because VG and PT

It would involve changing your power pools, but I would recommend Combat Teleport (or Mystic Flight/Translocation).

I like Mystic Flight/Trans - BUT here it has one massive drawback. If I want to TP into the middle of a mob I have an extra click to turn off the flight power so that I can lay PT.

PT is one of those super annoying powers that you just cannot use even if at 0ft when flying.

I perhaps might be able to remedy it with a bind but frankly I'm not good enough with binds to do that. I'm also unsure what I'd drop to get that TP power. I like the power and slotting that Stealth gives me, not to mention the fact that as a squishy it's good to be able to get thru some maps unseen.

I appreciate the suggestion and I'm on board with why you think they're good options but I figure at the speed with which we can get Incarnate powers in the game today it's not too long of a wait.

The problem with Incand is 1) you can only use it every 2 minutes and 2) awkward if you're on a team, some of whom may want to stay at range.

Heh, I just recently created a bind cycle for my Brute that only occasionally uses Mystic Flight to use Translocation briefly. Usually to get through walls ontop of an ally.

Binds can be a little overwhelming at first. I would recommend making macros first to tweak and then assign them as a bind if you aren't used to making them.

/macro TP "powexec_location distance:max Translocation$$powexec_location target Translocation$$powexec_toggleon Mystic Flight"

/bind shift + t "powexec_location distance:max Translocation$$powexec_location target Translocation$$powexec_toggleon Mystic Flight"

This bind will prioritize the following:

1. Activate Mystic Flight

2. Teleport to a Target (if selected)

3. Teleport to the maximum distance you can (if no target is selected) Note: Camera needs to face desired direction

/macro XF "powexec_toggleoff Mystic Flight"

/bind shift + x "powexec_toggleoff Mystic Flight"

1. Shuts off Mystic Flight

Excellent point, well made, one I'd not considered. Thanks. That'll prevent me getting slapped by the team.

/bind shift + t "powexec_location distance:max Translocation$$powexec_location target Translocation$$powexec_toggleon Mystic Flight"

This bind will prioritize the following:

1. Activate Mystic Flight

2. Teleport to a Target (if selected)

3. Teleport to the maximum distance you can (if no target is selected) Note: Camera needs to face desired direction

/macro XF "powexec_toggleoff Mystic Flight"

/bind shift + x "powexec_toggleoff Mystic Flight"

1. Shuts off Mystic Flight

Hmmmmm interesting

This I like - I think

So... let's take this a stage further - I'm in the air, I want to select my target, TP there, turn off MF and then drop PT - can I do that all in one macro?

The Ghost Slaying Axe. The very best there is. When you absolutely, positively got to kill every motherspectre in the room, accept no substitutes.

Not necessarily. There are intentional limitations to Binds/Macros to prevent someone from say - Putting all their attacks onto 1 buttons and pressing it repeatedly. You will need to consider things like Poison Trap having a cooldown that may interfere with how you want your macro to behave whereas Mystic Flight and Translocation don't have cooldowns due to their buff-like toggle behavior. Mind, there are different rules depending on the ability type. Most notably a buff-toggle versus other abilities and ground-target abilities.

There is also some logic to it - You're asking for a single macro that both Teleports and Toggles off flight. These are conflicting goals in itself and you may cycle onto shutting off Mystic Flight mid-air which would prevent Teleporting. I don't think you would be able to pull this off with 1 macro - but 2 might be doable if you add a Poison Trap extension to the shut-off command.

If you're more interested in macro/bind complexity - I would suggest trying simple ones first then adding a few functions (notice how priority moves right-to-left) and checking out some guides around these forums.

I don't remember how to do it, but I seem to recall you can have one macro execute on pressing a key and a second execute on releasing the key.

That might involve bind_load files.

Though, I have never tried the syntax mentioned in this thread

Might scope it out later. They basically assigned a +$$ to be 'press only' and then a normal (different) $$ command to execute.

ok so... given the "need" for Mystic Flight, I've reworked the build (again) so here is V4

I have sacrificed some Def but improved Res dramatically across the board - and I figure that if I can get the macro working, I can TP into a mob and the poor bastards won't know what hit them until it's too late.

I do love the synergy of Shark Skin and the "Oh Shit" button in Hibernate but not too enamoured of the Coralax but hard to know what else to take. Open to suggestions.

I use a Razer Naga million button mouse and a Razer Tarterus game pad so once I know how to make a functioning bind I can glue it to a single keypress and Robert is your mother's brother.
