Just wondering, is NVidia dropping support for 32-bit CUDA/PhysX going to impact HC?

My primary guess is no, but...... the game code was built around PhysX and even supported an accelerator card at one time. I even looked at buying one back in the day but they were too hard to find and expensive (at least at first) then PhysX was added to the NV GPU drivers.

 

Anyhow and back to my wandering point, any thoughts on potential issues?

This results in the same physics quality as enabling PhysX hardware, as has been requested, without having to actually update the PhysX libraries. The reason it's being done this way is because updating the libraries would break the game client for other servers that share the same game files. The impact on the CPU is negligible on modern hardware."

We don't actually use the PhysX APIs any longer.

Or was that just the launcher?

The client is 64bit yes, but we still don't use the hardware physx APIs, only software.

This change doesn't effect us in any way, even on our 32 bit client.  This change is 100% ONLY Hardware PhysX, which as I said we don't use anyway.

Whoa...what kind of video card are you shooting for?  The only cards I know priced at that level I'd call "bleeding edge" stuff: top 5 or 6 cards available on PassMark's benchmarked chart.  Okay, some of the Quadros are off the scale in pricing, but they don't benchmark well, and looking at their stats, I'm not really sure what the spike in price is justified by.

The highest official price for a consumer GPU is $1999.00 US though I expect some of the third party, Factory Overclocked" or otherwise enhanced versions of the 5090 might go as high as $2500ish.

 

Then again perhaps the $3500 is scalper pricing or Canadian or AUD Dollars (or one of the many other countries that also call currency a Dollar). Not sure what current conversion rates are.

Well, you don't need to pay that much for a video card in order to play CoH.

MSRP is not even close to what the new cards are selling for.  ASUS has the RTX 5090 listed for $3409 and that is before scalper pricing.  The RTX5070ti is supposed to MSRP for $750-$1000 but I suspect it will sell for 2-3 times that price when it is released.  I am by no means planning on paying that kind of price for a video card.

 

edit:  ok, to be fair the ASUS card had an AIO cooler included.  Still, $3080 for the bare card is kinda rediculous.

A few players mention scalping. It translates into gullibility.

 

I don't complain about scalping prices. Reason being I don't pay scalping prices. If money is no object to you and you have no morals go for it. Complaining about it isn't going to stop it. Not buying at scalping prices is the only way to stop or at least deter it thereby leaving the profiteer with excess stock losing money (good).

My main rig's still using a 5700 XT from >5 years ago.

So, seems less "good for a while" and instead "good permanently."  The devs seem to have removed any and all dependencies on future PhysX changes.

I'm assuming we're talking the 32GB GDDR7 variety.   Passmark lists it as the top mark in current benchmarks, but doesn't yet list a price.  Amazon doesn't have it yet, of course.  Do you do pro competitive gaming or something?  'Cause that's just...wow...both cost and anticipated performance.

An extra $1500 less the $150-250 one might spend for a separate AIO of the same capacity and quality.

 

Not in my budget --- still if your not hawking a kidney for it - good for you.

 

I hope it significantly out benches the stock version at that price. 

 

Asus builds some nice toys, they charge for their brand name as well.

Nah, just a normal programmer/gamer/enthusiast in the process of building a new rig.  At the rate prices are going there will soon be a convergence in naming and pricing. ~$6,000 for the RTX 6090 anyone?  Video card pricing is seriously f*d up

Dang, that's seriously off topic but also interesting. I bought a 4060 TI last year for £400 (around $500 US) and it plays everything I need in gorgeous 4K.

 

And my entire 32 core Threadripper PC cost less 3 years ago than that video card price quoted above.
