Captain Bladehook the Red?

Anyone know the deal with Captain Bladehook the Red?  Just fought him as an AV, plus his ghost-y hangers-on, in Talos island.  Got 6 Reward Merits for defeating him.  There was an announcement in Hero Event Messages when he spawned.

 

I have never seen him before, nor have I heard of him, either.  No one else present when fighting him knew anything, either.  I have searched the forums and the Homecoming wiki, to no avail.

 

Either my search-fu sucks or this is something new and as-yet unannounced?

It's new as of today. International Talk Like a Pirate Day stuff happening. There's treasure chests to open where the Xmas gift glowies spawn, they give piratey messages and/or spawn spectral pirates.

So, solo, you get either three level-free white spectral pirates to defeat, or a random message -- there are no actual rewards other than progress on the badge for defeating spectral pirates?

I think that the "Nice" prizes that have custom text in the reward channel gives Legacy Salvage, I wound up with some Red Cap Coins and Ecotoplasm.

There's a few invention salvage that a pirate would be after such as Gold, Sapphires, Rubies, and Diamonds.  (possibly others?)

The Legacy salvage, if you have one of each of Ectoplasm, Coins, Ring, and Ghost Trinket, then open one of the "cursed" chests, Captain Bladehook arrives (and takes one of each of that salvage)

Just took my 50 electrical corruptor and teamed over in Neutropolis to deal with Bladehook.   I noticed I couldn't drain his endurance like I do all the time with the standard archvillains and monsters.  On those, I at least make a notable dent, and on several I can eventually create a nearly full drain (they always keep a bare minimum endurance).  On Bladehook, my efforts barely registered.

 

At one point he disappeared entirely for me, while my teammates seemingly didn't have such problems and fought on.  So apparently one or more of his minions may have a blind function?  Bring yellow inspirations, just in case.

I'll try to pay closer attention if I encounter him again, but I'm guessing he has a placate.

Despite showing as belonging to the 'Spectral Pirates' group, the ghost pirates spawned from the chests apparently don't count toward the badge for defeating spectral pirates -- I ran a chest route on a recently-new character who's never been to Port Oakes, and despite whacking at least a hundred of the ghost pirates, no badge progress shows up in the badge list.

The vendor in an SG base (and presumably the regular vendors as well) will buy the legacy salvage for 100 inf per item, too, so you can divest yourself of them if you want to cut your chances of him spawning.

No badges.  It's a one day event and they didn't want to cause any badge completionists to have aneurysms.  (or something like that)

I suspect if you don't want him to spawn, you can put the legacy items into your vault as well.   I did note legacy salvage selling for ~14k last night.  19k current.

Get four salvage, spawn Bladehook, collect six merits, profit.  (I don't think he's time gated)

And the 'collect one of each legacy salvage to bump the chance of spawning Bladehook' seems to be overrated; I got him to spawn on the third chest I'd opened with a character that previously hadn't opened any, when they only had a ring from the legacy salvage.

Hmm.   My understanding is that also uses up the four, but I noted some odd behaviour before.   Also, it may be limited to once/hour per zone.  But I haven't had a chance to verify and probably won't

I really like events like this...  Unfortunately, I had company at my place from Thursday afternoon until Sunday night and didn't ever get a chance to find the AV. I did get salvage on two different characters early Thursday while waiting for my guests to arrive though.   Is this gone forever?  Until next year on TLAP day?

This event was super fun. And as someone who likes collecting Red Cap Coins, that was a fun little surprise.

 

I get not giving people badges, but for next year I'd like him to give a special title for a couple weeks or something. "Pirate Pulverizer" or somethin'.

 

(And then if you can lure him to Fort Hades and kill him on a ghost trap, maybe "Fort Hades Employee Of The Month", heh)
