I have one character who I created to be my sole "badge hunter" (They're a re-creation of the alt I had on Live for the same purpose). I only got so far with it before I got bored, though (those crafting badges were a slog!). I'll still pull them out whenever a new badge is introduced, if it's reasonably easy to get.

Frees up the name for others.

As someone who struggles from time to time to come up with a decent name, I appreciate this gesture. Even if I never chose the one you gave up, each of us has the chance to get it, and I think that's great!

As for the guy who makes a character to squat on a name until they can flesh out the character...I just hope it's a short term squat, like 1-2 months, not 1-2 years.

I keep rarely 'used' lvl 50 toons for testing. This is preferable to using the test server for me because then I can keep the drops and other rewards. I have 40-50 toons that are experimental in this way, but as it turns out there are a lot of things I like to test so they end up getting regular use...  even if it is just to sitting with an attack on autofire to measure the impact of different buffs from other toons.

I made a stalker for the sole purpose of beating up Anti-matter at the end of Tina's arc. My backstory for him is that his creator was killed by Neuron, so he's beating up anti-matter just to spite Neuron.

So I logged in for a moment this morning while waiting for a flight at the airport on my FF toon (figured I’d make a little while I had nothing else to do) when low and behold, the first message that came over any channel was. .

Ada in 2 minutes!

Well, that’s all I needed to hear. I logged out and logged back in with one of my “ada” toons, slapped ada, and then logged back on my farmer. "Ada toons" are alts that I got to 50 but decided along the way that they were never going to see much more action (I didn’t like them enough for some reason or another to get them maxed out etc.). I’m not sure if this is uncommon, but I certainly see many of the same people crunching ada on the regular.

So here is the question.

Do you have any alts that you think serve an odd purpose? Not a farmer or a private SG alt, those are rather normal, but an alt that is used for a specific purpose and that is their only/main purpose.

I have a Buffy homage named Most Likely To Slay, who I only play in October during the Halloween spookiness.

I just created a character named Space Pirate Ghost, in response to the short Pirate themed event that just ended. He’ll be on ice until next September, if the event returns.

I have a character who I created nearly two years ago just to hold prismatic aethers. Everyone emails them to the global and he collects them.

I have a Rikti character who only plays in Mothership Raids (mostly)

I consider all of these characters to be similar to the inclusion of the Phantom Stranger in the Justice League. He’s a member, never shows up at regular meetings, but every 5 years or so the JLA is facing some weird magical threat and the Phantom Stranger shows up. Because that’s his time to shine.

A few.  Some content is only accessible to characters in the correct level range.  Therefore, I have a stalker at level 4 with XP turned off.  And one at 9.  And at 14, 19, 24, 29, 34, 39, 44, 49.

Sometimes you just need someone with kinetics for something like the skiing badges so I have Glowing Kin ( the name Pocket Kin was taken) on my 2nd account.

And sometimes you need to move a lot of stuff between characters or servers, so I have Mule Train.

Oh, and you know the Manny Gas station floating in the void outside Pocket D?  I have 'Manny the Gas Man' who lives out there just so I could do a funny screenshot.

Unless you don't value your time, then yes, you are "harming yourself" in order to delete the character... it may not be a literal wound, but you are devoting more effort toward destroying the character than to just leave them be...

That's a nonsensical argument.  Surely you can grasp that plenty of people devote time and effort to 'organizing things' by doing tasks that others perceive as a waste of time.  If someone chooses to perform a task AND derives satisfaction from it, for you to argue that they're harming themself is rather rude and insulting.

Derives pleasure from what, exactly?  Deleting their characters?  That is what I was arguing against - not transferring their inf or items, not renaming them to free up the name, not changing their costume or anything like that - I argued strictly against deleting them;  Especially if you don't actually need that character slot freed...

I have a couple Hami Toons, a toon whose sole purpose in life is to hold the Antimatter mish, a crafter (who I should have just combined with the Hami toon but too late now) and an "Invader" toon (though after the V-Day event I have many toons I can use to get Invader but I still go back to this guy every time)

side note: I'll never delete a 50, it costs me nothing for them to sit there and patches happen that can change ones perspective on a toon.

My empath defender was made to do the Cavern of Transcendence trial, like I made her on live, when we all had to count together and click the glowies at the same time, but now everyone is so good at trials and task forces and no clicking at the same time, she didn't need to be made that way.

I have a rad that I park in Skyway for Babbage

I have one very bad at it, fire farmer. Oh so bad, When I invite people to the team, people after a bit tend try to give me influence to make a better build, because they want her/me to be better at it but I'm not 🤷‍♀️  :classic_laugh:  My invul tank is better at it by supporting people that have great builds and know what they're doing, than my farmer. However, I will solo my farmer and do my own thing with it.

I was about to say "no" to this question but then I remembered that I have a stalker that I hardly play any longer that I've kept around for GM hunting during Halloween.  He's seen work for the last 3 Halloweens I think.  I genuinely like doing the work and porting everybody all at once to beat up on a monster, or back to the murder hotel, plus Halloween is my favorite event time in the game, so it's a way to keep at it after I've already taken down a trillion vampires at the hotel.

I like the way he plays, even without the GM hunting I'd keep him, if I ever do go through and clear out the deadwood; I figure I should strip and delete about half my list of 50s that made it all the way but that I had no interest to ever revisit, or (I have more of these) toons that didn't make it to 50 that I still have no interest in touching.  I do hold on to those though, in the wan hope of someday deciding I have a better concept for that power set combo, in which case I've just saved myself some rerolling time.

Tim "Black Scorpion" Sweeney: Matt (Posi) used to say that players would find the shortest path to the rewards even if it was a completely terrible play experience that would push them away from the game...

Yes. A good number of them, and none of them are level 50.

If someone posts a reply quoting me and I don't reply, they may be on ignore.

(It seems I'm involved with so much at this point that I may not be able to easily retrieve access to all the notifications)

Some players know that I have them on ignore and are likely to make posts knowing that is the case.

But the fact that I have them on ignore won't stop some of them from bullying and harassing people, because some of them love to do it. There is a group that have banded together to target forum posters they don't like. They think that this behavior is acceptable.

Ignore (in the forums) and /ignore (in-game) are tools to improve your gaming experience. Don't feel bad about using them.
