New Computer - Any pitfalls to worry about?
Hyperstrike replied to dmiasek's topic in General Discussion
No. That's basically a Windows issue. Does multi-monitor work? Yes-ISH. Are all problems that crop up fixable without third party software? DEFINITELY NOT. There's a difference between "Max" settings and MAX SETTINGS. VERY few things can run CoH at high resolution with things like 16x-32x FSAA turned on. That's just because most cards outside the NVIDIA **90 cards (which are absolute overkill) do not 1have a frame buffer big enough. But, for most things, running at default "Ultra" settings is more than doable. As to laptops, avoid Intel graphics. But I always ALWAYS recommend a dedicated laptop cooler stand. Brand is irrelevant-ish. They'll usually keep your laptop cooler (and quieter) than the on-board fans and heatpipe systems. Avoid "2-in-1" or "foldable" pseudo-tablets. Actually one of the better "bang for the buck" right now is a Dell https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/new-inspiron-16-laptop/spd/inspiron-16-5635-laptop/usichbts5635fyxf 8 core 2.0-4.5Ghz Ryzen 7 16GB RAM 1TB SSD While yes it's integrated (on CPU), it's 8 cores Radeon Graphics. I bought one of these for my brother, and it runs CoH JUST FINE! Basically this thing is essentially "mobile workstation" class. So long as you're not trying to rock 4K with all settings maxed, it's fine. $700 Don't bother looking at the Ryzen 5 version. They auto-downgrade the memory and SSD in the configurator. The price is identical, so just be happy with the extra grunt. If you want to add on mouse, headset, etc, etc, there's only 4 USB slots (3 A-type and 1 C-type). If you're using more, I recommend getting a USB-C to USB-A hub. https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Aluminum-Adapter-MacBook-Chromebook/dp/B07DFYQXY7 For Desktop, here's a newer edition of the 1080p ready system. Now, this is about $200 more than my previous system. For a couple reasons: 1: Larger SSD (2GB) 2: MUCH beefier GPU (RTX 4060 vs RTX 3050) 3: 32GB vs 16GB In short, the system's overkill. If you need to shave the price down, drop back to a 1TB SSD and an RTX 3060. And pare the memory back to 16GB. This should cause the price to drop back into the $800-900 range. One last thing. This time I sourced SPECIFICALLY for New In Stock Shipped from the US (locally sourced) This will likely cause a small rise in the price, but waiting a month or three for a component to arrive SUCKS! Time is money and how much is your personal time worth to you? -

Again, the main problem isn't thermal throttling. The problem is network latency induced by a bad saved state. -

Underpowered GPU: Laptop Internal CPU: Uh. COMPUTER? I don't know of any system out there sporting an "external CPU". Anyhow, it's not really a "power" issue. It looks like it's using Hibernation/Saved State/Fast Reboot. These can introduce problems on laptop systems. If they can get into the BIOS, there SHOULD be a setting for "Fast Reboot" that can be turned off. Not that a proper system reboot on a machine with an SSD should be "slow". Reboots will take longer. But you get a clean system load and hardware test every time. Good catch Flint. This is one of those stupid things I always forget about myself. -

Just gonna say that I disagree with you here. Personal preference is personal preference. Whether the person is IMNSHO'ing over a beer or they've gone to film school and never actually sold anything but has a commensurate large vocabulary to sound important with...

Sorry, but there's no difference between "My buddy says" and "PROFESSIONA:L critic reviews". In all things, it's nothing more than expression of personal preference. And anyone trying to tell me it's different just because someone makes money and another doesn't is rockin' the ganj...

But will the resolution involve WATER and will there be a twist ending?

I don't trust anyone. Even that tubby SOB in the mirror (he freaks me out).

What stops you from simply walking into their midst and dry-ice blasting all their HP off? For reference to the non-sequitur:

PF pretty much nails this point. You get your XP award. You get your Reward Merit award. You get any badges for such defeats. The person who gets the coupe de grace message for actually finishing the GM is utterly meaningless.

Actively pursuing your +End accolades also helps immensely.

This is normally how I have slotted. And YES, it's bang for the buck is maximal. About the only update I would add to this is the Power Transfer Chance for Self Heal.

HELP! New laptop has huge ping when playing

Believe it or not, that actually IS (or could be) problem. 3 feet is way, WAY too close. Does the router work at that distance? Yeah...ish. Does the signal propagate OTIMALLY at that short a distance? No. Optimal spread of the signal is a 360 degree radius at the plane of the antenna. From there, it's optimal dispersion (not the right word, I know, my brain is farting for the proper term at the moment), is in roughly a 100-120 degree arc vertically from the antenna. Sometimes you can adjust the angle the router is mounted at, or you can play with the orientations of the antennas. I don't know EXACTLY how you're set up. But this could be a consideration for you too. For basic web-browsing, it's not a show stopper. For a continuous connection? It could be. -

Also, if you're going to try an USB-to-Ethernet adapter, it's going to eat one of your 4 USB ports. Recommend getting a USB-C-to-Ethernet adapted with additional USB ports. https://www.amazon.com/Ethernet-Adapter-ABLEWE-Aluminum-Chromebook/dp/B07YWTTP9L You're in The Land Of Maple, so use this link: https://www.amazon.ca/Ethernet-Adapter-ABLEWE-Aluminum-Chromebook/dp/B0BGR5JQRQ?th=1 Don't simply "settle" for whatever's sitting on a shelf in your only brick and mortar option. For the Ethernet cable,. I recommend shielded CAT6a. Only get something as long as you absolutely need. Link is to a 5 foot cable with the option to choose longer/shorter.. https://www.amazon.ca/Monoprice-Cat6A-Ethernet-Patch-Cable/dp/B077H5N5L5?th=1 -
Again, the build is not meant as anything other than a very quickly thrown together example. And YES, I missed things. I was simply brute-forcing for Defense and Resist numbers in a time crunch (I was on a short break while at GenCon). * Double Stacked defense (My point exactly) * No Shield Charge (My point exactly). And I agree with your prescriptive fix here. * Regen boost. Build had other priorities. (Defense/Resist) I'm sure with more time I could have hit the same results in another way. * Assault Core. Agreed, it was a mistake brought on by the speed of the build process. Note on the unbalanced Defense. Again simply because the build priorities don't conform to your personal preference does not make these "mistakes" or "wrong". Use of OF is, as mentioned used SOLELY in the service of chasing set bonuses. Though the little bit of KB Resist aside from AD is a nice little insurance policy. Additionally, BA is a fairly one-note set. It makes it extremely difficult to diversify for broader Defense. In the end, the most common forms of damage have excellent protection and while it has DDR, the over-cap Defenses act as a buffer against the fractional Defense Debuff that DOES sneak through. * Passing on Slot 6 for AW in Melt Armor. POINTS TO RESISTANCE NUMBERS I agree. Your build is generally better balanced, and likely way more effective. Then again, you've had a couple of days to dig down and correct/optimize things. I didn't.

This is why I've gone back to flat text exports. I've been unable to get the 3.5 version of Mids exports to work right. So the flat text one gives you the level the slot goes in, the level of the enhancement and the enhancement itself.

Also, check to see if you're running any sort of download/content management software on your machine. 3rd party game accelerators, etc. These things, are almost always universally BAD for normal function. As they screw around with regular network traffic in an attempt to speed up certain types of traffic. -
Ideally you want to bump your Resists and Defense up as much as is reasonably possible. This should leave you with more than enough slots to fill out your attacks. Basic brute-force (Heh heh heh) build.
