  1. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! The comment by coyotedancer is correct, by making content that requires specific ATs, it will prevent players from experiencing that content. I am well aware of the facets of the conversation and the reprecussions of changes made to the core gameplay. As I stated, new content would be awsome! If you think you can do better, then go make some and stop waiting around for other people to produce what you desire. But really, thanks for the afternoon laugh in your attempt to troll me, much love to you, @Shoulung, stay classy!
  2. It's all volunteer. How about you go make the client it would take to change sounds and other client side things on demand? Really, it seems like it's a great idea, I agree, it just takes someone with time and energy to do it...it would even be completely 'server agnostic', useful for all players on all servers. I am trying to find the time myself, but fat chance right now for me, RL is in the way. I would personally prefer the HC and other server teams concentrate on server-side things and get players that want client changes to make them... There is no possible way any server side team will ever make everyone happy, no matter what they do...iMO.
  3. I have always been very sad this did not work out, seems like it would be so cool, think of the possibilities with the new base love as well. Base raiding would be awesome sauce!
  4. You could design groups for the content as a challenge. New content would be very nice - if you like raids and things, why not design some and submit those to the HC team, mock them up in the AE, etc.? While Supes needed help sometimes, we have Incarnate Trials. It's obvious IMO you are really trying to attack the 'gaming integrity' of anyone that does not want to play your way. Don't need a Protestant Work Ethic in my video game I play for entertainment, thanks. If you don't like the fact that people exist that play an MMO who don't really care for group content, oh well, go play one... Pfft. Your 'lowest common demominator' comment shows all anyone needs to see, IMO.
  5. No clue. 🙂 I cannot remember the names of things and people I really need to...names are really hard for me... I remember swearing fealty in the right chain, having a high level dude (the dad of a friend) buff me so I could gear up the uber stuff in his guild chest, then have me kill one thing and we all leveled like 5 times...AC is wild...
  6. "If you don't start nuttin', there won't be nuttin'" ...
  7. I have noticed a drastic difference compared to Live in the number of people that will 'go first'. The groups I recall from Live were full of people fighting to 'go first'. On HC, IME grouping so far, I see very, very few players the seem to want to 'go first'. Could be perception bias, bad memeory, etc., but it really feels to me like there are a lot more "Indie, you go first" players... So, I have found that on groups, I seem to be leading the pack most of the time, even if it's not my intent... I have been joking about tanking with everything - this is why...
  8. IME, much of this comes from MOBAs and other games where you just 'pick a character and play' as well...most modern games that attempt to appeal to a large audience have fewer 'leveling' aspects and are more 'reward' based as a form of progression. Personally, years ago in AC1, one of the people in my cirlce then bought some gold. They then proceeded to buy some uber equipment with that gold. I still feel just a little dirty to this day for even grouping with him after that. However, in the mind of others, this is no different than getting an extra rare collectable card and selling to someone. To some, virtual goods are something they 'earned' through 'work' and in thier minds no one should tell them how they allocate the resources they 'worked' to acquire. Who can really claim to have the 'right' outlook here? Different cultures, different views on each persons time, energy, and resources. This is one of the most fascinating aspects of the gaming world to me. These players broke the rules and got punished and I applaud the HC team for the actions, as RMT can really damage MMOs in the public eye. That does not negate the fact the industry has in fact encouraged players to pay for what they want to use in a game, some from day 1. Lots of outlooks, lots of reasons...
  9. This thread inspired me to level up my Tank some more, I have not rebuilt my Tank from Retail yet. Last night, I jumped on the first team doing content my level I saw in LFT. I said little more than my standard "g'day" to be polite, not a talkitive group, but fun enough. Three MMs and other assorted things. I would go left sometimes and some of the team would go right. When I had aggro locked on the group I was in and would see a health bar dropping, I jumped to the second grounp to get some agro for a while, rinse repeat. I did my 'job', I took damage so others did not have to... The players that liked a tank in front, just automatically followed me, the others continued to do thier thing. No drama, no accusations of anyone doing anything wrong, just moved through the content, even when the party almost wiped and couple of us whittled down a big room until it was safe to rez. I tend to agree that those players who lament the perceived lack of a Tank being needed (or a Healer being needed) are the ones who just don't get fawned over and made the defacto leader because they play a Tank, or are so ingrained in the idea that MMOs must folow the trinity or it's 'wrong'. After Retail, I played Tanks in a number of MMOs...most I hated for a very simple reason...the other players expected the Tank to lead the whole group, all the time, with explicit and complete instructions and scripts that 'everyone knew', for every encounter...ugh, it was horrible...I don't play MMOs to herd people...
  10. I recall people being bent very early in the Retail Live game over discovering that some players could power level using things like the old fire farm. The studio itself built some of the torches and pitchforks. I can reall specific measurement having been thrown around even then on what was 'right and proper' as a time to 50... While I am a realist and I understand some people are just mean, I simply have never understood the mixture of hate and envy it must take to want to force other people one has never seen nor met, into playing a game the same way... I hear people use words like 'earn' and 'work' when this is a video game, not a job. MMOs players do not need to have a Protestant Work Ethic to play a game, IMO. But as others have pointed out as well, these types of players have always been here and they will probably never really go away...sad. My biggest fear about the outcome CoH, TBH, is that whatever entity does end up controlling Lilve servers does not decide to tell the playerbase the 'right way to play'...
  11. And it will never stop, IMO, as some poeple simply prefer that style of play, even when they ruin the game for themsleves. For CoH, plenty of data exists to explain that the meat of the content is based aorund leveling new characters, not endgame raid progression. So IMO, if players just do even a little research... But there will always be people that are firm in the thought that the only way to play is to start at the apex of power, regardless of the game involved, and judge it only by that metric...cannot please some of the people any of the time, IMO...
  12. Not to mention the entire premise behind being told to use the test server is an accusation of 'avoiding content', just another passive-aggresive jibe, IMO, from people that simply prefer to kill pixels in a different way, but think they have to demean the other ways people play... Next we will be told that anyting that allows a level 50 in less that 300 hours of playtime is cheating? Where will this 'play the game this way or you are doing it wrong' end?
  13. That's always IME what happens - add in more challenge, players want more compensation because of it, causing more challenge to be needed and the cycle never ends, all MMOs end up here... Most importantly, IMO, is defining what is challenging...one persons challenge is another persons cake-walk is another persons perfect balance. Adding bigger numbers is not adding challenge, it is just extending the life of the hamster wheel, IMO. Anything with a script adds no challenge beyond a few runs of figuring out the script and then doing the dance steps right over and over, don't stand in the blue death, etc...the only challenge there become player management/leadership, which is simply not why I play games, I get plenty of people drama in RL. So, IMO, just like in every MMO on the planet, once you have 'the build' all you can do is find personal goals, because 15 minutes after anything new hits, the tricked out characters will have beaten it and put up the video on how to do it for everyone else. IMO, CoH challenges are all based around personal investment and responsibility, all of the numbers have already been figured out.... Which why, IMO, CoH is popular with the 'make all the characters' crowd, the replayability, to me, comes from the diversity of characters I can create, not from the numerical/scripted in-game challenges.
  14. I have to get my debt badges somehow! Since the penalty for falling down in this game is virtually non-existant, I have never understood why people have so much angst over it. I laugh at it, I laugh at full team wipes, yet I see others 'lose thier minds' over these things... Eat the purples, jump in the middle, fire off everything you have and hope for the best...is that not how to play now? 🙂
  15. Bingo. Tanks are Melee Range Controllers in CoH IMO. Instead of holds, they have resiliance. IMO, much of the community sees a Melee AT and expects Hulk level damage out of it, without really seeing what the AT is supposed to be doing. On the flip side, if people make super teams, the Tank AT really shines, because all the other participants can eshew thier personal defences more easily, since they are not all being built to solo and just happen to find a team with a Tank. Personally, in all my years of Tanking in CoH with one of my favorite creations, I have never entered a team and gotten anything like 'ugh, a Tank', the opposite usually occurs. The Tank role is always needed, I assume the role on all characters regardless of AT, because IME, most players on most teams are terrified to 'go first'.
  16. Doesn't every MMO forum have a "when will this game shut down?" thread, or 10, with a side of "XYZ will kill the population and get the game shutdown"? I just think this is another indicator that HC has suceeded in lauching an MMO.... 😉
  17. Yeah, I have to agree here @Abraxus, seems like that was a short lived window of inquiry. All these years, all the different games, media, etc., and yet we still have people convinced not playing paid-for-developer-content-stories is somehow lesser and wrong...to the degree these individuals seem to not be content unless they can trell us we are doing it wrong, even with thier passive agressive language. It is funny to me, especially when the story content for most of the game is of medium quality at best, a few gems exist, but it's not like the CoH story lines are anything oscar winning. This entire idea, that by playing CoH in a different way through the AE is 'skipping the game' is about funnist damn thing I have seen around any game. AE is a part of the game. If you are playing in the AE, you by definition, playing the game. It's like trying to say 'anything on the radio' is better that the local band, just because they got on the air... Or like saying that any fiction that has been published by a book company is by definition better than anything self published... Or like having a Fast Pass at an amusement park is 'cheating'... And that, basically, playing a game and having fun is not playing the game... Frikin' hilarious....the very definition of 'get off my lawn' IMO...
  18. I think it's been 1-2 months since I saw the blurb about - I suck at details like that - I did not go out of my way to confirm any of it...
  19. Somehow, the development house behind the game at that time IMO was actually rose-colored-glasses enough to think anyone that uased the AE they built would do so with only the most of Heroic reasons... It became a morals war both in and out of the game that obviously still rages on now...it has been incredible to watch it rage on and on... There are some people that literally think the AE is 'cheating'...in a power-fantasy MMO with little to no PvP most of them would never touch anyway... I totally agree that in game here on HC, I have seen no hate for AE/Power Leveling/Farming, only (a few) posters here on the forums. I do wish the moral war would come to a conclusion though....a man can dream...
  20. 5. Players that just like to fool around when they have the time who have been one or more of the above at some point over the years. The player quilt, especially for this game, is seemingly endless from my PoV. In the current state, expecially by using the AE if that is your thing, there are not many comic-based stories one cannot create/play/enjoy, IMO. I have/have had friends that played CoH: . just for the Market - still had multiple tricked out 50s . just to hang out and talk on VoIP - had multiple 50s, no idea how to really play any of them . just to try and one-up and control everyone else - tried to tell us all to wait for Aim and BU before opening combat with every single spawn, issue 1. . just because it was about comics . just becuase it was about supers I love this game and IMO, the AE concpet of player-created content that those players and other can enjoy is friggin' awesome. I could not care less if it's a fast way to get 50s, just like the Demons Farms of old (still use I hear). The point of the game is to have fun and gain joy from playing, IMO, the AE adds joy.
  21. Loud in AP Global/LFT Chat, for AE Farms or DFB, has always been the thing attacked. In some peoples eyes, the very nature of the game is based uopn the most 'global' chatroom. *shrug* The first thing I do in all MMOs is shutdown most all chat channels. I stay out of AP as a soon as I can. The moment the DFB became less popular in LFT on HC from my PoV, all calls for nerfing/removing/changing it ceased... For years, whatever chat that is seen as 'spamming' the 'global channels' got attacked - "if those kids over there are having more fun than me, it must be wrong!" When I saw it happen on HC I laughed and laughed, so predictable is this MMO player group. The AE is now a unicorn as well...STO and Neverwinter lost thiers...
  22. On my work team, we build software integrations, when we hear the old "why can't they just" we know we are simply dealing with people that are uninformed/inexperienced. The simple fact is that not everyones brain chemistry is such that what seems easy to one person is as easy to another. In my work world, it means that these folks do not understand the technology. In the real world, IME, it means that people typically have a really hard time understanding that other peoples brains "can't just" do this or that. My favorite easy example is being on time. Both my wife and I were wait staff. For that job, on-time is late. We worked with a person for like 15 years in an office who could never be on time. An otherwise incredible employee, ran HR even, but could not be on time, always late. My wife could never get over her attitude of "she could just"... Some people have allowed this game to become an emotional pillar in thier realities and thoughts of losing it terrify them. They cannot "just" not think about it ... In some case here as well, I think people are just looking for words from thier fellows of comfort and solice, because this game is such a large part of thier emotional fabric. IMO, with our Internet connect world, if some people don't get a message about something every few minutes/hours then they immediately think the worst as well and panic. When there is no news, poeple will start making stuff up, even when no news is good news... Fun Times.
  23. AKA, Positron, one of the main developers of the game for a while, unless I mixed up a name. I recall enjoying the hell out of the missions I played in AE on Live, some were head and shoulders quality wise above anything in the game at that time. Better writing, better stories, all of it. I also love horde killin' games, so fighting waves of enemeies I find very fun, used to try and solo all kinds of hordes. Personally, I like variety, so I just solo the mission I do get at -1 or 0 x4-8, and occasionally reset them if I have fun arresting that particular group. IMO, that is no different from the AE. People were farming content and PLing long before the AE hit and those poeple just moved to that, IME. Your words, IMO, suggest you dislike the AE for more reasons than just, 'not finding enough teammates', but because it makes things easy and I guess therefore 'bad'.
  24. CoH is very welcoming....right up until you mention the AE, PvP, Farming for loot, power-leveling, and/or not being creative enough, then the 'community' shows up to tell people they are doing it wrong. Using the same community, I have never had any issue finding teams when I want them, before and during the AE addition. Only the followers of Matt Miller who wanted to villify the AE because it used more resources than anticipated, IME, were the issue. Now, the resource issue is mostly solved, yet we still have traditionalists... IME, the community around the AE encapusaltes the very best of CoH and those that attack it do not. AE farmers help farmers, they PL just about anyone that wants it, show other players how to do it and IME, don't tell those that enjoy content outside the AE they are 'doing it wrong'....IME it's the ones that hate on the AE that are a community problem, IME, not the AE. My memory of Retail Live and experiences in HC Live have shown me that negative voices come from people that think everyone 'should' level up through 'traditional' means and are mad because other players choose a different path...these players think the game itself should change, so they have players forced to play with them in traditional content... Disliking to use a tool and villianizing it as the reason for a lack of the kind of players you like are two different things, IMO. Full DIsclosure - never really PLed in the AE on Live, not even run a single AE mission on HC...
  25. The game is about arresting bad guys in a comic book setting. The X-Men had the danger room decades ago, for 'power leveling' so they could be ready to fight. The community you speak of consists of both those that use and do not use the AE. The same community you speak of is, from my PoV, one of the cattiest, close-minded, arrogant, and down right 'mean' MMO communities in which I have participated. Is it not enough that the busy bodies and hall monitors have to rag on the player base already constantly in telling the rest of us the 'right' way to have fun? You still feel the need to come in here and piss all over the part of your precious community that enjoys something you might not like? Sheesh.
