build help Proposed Fire/Psi/Fire Dominator build. Thoughts?

Thanks. Just out of curiosity, what does your max build look like (without changing any sets)? OOF that Dominator set is expensive. 12 million each. Yikes. -

Really? No comments from anyone? -
Sorry about necroing this thread, but it deserves more attention. I play on an ultrawide and the letterboxing makes most cutscenes unwatchable, with the tops and bottoms cut off. Can't see the text or most of what's going on. Any chance this can be addressed? I like Luminara's idea of putting in an option to disable them altogether.

Yes, but trademark encompasses the name, logo, and market. So it was music company Apple Corps with an apple logo going after computer company Apple Computer with an apple logo, with the settlement agreeing that neither company would dip into each others' markets. And that's the thing with trademarks, you gotta enforce them or lose them.
-
It is indeed a fascinating look into how trademarks are handled, and how the winner tends to be the bigger company (at first Apple Records, and then later Apple Computers). The whole sordid affair is well documented here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Corps_v_Apple_Computer

Yeah, I remember this whole debacle. Just goes to show that copyright can be a total sh*tshow. They touched on it in the video, that DC sued Fawcett in the early 40s claiming that Captain Marvel was an infringement of Superman solely due to having similar powers and despite having a completely different name, look, and backstory. And that was a case that dragged on for over a decade until Fawcett just gave up due to superhero comics no longer being profitable at that point and agreeing to never publish Captain Marvel in comics again. But they kept the rights to all the Marvel family characters, which they licensed to DC in 1973 and later sold outright to them a few years later.
-
This is not quite accurate. Uncommon names can be trademarked, but only for certain things, like merchandise and movie or publishing titles. Characters can fall under copyright, but that takes the name, look, and details of the character into consideration. Direct copying of stories and art is also definitely copyright infringement. Trademarks can last forever as long as they are used, renewed, and enforced. Copyrights expire...eventually. A perfect example of this is Captain Marvel. Marvel Comics has the trademark on the name which allows them to publish a comic and release a movie with that name in the title (comic and movie titles are separate trademarks, btw). Both Marvel and DC can have characters named Captain Marvel, and each holds a copyright based upon both the name and the graphical representation of the character. As long as each character is substantially different from the other the use of the name itself is not enough for a copyright violation. But under no circumstances can DC publish a comic with "Captain Marvel" in the title, as that would be a trademark violation. Which is why when DC brought him back in 1973 the comics were titled "SHAZAM!" (or some derivative thereof, e.g. "The Power of SHAZAM!"). DC didn't have to change the character's name from Captain Marvel to Shazam, that's something they chose to do for the New 52 reboot. Names of well-known characters such as Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, etc. get an extra layer of copyright protection due to their notoriety. While technically Marvel could create a character named Superman (as long as he was substantially different in both appearance and function), DC would argue (and win) that because the name Superman is so well-known and recognizable that it would cause significant confusion simply due to the name. Another good example is Mickey Mouse himself. At the end of this year the copyright on Steamboat Willie expires. This means Mickey Mouse will finally enter the public domain and will be free for anyone to use in whatever way they please (Disney says they have no plans to fight for another extension, but we shall see). But there's a catch: only the visual representation of Mickey Mouse as he appears in Steamboat Willie will be in the public domain, and that version of Mickey is VERY different than what he looks like today. And you still won't be able to use the name "Mickey Mouse" in a title or on merchandise because that's trademarked. And yet another wrinkle in copyright is homage, fair use, and parody, which can further blur the lines in a copyright battle, and often comes down to a judge or jury to decide if a copyright has been violated. Hope this clears things up a bit.

Getting a good chuckle out of most of this thread. Only have one thing to add: Dominators aren't Controllers and shouldn't be played like one. If you're playing your Dom like a Troller you're doing it wrong.

build help Proposed Fire/Psi/Fire Dominator build. Thoughts?
Captain Fabulous posted a topic in Dominator
Wanting to do this fairly on the cheap, so super expensive IO sets are not an option. Primary goal is to get Permadom, and with 80% global recharge + Hasten I should be OK. Secondary goal was to stuff in as much defense as possible (ranges from 19.4-35% based on damage/positonal type). Open to any reasonably-priced suggestions to make this any better if possible. First time user, also having this problem. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I've deleted and recreated the character in the Badger list, I've deleted the chatlog file, run settitle multiple times, but it's just not going thru for me, and I don't know why. -
issue 27 Focused Feedback: Sonic Assault
Captain Fabulous replied to The Curator's topic in [Open Beta] Focused Feedback
I feel like there should be a disorient in here someplace. -
I'm not quite sure you could do the reverse. Warshades are basically dark powers, and I don't think any of them have a Bright option. Not that I'm against customization. It's just that it's something that would have to be created from scratch.
-
I know that electricity powers are different. Villain default is red while hero is bluish/purple. Other than that and Invulnerability, which other sets are colored differently?
-
Turns out that's really close to what I did. Temp Invulnerability looks best with white/white. Dull Pain I used 2 greens that I think comes really close to the original. Unyielding has a bit of a pinkish/purple color to it, so I used one of the palest purple colors as the primary and white as the secondary. Invincibility is an odd one. If you go with Bright the effect never fades no matter which colors you choose. In the tailor preview if you use original the first bit looks like the Tank version, and the second part has the dark theme. But if you actually leave it on original it looks just like the Tank version during actual gameplay. The dark blobs you see in the tailor preview aren't there at all. I don't use Unstoppable (can we please get rid of penalties on powers -- it's sooooo 2004!) so I didn't even bother to try and match it. So yeah, turns out it was a lot easier to get it to match than I expected.
-
I think I've gotten pretty close, but after a few minutes of going back and forth I get a bit bleary-eyed. I'd be happy to share what I came up with. I was just wondering if anyone else did a better job than I did.
-
Sooo... When making a Brute the original Invulnerability colors are dark, a hold-over from when Brutes were villain-only. I get it. And because the game doesn't know you're going to be a hero or villain until after you create your character it doesn't know you'd rather have the default hero colors for Invulnerability. Got that too. Short of the devs adding the option to use the default hero colors in the drop down box (unsure if even possible), the only option is custom colors. Which, while a nice option, can be very difficult to fully replicate the original colors. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a resource that has figured out which colors to use in order to replicate the Invul powers closest to original. Thanks.

I'm baaaaack! Really enjoying this character, but lamenting the squishiness. I'm trying to build in as much defense as possible without losing PermaDom but it's proving to be challenging. Right now I'm at ~28% melee/ranged and 26% AoE defense and capped S/L resists. Good, but not great. Any advice is appreciated. A couple of things: This character is very thematic, so */*/Fire is essential I won't drop Rise of the Phoenix or Afterburner so please don't suggest it Not willing or able to spend huge $$$ on this, needs to be kept under ~100 million unless someone wants to be my sugar daddy, so this rules out purples, ATOs, and other ridiculously overpriced IOs Gotta have PermaDom. Playstyle for a Dom, and their limitations
Captain Fabulous replied to Captain Fabulous's topic in Dominator
I went with the Preemptive Optimization set for the 3.75% global recharge bonus. I really only need to hit 1 critter to have more than enough recovery. The problem with DP is the range is a lot smaller than it appears, 10 ft. I've found that trying to get more than 2-3 winds up with me getting maybe 1, sometimes none, simply because they're not close enough together. -

Captain Fabulous replied to Captain Fabulous's topic in Dominator
A couple things: power order is a bit wonky in Mids, but everything is there. My initial goal was to get permadom without spending a fortune, and this cost me under 50 million. I have no desire to spend 500+ million on this build, so please don't suggest I pick up 25+ purple set IOs that are $20 million each. It ain't gonna happen unless I find myself a sugar daddy. But I'm also aware that this means this build might be as good as it gets. I honestly don't see how I would get the Fighting pool in there. I'd have to give up Afterburner, Rise of the Phoenix, and maybe Fire Cages? Reallocate slots from Health and Stamina. Hm, maybe. It would suck losing those powers tho. I do like building to a theme and Afterburner and RotP fit very nicely. -

Fix for cutscenes on ultrawide monitors?
Captain Fabulous replied to Captain Fabulous's topic in Bug Reports
Yeah, I can't say why it was done that way, probably because it was quick and easy, but the black bars are added to cutscenes to give them a cinematic look. Also gotta remember that from 2004-2011 1080p was the super high-end, with most people still using 4:3 monitors. -

Captain Fabulous replied to Captain Fabulous's topic in Bug Reports
Yeah, for you the bars need to be extended. But for me the bars need to be removed, because all I get is a very narrow viewport since my screen is already ultrawide.
